Brad Wing concerns me with his Jekyll and Hyde ways. Too inconsistent for my liking. Seems like he's got the hang time, but on his best punts, they're mediocre, and his worst are just plain awful. He does have a few hidden 52, 48, and so on punts in there. But if we are gonna have to punt a lot this season... I for sure would want someone with a little more consistency back there. Just figured I'd bring it up with the 1st wave of cuts coming up. Anyone out there worth picking up who could possibly be cut?

I don't think hell get cut just yet. We still have Podlesh? I think? But he's been out with a family emergency.

Or we could always try to lure Kluwe away from retirement?

Podlesh was put on the did not report list or something for camp. Wasn't sure if that means his roster spot is still there or if he's a FA. But I'm not saying they're gonna cut Wing this week, just wondering if there's any one else out there better who might be losing their job to an already established punter with another team.

I imagine Wing will make it through both rounds of roster cuts, but won't be the punter week 1. Podlesh is an unknown, but the Steelers would have just released him if they didn't hope or intend for him to return to active duty. Otherwise, someone more reliable will likely be on the market before the season starts. I can't give a specific name.

At this point Podlesh hasn't put any work in and due to his unfortunate situation with his wife may be a head case. Hope for the best, but Wing as you said is too Jekyll and Hyde for my liking

We'll be signing a punter off the waiver wire at least twice this year. I wonder why we can't get this position correct.

Why didn't we bring in another punter during training camp with Podlesh out?

We had plenty of slots. We cut a running back and bring another in when we only had one punter. We should have at least 3 or 4 in camp..

Where is Sepulveda ... and can he make it to camp without blowing out his knee?

At this point, I'd take him over Wing in a heartbeat.

This team isn't interested in that type of controversy.

SteelersDepot has an article today about Colton Schmidt of the 49'ers probably becoming available. I guess he has punted quite well in the pre-season but Andy Lee is a strong incumbent there. I guess he can kickoff through the end zone which would be a major upgrade over Swishy. And he can also kick extra points and FG in a pinch as well - which may be a benefit considering how Swishy has been kicking since getting the contract.

Agreed. I know a punter seems unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but the field position we are giving the other team is KILLING us. What was wrong with Butler?? I don't get why we cut him.

Well they can get Butler if they want him, he was waived today by the Lions.

Apparently we aren't the only team that doesn't see Drew's potential, cut by Pitt, Chi & Det since 2012. Maybe the kid just doesn't have "it"

I saw the NFL.COM article about him today. One thing about Suisham though is something that Charlie Batch mentioned on Cooler Talk the other night. He said that since Greg Warren is hurt it is probably having a pretty serious effect on Suisham because they had established a good rhythm with one another and it's not as easy as people think for another guy to just step right in there and snap for a kicker. I basically took it that he was blaming the longsnapper more than Suisham I guess. I still just wish Sepulveda could have stayed healthy. I was actually a fan of his.

What controversy? Supporting gay rights or Guy rights?

They seem interested in punchy druggies like Blount. If we prefer DUI to civil rights, we've got as many issues as Blount.

He'd kick Wing's ass in an open competition. But this 49er guy could be great. You could be the 2nd best punter in the league and still lose out to Andy Lee. We'd be nuts not to bring him in immediately.

    Lions cut Drew Butler.
Is our punting situation bad enough right now to bring him back?
I believe it is. Haven't seen enough from Wing and Podlesh is still awol and/or dealing with family issues.

He hasn't been able to crack a roster since the team waived him. Statistically, he's performed worse than Brad Wing this preseason.

Why don't I remember that? The year Butler was our punter, I thought he did a serviceable job - better than the other clowns we continue to bring in. I have no idea why the man cant make an NFL roster.

He was serviceable IMO, though, IIRC he had an issue with shanking punts out of bounds.

That's one of them. He's extremely noisy about non-football matters. He's also already sued one former employer, which doesn't help either.

Okay went out to SteelersDepot and they have a new article that Tomlin like Wing and has no plans to bring in another punter. Said he likes how he has handled different situations.

Really? Once again - this is where I question Tomlin - being too much of a good guy instead of being a pragmatic strategist. The point is to make the team better. How about bringing in Schmidt who was released by the 49ers? What can it hurt? Put him out there on Thursday and really see how they both do with the pressure on. I am sure Bellichek wouldn't have a problem giving Wing some competition.
