Problem is, there's so many competing for a spot this year that he may not make the cut. Butlers comment, that "he will be a starter someday in this league" tells me he has a future but it may not be with the Steelers. They like him obviously, but he may lose out to better talent.

I honestly think he makes the team. He is going to do just wuat he did last year and make him self uncuttable due to his special teams play. I think the last spot is really between Zumwalt and Spence. I think Garvin has too many snap to be PS eligible for the Steelers but not the other two. People are really building themselves up for a let down with Spence. Great story and all but there's no way he ia playing with the same speed he once was meaning he is going to have to change tye way he plays the game. Garvin is the prototypical LBer for this defense now. He's fast and good in coverage. I actually had him penciled in as my starter before Shazier was drafted.

I have him nabbing the last LB spot, with Zumwalt on the PS. I think his reps on defense drop to practically zero this year (with Shazier, Williams, and even Spence in the mix), but he'll be here for ST.

I'm not sure that he makes the team..

If Spence performs equally on ST's, Garvin could get his walking papers IMO.

Spence is that wildcard right now. Can he make it? Not sure, but I hope so.

Yeah, it's impossible to predict. It's going to sting if he gets cut, but it's a strong possibility.

Might sound boneheaded, but I wouldn't mind seeing him at the safety position. I think that's been kicked around before, but I bet he could handle it as that is where I believe he spent his college days.

I read he had a very strong showing in OTA's. Baring an injury, I don't see how he doesn't make the team, they didn't keep him around all this time just to cut him. His play would have to be really awful and I don't think it will be the case, as evident by his early showing in OTA's. My only question with him is if his knee holds up.

spence has an uphill climb I think. there is just too much competition at that spot. ST's is one thing, but on gameday he has to be one of the top 47 and able to play if needed as an ILB. that will be a tough order for him.

Williams too will have all the competition he can handle. if they were sold on him as a definite I don't think we would have drafted two more ILB's, and added 2 free agents. I think we could see some suprises out of this group that may not be popular. molls and garvin could still have some say so in this as well as kion Wilson and moats. who can do more, may be the guy.

I think Williams is a shoo-in, he's got NFL experience under his belt and did a fairly nice job for being thrown into the fire his first season, he'll only be better in year two. I don't think Kion has a chance in hell. I'l be shocked if Spence doesn't make the 53.

it just depends on how many they keep. they are looking for speed and guys that can do a lot of things. garvin started too and has experience. so does Wilson. ST's and versatility will win the spots. who has improved more will be the question.

I disagree on Williams. I think he's the odd man out if Spence and Garvin do well in camp and preseason. Williams is a nice 2 down thumper, but that's not the type of ILB that fits best in today's NFL where 11 personnel (3 WR, 1 RB, 1 TE) is the most common offensive formation. Ten years ago, he would have been a lock. Now, I think he has a fight on his hands just to claim a roster spot.

Still have to stop the run, If there is an odd man out, I think it's Garvin. Williams I think had an easier time transitioning in his first year then our #1 draft pick. He's better then he gets credit for and like all players who have invested time in this defense, I believe he will be even better in year two. Don't see any way he doesn't make the team.

But Garvin progressed more during the year and started against Green Bay and probably would have started against the Bengals had he not gotten injured. If Garvin bulled up over the off season he will do just fine against the run. We are talking about a kid that was a camp invite not even an udfa at first and he worked his way up to starting. I think with a full season at LBer and a full off season at it he is going to blow people away this year.

I'm hoping he makes it but if I had to choose between the 2, I think Williams is better. But whos to say it will come down to those 2, Zumwalt is a prime candidate for the PS.

I don't want to say anyone's a shoo-in, but I can't see Vince Williams getting cut. I know he's not a coverage guy, and I know the league is trending that way. I know he didn't blow anyone away last year.

But as a 6th round rookie he started half the season at ILB for us, and called the defense for at least part of it. By all accounts he's a smart, hardworking player. He figures to be a strong run stuffer. He will throw his body around. He can probably play decent special teams. He was solid depth as a rookie, and he's likely to get much better. There is absolutely a place for a guy like that in the league and on this team.

Do I want him starting? No. I didn't want Larry Foote starting either (ever, even in his prime), but it doesn't mean I wanted him off the team. But even if Williams is not an ideal starter, we would be a weaker team for having lost a player with his skill set and intangibles.
