Good article by Peter King. Mike Wallace will be a great receiver (write it down as a famous Steelers QB once said) and not just a "one trick speed pony". Jerry Rice had the best work ethic in the history of sports and that's one of the reasons he became the greatest receiver in the game. Wallace has a work ethic that's comparable and he realizes that nothing will be handed to him, he'll have to earn everything he gets. It's good to see that he stays after practice and really wants to get to know his QB and have Ben know him so they can be on the same page. I like the track this guy is on and think he has a good shot of being one of the great ones in this game.

eh...don't get me wrong, I like Wallace, but all he has is the quick slant and deep ball right now. He needs to develop a lot more to be in that category, especially when he gets older and he loses the after burners...

I still believe Holmes is the better route runner.

Can't really argue with that. I guess the point is he realizes that he's going to have to work hard to become a complete receiver and he seems more than willing to put in the time and effort to do so. When Rice was first drafted out of Southern Mississippi, he wasn't the fastest guy or the most polished route runner either, but he worked and studied harder than any other receiver to play the game. If Wallace will follow that lead, given the fact he's tons faster than Rice, the sky is the limit. He can't rely on his speed forever, but if he'll work on his route running and improving his football intelligence, watch out!

His game has already improved greatly from his first season and he'll just keep getting better with his attitude and work ethic. He'll be a much better asset to us then Holmes ever could of been, Holmes can't be the deep threat this guy is. Keep working on those routes, keep working on being in total sync with Ben and Wallace will be a great one no doubt about it. Rice's greatest attribute was his yards after the catch and Wallace has been adding that to his game. I love when the deep ball stuff works but to me it's those yards after the catch plays that are really exciting.

Heck yeah. I think he's an ok route runner right now, but as that develops he'll be a huge threat. The way his game has improved over the last season is dynamic. I really do think Wallace will be one of the "great ones" in the league. :herewego:

Yeah, I'm getting more and more excited about Wallace all the time. After the flop that Sweed was, and with Santonio gone, I really liked what I saw with Wallace last year, and this year he's just been getting better. I can't wait to see what his future holds as a Steeler as he continues to develop.

I like to know what Fitzgerald said to him on the sidelines, when Wallace ran out of bounds near the end of the game, I saw Fitz pat him on the shoulders. That's one guy I would love to see come here is Fitz, that guy plays with passion.

How can we know what kind of route runner Wallace is when the only thing BA will allow him to do is go deep on every play that is designed for him? Also, in regard to a previous post, Jerry Rice didn't go to Southern Miss. He went to Miss. Valley St. I do like Mike though and feel like he actually "gets" what it means to be a Steeler.

Is Mike Wallace the fastest receiver in the NFL?

If he is not the fastest he would be a close second to Brandon Lloyd. The fastest on the team prior Mike coming to the Steelers was Ike Taylor.

Llyod's had some of the best mits in the league for years, but he's not the fastest anything. Not sure where you got that.

This was a comparison that I had read but don't recall exactly the source but they were measuring pure downfield speed and not combine times without equipment.

I like Wallace but like others said he still has work to do....he is not the go to guy at the end of the game, once the long ball is shut down he dissappears in the 2nd half.

I don't know how good his vertical leap is, but that would be a nice tool to have near the goal line. Everything is pretty much on the fly which is working for now, sometimes you have a steal a few in the air, I don't see him being aggressive in the air, looks like he eases off.

Holy Jerry Rice comparisons!! :roflmao: Sorry for digging this thread up. When I get bored I browse the back... I wish I'd remembered this post when we were having all of those Mike Wallace debates over the last couple years!

I was about to say, "Nice to see that we were once on the same page," but the truth is I was never this in love with Wallace. Still - you, me, and Mike all saw his potential. And to a certain degree he really lived up to it. But before he could get all the way there, he could smell his pay day coming and he throttled down. Then Haley came and gutted his play style. Then pay day came, and his potential was never to be lived up to again.

Is that a sequence of events you and I can finally agree on?

Yeah, I thought about it. I know a lot of people don't like it. I guess it's some kind of faux pas? It amuses me. I like glimpses into the past every once in awhile. Sometimes you get something really odd.

I actually don't care about that necroposting stuff, I think its funny how angry people get over that. I just meant you could have left it buried because it made so many of us look doopid. :goofy:

Haha, oh yeah, that reason. But that's the point!! Good thing we don't still have the old board, or there'd be a lot of Kraig Urbik love coming from me. Curtis Brown, too. I loved those picks.

:lolol: To paraphrase a (not so) great politician, I voted that Wallace would be a great WR before I voted that he was an overhyped diva, lol. Looking back I can see why I got a little excited when reading stuff like this:
"I catch 100 balls a day, and they're all with a purpose,'' Wallace said. "I'm working on the precision of my routes every day and getting better. We're getting to the point where we really know each other, and I can read what he wants me to do on a route. It's not like he has to say in the huddle, 'Mike, if the DB's gonna overrun the route here, just hold up and I'll throw it short.' I know when to adjust what I'm doing. That doesn't just happen. We throw every day. We grind it.''

Forgive me for ever mentioning the guy in the same breath as Jerry Rice. With the benefit of hindsight, it's easy to see now that he's actually more comparable to Renaldo Nehemiah. I think you make a good point, he smelled the cayash and for whatever reason throttled down. He began thinking he had arrived but his GPS was obviously screwed up.

Man, Snack, you must have been some kind of bored to dig this up. ;)
