As we all feel the buzz surrounding our current 1st round draft pick, Ryan Shazier, heading into 2014, I thought I would take a look back at our 2013 1st orund pick, Jarvis Jones. I'll be the first to admit I was enamoured with JJ. I had him as a Top 5 pick and quite frankly was stunned when he was still hanging around at #17. Did his pro day show some holes in his game? Absolutely. However, I thought his tape was strong enough to warrant a high selection. At #17 - I was overjoyed.

So after watching every piece of tape possible on the internet of Ryan Shazier, how does Shazier stack up against JJ? Its not a 100% complete fair assessment since they played in different schemes in different positions, but if you wanted me to predict who will be a better NFL player, I would have to go with Shazier. His speed just stands out. Jones is a bit bigger and a bit more stout with better hands, but the way Shazier flies around I think he will be a STAR. As I said last year, it was a weak draft class. Whereas this year was a very strong class.

That being said, I am very optimistic of Jarvis Jones moving on. After depleting tape to watch on Shazier, I went back and studied Jarvis Jones. I know I made a big deal before last year's draft that Jones manhandled DJ Fluker, an eventual 1st round pick of the San Diego Chargers. What I didn't fully comprehend last year, simply because he was essentially a rookie, but Jarvis actually notched 2 sacks against this year's #2 overall pick Greg Robinson.

On his first sack, I can't completely fault Robinson. He was engaged with the Georgia DE while Jones back off into coverage. JJ then came streaking in past Robinson and the Auburn TE who lost sight of him. On the second sack, Jones blew past Robinson to the inside, who seems confused on his assignment, side-stepped Trey Mason, and brought down the QB.

I also thought JJ should have actually been credited with an additional half sack as he beat Robinson with an outside-in move and buried the Auburn QB who already had another Georgia player around his ankles.

So JJ had a great day vs DJ Fluker the 11th pick of the 2013 draft and Greg Robinson, the #2 pick in the 2014 draft. In the Florida game, he also tormented Xavier Nixon, who went undrafted but did start a game for the Colts last year. He also had a sack on Matt Patchan, then with Florida, but transferred to Boston College for 2013 but went undrafted.

Another fun tape to watch is Georgia vs Vanderbilt from 2012. You get to see JJ go up against Wesley Johnson on numerous occasions. While Jones' sacks came against the RT, JJ and Johnson definitely had some great battles.

While we will see how JJ does at ROLB this season, I definitely think he would be better off at LOLB. He seems to have more success coming off that side. If Jason Worilds isn't back in 2015, I would not be surprised to see Jones move into that position.

That being said, for 2014, if the LB corps we go with is indeed Jones, Timmons, Shazier & Worilds, I would be expecting big things from all of them. I would certainly expect to see Jones get a bump up in production too. I could envision him being in the 60 tackle and 6 sack range. He has now had a full off season to prepare and learn. He will also be a full time starter. The kid is tough. I think we will see a big step up in productivity in 2014 from #95.

Enough of the college days.. i want to see postive NFL footage i want to see progression I want to see strength extending his attributes. Mr. "mentor" Porter will help achieve his goals. Jones has the correct attitude just needs retooled for the NFL.

    Cool.

    You mean LOLB?

Couldn't agree more! Jones has a year under his belt, Worilds had finally seen the light the last time we saw him so I'm looking forward to him more than ever, Shazier is just a freak who will make plays even if he also gives them up, and Timmons will have better surroundings. This is the most excited I've been about our LBs since '08.

Jarvis is THE key to the season next year... We need sacks and pressure next year to be successful. Doesn't matter how many CB's we draft....

I'm not sure Jarvis is going to be a sack machine we want him to be. But he is always around the ball, he has a knack for creating fumbles or swatting down passes.

I believe the key to his success and Worilds will be how disruptive the front seven can be. If opposing teams have to account for multiple threats it begins to favor the defense and LB's in particular.

