I was kinda suprised as well on this acquisition. I would say perhaps Carnell has gotten in the ear about him. He has a huge ego from what I have read and perhaps this has caused friction on other teams. Maybe Carnell has seen something in him that is coachable.

It would appear they went after him because he was cheap and they like his body of work thus far. Dunno

Because of the way he hits Oakland was determined to make him a SS. His final year there he moved to free and played well enough to get a prove it deal from the Panthers. He was also really young and raw when Oakland took him.

Who cares? He's a Steeler now, and he had a good season in 2013 with the Panthers hopefully he can make the same big plays with the Steelers.

Personally I think this is a legitimate question. HinesWardHOF simply asked a question. Unfortunately I do not have the answer but I am sure someone with more knowledge would be able to answer.

Idk why Oakland let him go, but I'm sure he was glad to get out. I can't guess to the exact reason why Carolina didn't resign him, but Mitchell wasn't the only good football player that they let walk this offseason. They let two OLinemen retire without trying to persuade them, let LaFell walk, Mitchell, and even Steve Smith...

I ran into a few Panthers fans this past week though, and they were really upset to see him go. They seemed to think we were getting a good player. Anyways, idk how much that helps ya Hines.

I think it is different depending upon which team you are talking about.

First, when it comes to Oakland. They are a messed up organization. They really didn't give him much of a chance to succeed. They saw his hitting ability and tried to make a him a SS. It didn't work, not at all. They had a different coach every year and it just didn't work.

Second, when it come to Carolina. He wasn't supposed to be anything more than depth with them last year. Their starter got hurt and he stepped in and played great. They wanted to resign him, but we got to him first.

Lastly, he is exactly the TYPE of player we want. He could be a bust or he could have a huge impact. I watched him a ton being that I live in Charlotte, and if he plays like he did last year.....he will be a stud.

With the Panthers, it was cap management as far as I'm aware. Several teams were interested in Mitchell, and I was surprised he landed here. With the Raiders...who the hell knows. Asking why someone was signed by, or wasn't signed by the Raiders is harder to answer than Einstein's Riddle. It's not like he was there for one year, though. He finished his 4 year rookie deal and they let him walk. The Panthers signed him to 1 year "prove it" deal, and it worked out well for him.

For the Oakland years, Mitchell has said that he got an injury early, and then was not given much of a chance behind a reliable veteran. (Which has happened to a fair number of Steelers rookies in the past.)

He was given a 1 year/1 million contract with Carolina. After the starter ahead of him got injured, Mitchell started 13 games and showed he could make big plays (interceptions and sacks).

I don't know if this was the general consensus, but at least one Carolina sports writer stated this after he joined the Steelers: "He was considered a priority (to re-sign) for the Panthers this offseason. Mitchell, who played strong safety before flipping to free last year, had many suitors in free agency, and he had drawn interest from the likes of the Redskins and Eagles."

So I don't think 3 teams in 3 years is problem.
Besides, the contract is very team friendly, not a lot of guaranteed money.

I'll wait and see how this season plays out. Carolina's front 7 will make any secondary look good.

My point is there's a lot of players who were good but didn't get re-signed by their teams, most of them were probably because of money. Blount had a good year with the Patriots last season they didn't seem to try hard to re-sign him I'm glad he's a Steeler now.

But as you say " probably" is the reason why the question is legitimate. Lots of questions with the Steelers interest in FA this year.. For the first time since I have been a fan they are acting uncharacteristically .. It's good mind you at least IMHO, but it is however questionable.

I liked this p/u and just about everything they did this off season. This was the best off season ever for me so Not only am I drinking the kool-aid I seem to think I know just what's in there. Not good, I know.

Mitchell was a stud last year, has good speed and covers well. Will it work out here? Time will tell but I think they paid for the right help in the right spot here.

    IMHO (In my homer opinion)
