??? two years of contract left. 2014 and 2015. two years they could franchise him. 2016 and 2017. that's 4 more years if they do nothing. I know it won't come to that but that is what would most likely be worst case scenario if they can't come to an agreement.

Lets just say for argument sake that the Steelers would do business that way and not work out a contract. Do you think they'd risk losing him for nothing after the 2017 season?

sure just like san fran losing joe Montana. there is more of a chance at that age that ben will want to stay put.

as I said , he may be offered a two year deal at that point. at that stage he would be 37 going into 2018. sure there may be some takers but I doubt anything over two years. most teams won't want a 37-38 year old qb, to have to insert and build a team off of, so the ball would most likely swing back to favor the steelers at that point and ben would have made a lot of money. at that point ben would be mentoring his replacement.

This actually gets my vote. By 2018, I have my doubts as to his value. By 2018 we should have a replacement in position.

He's 32 now, he'd be 35 going into the 2017 season, I'd have to think he'd fetch a 2nd and 3rd rounder, at the very least a 2nd rd pick. I don't see any chance that they'd pass up getting something for him just to watch him walk away at the end of 2017.

None of this matters, he'll have a deal in place before the 2015 season starts.
