It's the veteran minimum salary benefit. The Steelers are one of the best at saving cap space by using it, and sure, it's an obvious possibility. If you believe the talk from his agent in the past though...it's not gonna happen. He has to play for vet minimum, and that supposedly isn't going to happen according to his agent.

He really doesn't need an agent to play for the minimum. He should be able to negotiate that himself.

At the risk of repeating myself, yet again... ;)...
I don`t see the downside. For us, at least.
If he truly isn`t willing to take vet minimum, I don`t blame him.
If another team pays him a bit more, they will most likely get a bargain.
The injuries at his age/position, are definiteley a gamble, and him learning a new defense, MIGHT give pause,
    But,
If I was in charge of another team, that could use a solid, productive DE, and could out bid the Steelers by 200,000 or so...
    I would pull the trigger.
I don`t wanna see him go, but I feel he has a couple years left. I`d love it to be with us.
If he gets a chance to start elsewhere, no hate on him for taking it. He deserves it.
Hope the MSB, keeps him here, but I ain`t counting on it.
    GO STEELERS!:beard:

I have always really liked Kiesel, and I'd love to see him retire as a Steeler, but from everything I've heard and read, I'm not holding my breath just yet.

First, I love Keisel. Great player. Did everything ever asked of him here. A team first guy and very good at what he does.

Second, it is my understanding that his locker still has all of his stuff in it....hmmm.

Third, I think his return comes down to the play of Thomas, Tuitt, Arnfelt, and N. Williams. If those guys show they can handle the job....he won't be back, but if they struggle in camp, then I think there is a chance he comes back.

Fourth, personally, as much as I like the guy, I think it is time to move on. It is time to take the lump of getting younger.

Lastly, I don't see what his role is on the team or how he comes back for the money. We won't pay him over minimum IMO. If he wants to play for that there is a shot he is back. His role would be a backup. They have already moved Heyward over to his starting position and I doubt they move him back, that is now his.

Another team isn't going to pay Kiesel more than the veterans minimum not at his age. If I'm the Steelers I wouldn't go much past the veterans minimum to get him to sign.

Agree with pretty much everything. Heyward is our RDE, and Keisel has never played on the left side (maybe some before he became a starter in '06 - don't feel like looking that up). If signed, Keisel would be there to back him up and rotate in sometimes. The only way Keisel gets his spot back and Heyward goes to the left is if both Cam Thomas and Stephon Tuitt fall flat on their faces. And I gotta think at least one of them will pan out this year.

I wanted Keisel back, but now I don't see him coming back unless there is an injury.

where do you draw the line? ben has had more injuries than keisel and so has troy and pouncey and casey, yet they get more than minimum wage. why not keisel? ike and Harrison were not offered minimum. if your keisel you have to wonder why me. or ike, why me? they are expecting him to still start, yet took 4 mil.+. even foote got more than minimum. casey's play fell off and he didn't have to play for vet minimum.

it's a hard formula to digest I'd think if you were a player. should they go to a system that says when you turn 30 you have to take a cut in pay because you won't play as well or your body won't handle it? it's a tough scenario to figure.

Drawing the line where their contract expires and you have their replacements lined up (Keisel's situation) seems natural to me. Plus, this is a guy who might be good enough for one more year. Troy and Ben have more quality to offer and more time to offer, and Ike and Harrison still had a contract and were being asked to take a pay cut. You could throw Keisel into the exact same pile as you did Casey and Foote, if you're talking about last year.

that's all more of a hypothetical. I don't think keisel comes back and I don't think he should be offered vet min. if he does. he may have more than a year left too, we just don't know. he was still playing at a high rate last year. he's still got some game left. I can see how keisel wouldn't want to play for minimum.

troy we don't know about and he's had some drop off in his game as well. he doesn't make too many full seasons either and that was a for instance of anyone saying keisel gets hurt alot. that's why he's included as the answer to wardis questions about will his body hold up and why he's offered more than vet min. we have safety replacements in place too and corners.

is arnfelt,Thomas and tuitt better than keisel at this stage? that's the question. as I said it's a tough call and it seems like they are going to go with youth at many spots. I hate this for keisel, but father time creeps up. where to best spend the money comes into play. if keisel is brought back, I'd hope he gets at least the kind of offer foote got. about 1.5 mil. a year I believe. I think he's at least worth that.

I'm not one that equates money to respect. In this situation, offering him a job at all is respect. If we're talking about a guy who, as you just said, might be as good as Brian Arnfelt, we don't need to be throwing him an extra half million dollars for old time's sake. He's got tons of money. He's good on money. If he feels disrespected with a million dollars (which has to be more than Arnfelt and Tuitt make), then that's his call.

I also think that, unlike James Harrison's situation, bringing Keisel in could slow down the development of our younger guys. In Harrison's situation, it's kinda like, "What younger guys?" because the prospects look weak and Harrison would be a solid upgrade for a season. With Keisel, he might be an upgrade to guys like Tuitt and Thomas. Or not. But if it's too close to call, I'd rather Tuitt got the reps under his belt.

I say wait until after the 2nd preseason game to decide. That will have been enough time to evaluate the young guys, and if you're not sure about them, give Brett a call. Like Harrison, he doesn't need camp. Skipping it might actually do his body some good.

I agree about holding off on keisel and like I said in the Harrison thread, I'd wait and see. if we need them in an emergency situation then that's different. we are not just building for this year. a lot of the reason I went with 7 wr's making the team in the other thread. losing some good players for the future, to keep a couple short term or possibly short term. DHB and moore come to mind. 1 year and 2 years. moores age will come into play also in the next year or two. depends how we use him. I'd just hate to lose good prospects for the future. guys that are now familier with this offense.

Kiesel said he will not play for vet minimum, i'll take him at his word, so if thats all he is going to get offered then he wont be playing for the steelers, end of speculation...

People say stuff they don't mean all the time, especially about contract stuff, it's just posturing. Did he even say that or did his agent say that?

I thought it was his agent. And he never said he wouldn't play for the vet minimum; he said his client wouldn't play for minimum wage. A million dollars is quite a bit more than minimum wage.

from what I know he has no intention of playing elsewhere this year. I guess that means he knows something the rest of us don't. he thinks he will be back
