Just caught up and finished the draft. Haven't let it sink in... I'll re-grade after more thought in a couple of weeks.

    Shazier: A
    Tuitt: A
    Archer: C-
    Bryant: A
    Richardson: D
    Johnson: B+
    Zumwalt: C+
    McCullers: A
    Branchflower: C

    Overall: B

(That's a real, "above average" B, not the B that the worst teams get on so many sites.)

    What are yours?

I really wanted secondary help. Very disappointed we didn't get anyone of note in that regard.

    BUT...

On paper at least, we got probably 3 sure starters within 2 years. Maybe 4. And good depth guys to add to the roster. If they develop to their potential, this was a very solid draft, with a couple outstanding players.

I'll have to wait another year for my secondary help I suppose. Failing to address it will cost them points for me.

    A- :D

Did not like the Zumwalt or Branchflower picks at all. Thought we could have grabbed a better CB than Richardson. This will be yet another test with how our guys evaluate CBs if he doesn't pan out. Archer is a complete wildcard. Lotta good players were still on the board, including CBs. I hope he works out. Liked every other pick.

Bringing in Howard Jones as a UDFA soothed my pain of the Zumwalt & Branchflower picks.

I'm feeling underwhelmed after looking at the draft. I'd like to be optimistic, but I'm not seeing any immediate impact players. Yes long term I think shazier & tuitt (and maybe some of the others, but depends on their desire & drive) have potential. Honestly, this year they'll probably try to use archer as a return specialist, but I'm not sure I see much other immediate impact. I hope I'm wrong, but every other time we've drafted top def players, they'll need at least a year to blossom. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm just not feeling the koolaid buzz yet.

This really early, but perhaps not so panicky….

Shazier: A - I have to go "A" here because of the speed that he shows on tape, and his exceptional quickness on inside twist blitzes. He is going to be disruptive as all hell.

Tuitt: A - I am a little bit concerned about whether he will return to 2012 form, but if he does get back and matures further, he can be a Muhammed Wilkerson caliber player by 2015. That's return on investment right there. To me, worst case for him is that he continues to gain weight and becomes a solid, mobile nose tackle.

Archer: C - I am little bit excited to see what he can do for us, but I just think that taking Archer here was too much of a luxury pick for a team that has some holes to plug. If he were a better downfield threat, I'd perhaps feel differently. Honestly, Bryant would have been a better pick here rather than risk him not being there at 118.

Bryant: A+ - So, I have heard about a number of maturity and "football IQ" concerns with Bryant, and those whispers had me concerned about lumping him in with Matthews, Latimer and the other 2nd round WRs. However, if you watch his games you do see at least a 2nd round caliber player. If you look at only highlight film and measureables, you see a top 10 pick. He's that impressive of a raw WR prospect. If he keeps himself straight and makes an effort, the lowest impact that I can see him having is a 4th WR who is dangerous on verticals and really good red zone weapon. If he keeps maturing mentally and is driven to excel, the sky is the limit. Looks like good value in the 4th to me.

Richardson: C - If it weren't for the Lake connection, I'd be down on this pick. He was one of a very large group of immature corners that I liked as 4th-5th round prospects. However, I didn't like his tape nearly as much as guys like Terrance Mitchell, Bennett Jackson, Rashaud Reynolds and others. On top of that, a mature and good EJ Gaines was still available, and I saw him as a guy who could immediately be our 4th corner and contribute. I am going to give the front office and Lake the benefit of the doubt here, but I'm not excited.

Johnson: B+ I think he'll be fine. He looks to be a good technician and can get the job done at multiple positions. I actually think he'll get the last O-line roster spot on the final 53, and not go to the practice squad. By 2015, I think he'll be a contributing multi-position backup for us.

Zumwalt: F - Sorry, but this pick made zero sense to me given the talent available and the logjam that we already have at ILB. Zumwalt is a decent football player, and IF he makes the team he will be a good special teamer. However, you can say the same exact thing about ILBs that we already have on the roster. I'm not sure what our FO saw in Zumwalt to think that he is going to do anything more than replace Williams or Garvin with a similar caliber player. If we hadn't gone ILB already in the 1st, then I think this would have been a good pick. Yuck.

McCullers: Incomplete - I have to go back and watch film on McCullers to know how I feel. However, on paper this looks like a great addition for the 6th round comp pick. If he can be a solid 2 down nose tackle that helps us get to 3rd and long, then there's huge value here.

Branchflower: C - There's potential there, but again I just think there were too many solid (to me anyway) corner and OLB prospects still on the board.

I'm still digesting everything, but I am generally positive about this draft. My concerns are more with what we didn't get than what we got:

    1. No/limited OLB help in the draft or UDFAs. I know SC NB is high on Howard Jones, but the only non-combine tape that I can find on him was an all star game where he was controlled by whoever blocked him. There's potential, but not for 2014 IMO. I really hoped for Jeffcoat in the 7th.

    2. Obviously corner remains a concern. Like I said above, the Lake connection with Shaq gives me some comfort, but even if he pans out, I don't see any help in 2014.