All in all; I want to see what Porter can teach him! He would also benefit from Harrison's tutelage. If he gets over the run yourself wide past the play stuff and gets that secondary move to the inside/outside, he'll be beast.

This the second time today I have read that statement and it makes me remember how people are going after Mike Adams for his performance against the Vikings. I can remember at least one if not two of the QB sacks or pressures where he forced Jared Allen way outside and around the pocket where he finally got to Ben. So when I saw that I siad to myself to bad we don't play against more QB's like Ben, guys who hang on to the ball way too long.:lolol:

I believe Jones will become a force. If you watch tape from college and his rookie season it is very telling. In college he looked "comfortable" and you could see it in his play. Watching him this last season he didn't look very "comfortable" and you could see it in his play. If he can get that comfort and confidence I think he will be a good one.

HE has a LOOOOOOOOOng way to go,
better be some production, or you might start to hear the B word.
5 sacks min would be a good place to start.

Give JJ time. He's still young to the system but has the potential. Also, lining up on the side of Heyward, McClendon, or Tuitt helps.

A year after the fact, yup. I record as many games as my DVR can take during the season and make notes. I was looking through my notes I made last year and saw "2 sacks vs Auburn (Greg Robinson)". I didn't make much of it last year because like I said, Greg Robinson wasn't a household name last year. It sent me back to the the Georgia vs Auburn game 2012 on youtube.

Yup, LOLB. Nothing like a typo to ruin a well made point :lolol:. Agreed. Love when our LB situation is right now, especially if Spence can regain his form.

Unless there's a massive drop off - i.e. his 40 time drops to 15 minutes or something - I think anyone using the B word after 2 seasons needs to be taking more Ritalin.

well not really thig. no, i don't feel this way nor do i think jj will be, but after two years and if the production we need from that spot just isn't there it is a possibility. he didn't come in here and learn from the bench, they made him the starter so he got the majority of the reps. you certainly do have to consider that possibility.

there have been some flashes from him and i think we worked so hard to shore him up against the run and his reads in coverage that he didn't work as much on just a pass rush. if JP can help that part of his game then i think it will come together for him but slowly. i'm not sure JJ is a great intelligent mind. he even speaks of how hard it was grasping the film of what we want to do every week as well as what the other team does on tape. in college he was more physically gifted them some they played against, now not so much.

to be honest i think timmons falls in that range too. things just don't compute as quickly for him. all the physical gifts in the world, but quick processing of data is not a strong suite and thats OK. it can still come with repitition for both of them. timmons has gotten better every year. bust no, longer to reach the place we need them, yes.

no DL's defense isn't easy to learn and no i don't want it to be. i've seen it when it's clicking and it will again. losts of new parts that have to become one are still a work in progress. we have added alot of young and this year we will add more young to it. i think we are a year away from seeing what we really have on defense. not just defense either.

You people mean to tell me that you draft
a guy @ 17 and he didn't get ONE Sack,
that this is good? I need to start working for
you guys. I guess production doesn't matter?
    LOL

In fairness, he did get 1 sack :lolol:. He also knocked down 4 balls. He only started 8 games. He played the more difficult ROLB position. I thought he handled himself fairly well against the run. I also recall him dropping back into coverage alot. But yes, as a pass rusher, he had a bad season. Still, he was a rookie.

I fully expect him to be better this year.

I agree, it's fun to dissect the draft this early but as the saying goes, it takes a good 3 years to know what you have.

When PFF compared all the 1st round rookie pass rushers last year (Jordan, Ansah, Mingo, Jones, Werner), even though Jones was the least productive in sacks, he was the most productive in hurries. So it's not like he hasn't shown signs - he's just been a hair late to the party. And no, it's not his 40 time responsible for that. He's plenty fast; you can see that on tape. It's his lack of counter-moves, lack of strength, lack of understanding of the defense, and probably lack of confidence. All of that will be improved this year.
