Interesting in a recent interview Ben menitioned the deal Cutch, Sid, and Geno gave tgeir respective teams. He also mentioned the players the Broncos brought in due to Mannings deal. Not saying he will give them a hometown discount but he sure is talking like it.

Part of the big deal was the need to extend Troy and Heath to avoid extending Ben this offseason. It makes no logical sense. But it's what we did.

Doesn't even need to give them a home town discount but realize what it is they are trying to accomplish and work a deal that gives them flexibility to put guys around him while paying him in line with what he is worth. If he is smart and I think he is, then he realizes the other money opportunities that come with success beyond just what the Steelers will pay him.

Peyton's deal? Peyton is one of the highest paid QBs in the NFL ... and he's 38 years old.

The man is one of the highest paid human beings on this planet and he plays a game for a living. "If that's stupid, sign me up."

We'll sign him, it will be next year, and it will be franchise QB money. 1, 2, 3.
Just as they said and in a rare show of respect, in advance. That's it(.)

I say a five year extension, worth 90 million, with 25 million guaranteed.

Ben told the media he feels like he's playing on a hometown discount this season because he's making 12 million. Oh well go out and play the team will take care of him after the season, it's not like he can't live on that salary.

Sounds like it's not an issue at all. Sounds like all that "respect" Rooney heaped on him did the job.

Stephen A Smith just said Ben said he will either get a new deal with the Steelers or retire since he doesn't want to play anywhere else. Anyome else hear this?

It was a good piece, Ben will get paid, probably not the highest paid but will definitely be in the ball park.

And that right there is part of the reason he gets chumped by the Steelers. Never ever tell your boss that you can't imagine working anywhere else.

I dont think so because he does have the option to retire. He has made plenty of money. If he retired the Steelers would be screwed. So he still has leverage here.

I don't believe that's accurate. He said last year that he would rather retire than ask for a trade, but the other day I'd swear I read that he said that he wanted to raise his family in Pittsburgh, but will have to do what's best for his family. Don't quote me on that. I'd have to dig around to find that quote.

Bens in the drivers seat, he can say all the rah rah stuff he wants but he doesn't negotiate his contract, his agent does and he'll be sure to remind them that all they have behind Ben is Grad and Jones *shudder*.

A loaded gun is pretty useless if you're not prepared to pull the trigger ... unless the person you point it at has reason to believe that you will. I don't think anyone believes that he's prepared to retire at 32 or 33.

Here is a link to the article by the Trib's Alan Robinson, I think it is the one that is generating a lot of the buzz. In my opinion it is just the type of article meant to stir up controversy.

Edit: coincidentally there is story on there too about how the Steelers are now behind the Pirates for holding the attention of the city and it isn't Sid the kid, Geno or Big Ben but McCutchen who is the big star in Pittsburgh now. Now sure if I agree with that but nice to see someone thinks the Bucs are becoming more relevant.

The younger people are absolutely enamored with Cutch. If he keeps this up he could come close to Clemente when it comes to love from the city. I would say.he is probably the biggest star in Pittsburgh right now. He is the total package. A great ball player who helped turn the pirates around and is a great person iff the field.

I don't buy it personally. Maybe someone has the facts and can correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the Steelers get higher ratings when they're "bad" than the Pirates in the playoffs?

I want all 3 to win a championship in the same year so I can get a shirt that says, We'll kick your ass on ice, grass and in the base paths. Go Steelers, bucco's and pens.

I doubt the Steelers would do that, theyd be hefty price tags and it's not there MO. If negotiations got that ugly and Ben demanded a trade, I think they'd look to move him. They could probably fetch a 1st rounder in 2 years still and if not a first, a nice assortment of other picks Im sure.

Don't expect that to happen though, I think it will be a fairly easy contract to work out.
