We didn't draft Gilbert or Dennard now we have to play them twice a year

OK and we just got one of the best athletes in the draft. 6'2" 42" vert and 4.38 speed. He can remove any TE from the play.

    Shazier is faster than Dennard.

Just to reiterate and help some understand we drafted a LB that is faster than a lot of CBs in the game.

I'm going to withhold comment until tomorrow. I feel like it's my sole responsibility to talk fans off the ledge tonight.
It was a good pick. :smiley1:

It does seem every other team in our division always has a more exciting draft than us... for the last few years at least. I was disappointed we didn't and won't get a top tier talent at corner... I do not get how having a second year in a row being at the bottom of the league in interceptions is not a problem for anyone especially the FO.

We will see... no exciting corners left though so I guess its mediocrity for another year while teams dink and dunk up the field and we keep losing games by last minute passes.

Perhaps the problem is one of perception. If we're drafting for a BUILD of 2 years or more, this was a fantastic pick.

But we had bigger needs for right now.

Shazier will help much sooner then 2 years, he will help next year. There are still some good CB's left that are't that far apart from the ones already taken.

Shazier is a scary athlete that could be a LB equivalent to Troy. Over the past 2 seasons the kid had 249 tackles, 39.5 of them for a loss, 11 sacks, he broke up 15 passes, he forced 7 fumbles, and his Underwear Olympic were obviously crazy good. He's a weapon for Dick LeBeau to play with.

Perhaps. Although the recent history of our defense says he won't even see the field for 2-3 years... (but that's a different discussion)

What I mean is that if we are building for 2-3 years, then getting a top tier CB may happen next year... or the next. And when all is said and done, we're back to being a hardcore #1 D.

But if the goal is to stop the bleeding right now, secondary is a bigger need.

Pressure can't get there when everything within 7-10 yards is left uncovered. And even if it is, as long as the ball doesn't go near Troy, the worst that can happen for our opponents is an incomplete pass.

    Just saying... ;)

7-10 coverage falls upon linebacker core and Relentless pressure, to begin with is the best preventative measure.

This is Timmons but faster and I remember loving that pick but I couldn't sell him at the time.

I think they wanted Fuller but Chi knew it and snatched him up so the best move was Shazier or Mosely. They chose Shazier.

    It was the smart play.

When we've been able to bring heat, good things have happened. Turnovers included. What we need is for Cortez Allen to finally step up and take Ike's job.

Williams and Garvin saw the field immediately, and their investment and potential is nothing compared to Shazier. Our defenders usually don't see the field for awhile because there is already an established starter. Williams - Garvin - Spence? That's hardly the case now.

I like the pick, but for the two years in a row now I have seen us pass on a good player at an obvious position of need only to see that same player get picked by the Bengals.

I had Shazier neck and neck with CJ Mosley in my rankings. I think Mosley is a more sound overall LB. His floor is high, but Shazier's ceiling is much much higher.

I thought the Browns made a good pick with Gilbert, while gaining a 1st round pick for next year. But Manziel? C'mon. Any Steeler fan that think Manziel is going to cause us much of a problem is mistaken. Another huge mistake for the Browns.

As for the Bengals, Dennard is a good player, but I don't think he will ever be special.

I think of all the AFC North picks last night, Shazier will have the biggest impact!

I agree. I think Mosley may be a bit better in a steady kind of way - IF he can stay healthy. However, Shazier should make more big plays. I was pretty happy with the pick once Fuller was off the board. I would have preferred to trade down, but from the way things played out I am guessing that the phones may not have been ringing.

I don't know that it can be said any better than this. Do you want a flashy move or a solid foundation for long term success? I wanted fuller, but obviously that wasn't an option. This is a solid pick for the team.

I agree with this and what RayD had stated previously. I would think the Shazier pick is for an immediate need and I have a hunch he will share the ILB with Moats and will likely
be playing his rookie year. The organization seems to know something we don't.

I would have liked to get a CB as I believe this to be a more of an immediate need then an OLB or ILB. That being said there will be alot of quality corners available in later rounds.

I think Shazier starts from Day 1. I also think that he is rarely going to come off the field, unless we have 6 DBs out there.

I can see him playing Inside on 1st and 2nd down then rushing the passer on 3rd down.

I know Mack got a lot more publicity, and he probably is a little stouter against the run, but I fully expect Shazier to be as productive, if not more so, than Mack. From a PRODUCTION standpoint, I think we just got a Top 5 pick.

I have watched cj throughout his career at bama. he will be good. he is a good zone cover backer but he struggles in man. he also struggles against bigger lineman which is what I hear the knock on shazier might be.

cj gets owned and is exposed when teams run right at him. example watch the auburn game last season and lsu two years ago. I still love him but he is no way head and shoulders above shazier from what I have read about him

I don' know. I am not too excited about the guy that are left and I just have a feeling will won't address it in the second either because we just for some reason do not find corners that important regardless of what has been blatantly obvious the past few seasons. I feel like the guys that are left are just more of the same.