Elvis - Watch the 2012 Alabama tape of McCullers. Great tape to watch. He is going up against Steen/Jones/Warmack all game. He gives them everything they can handle. He comes off the blocks better than I would have imagined. Lacy did very little all game, and while Yeldon's final numbers looked impressive, I think he had a 77 yard TD that was run away from the Mt McCullers.

I have two concerns regarding the Big Man.

    1. I hear alot of interviews of teammates & coaches all say the same thing. It all resembles "If Daniel wants to be, he can be unstoppable." It sounds like there is a recognizable consistency issues with McCullers.

    2. Interviews with McCullers himself and some of the stories you read - he just comes off as such a nice guy. Kind of a "Friendly Giant". I don't think he has the nastiness you may want in a NT.

It will be interesting to see if he sticks and dominates or was merely a fun pick to talk about who didn't make it.

i like this half FULL sentiment. My definition of a successful draft is grabbing players who are future significant contributors...not role players or special teams guys. I think we have some future starters...maybe sooner than later. I read somewhere that only 30% of players taken in the 6/7 rounds end up 'making it' in the NFL, so it's like throwing darts with these picks, and thus I don't give them a lot of attention for our grade...BUT some media guys had McCullers a round 2-3 prospect, so this does bump us up a little. I think A- is the right call...even though I was amongst those screaming for a CB.

I would love love to know IF Fuller was available, would we have taken him? OR was Shazier the pick all along.

Yeah NB, I watched both Alabama games for McCullers. You can see the potential, but it's also easy to see why he made it as far in the draft as he did. He plays high and gives up leverage a lot, and when that happens he can be controlled by one blocker. He's a project to be sure. I had also read about his mild mannered nature which led me to compare him to "Fezzik" from the Princess Bride in another thread last night. My guess is that he gets a year on the practice squad, and gets evaluated after the season for promotion or release. I hope they can coach him up.

I don't understand the McCullers pick since I'm looking at it as Cam Thomas is a NT and not a DE. We just signed Thomas to a contract, I doubt we cut him.

What are the chances McCullers makes the team and doesn't get put in the PS squad only to be stolen away.

let me say this. all of that is correct but he has had three different systems while at tenn. he was ask to play a nose in a 3-4 under sunseri when he had no idea what they wanted. not because he didn't know how to play nt. it was because for some reason sunseri wanted his nt to get penetration and shed blocks instead of taking on blockers.

that experiment went horribly. he just needs consistency. once you show and tell him what you want him to do and he learns it. he could very well be unstoppable. first day in weight room at ten he done things you couldn't believe. when he gets to Pittsburgh he will run through walls for these coaches. he WILL make the 53 man roster

An article in the Post Gazette yesterday said Justin Gilbert was the pick but when the Bengals took him, the pick was Odell Beckham. After he was chosen the pick shifted to Shazier, whose agent was on the phone with the Cowboys when the Steelers selected him.

They still need depth, Cam will probably play both DE and NT.

I am not one to give grades per say, but I will give my impressions.

Shazier: I initially did not like this pick. If he is everything the coaches think he can be, this will be an easy A, especially if Jones and Worilds do what is expected of them as well. Jones/Shazier/Timmons/Worilds can be a very, very good group. I do think had Fuller fallen one more spot...he would have been ours. I do find it strange that we sat on here for weeks saying that Fuller would be drafted too early if we took him at 15, Dennard is the guy that fell and we didn't want him.

Tuitt: Absolutely love this pick. We are talking about a 1st round talent. Had this been the 2012 draft he probably would have been a top 10 pick. Had he stayed in school one more year...I think the same way.

Archer: Hated this pick, and I still do. To me, this change of pace type player is overvalued by the Steelers. How many times have we tried to find this player. Batch? LSH? Rainey? The small kid they brought in as a camp invite? Had we taken a CB here, I think the Richardson pick makes much more sense.

Bryant: Another pick I love. I probably would have liked it better had this been Bryant at 3 and Desir or another CB here in 4, but I love the pick and I love his potential.

Richardson: I understand drafting a CB here and I trust Lake knows this player. I would feel more comfortable here had we not taken another project corner in the 5th last year and just let him go with no development or had we taken a CB in one of the 2 picks prior.

Johnson: I feel like Munch might have an understanding with this player that we don't. Having been in Tenn last year he might have had extra time to watch him. I really like him honestly. 51 starts and 2 holding penalties? Incredible honestly.

Zumwalt: I am okay with this pick if we put him into perspective, but I would have preferred an OLB who would truly be an OLB for us. If he can move to the outside, then I feel better about this pick. With Timmons, Shazier, Williams, Garvin, Wilson, and Spence already as options on the inside, adding a 7th ILB when we only have 4 OLB 2 of which are Moats and Carter, I would have preferred an upgrade at OLB. If he moves to the outside of becomes a special teams demon, I feel better about this pick.

McCullers: This was one of those, I don't get it picks, but I assume this is a draft on potential pick one way or another.

Branchflower: Another pick I really love. I like his potential. If his hands are okay and he can block, he really could help us IF he can learn from Heath how to get separation. He basically had NO help on his team, so I'm not sure his numbers are really indicative of his ability.
