Okay, here we go. I think this is my third annual mock draft and so far, I've gotten exactly ZERO picks correct. FWIW:

1st Round - Darqueze Dennard, CB Michigan - No great surprise here. Denard is a tough, physical CB who excels in run support, just the kind of CB the Steelers love. He's also a pretty good cover corner despite a lack of top line speed. He'll be a nice fit for our defense.

2nd Round - Louis Nix, NT Notre Dame - The Steelers make a trade with the Jags to move up seven spots to grab Nix. The Steelers and Jags swap second round position and the Steelers give the Jags their fourth rounder. The Steelers grab Casey Hampton 2.0 (we hope).

3rd Round (comp pick) - C.J. Fiedorowicz, TE Iowa - This guy is about as close to a Heath Miller clone as has come out in the last few years so who better to become Heath's successor. CJF has great size, good enough speed and soft hands for a big man. AND...he can block! Sound familiar?

5th Round - Devin Street, WR Pittsburgh - The Steelers grab their big WR in their own backyard. Street is not a burner but he has great hands, high points the ball and does something that all Steeler fans appreciate; he makes contested catches. One scouting report said he stays FOCUSED from whistle to whistle. Refreshing when we used to have a WR here who had a problem with focus.

5th Round (comp pick) - Khairi Fortt, OLB California - Another player the Steelers should have some familiarity with since he's a Penn State transfer. Fortt is an aggressive, if not always effective, pass rusher and shows an ability to turn and run with the receiver. He also has a reputation for being a very disciplined player which should appeal to LeBeau and Butler.

6th Round - DeAnthony Thomas, RB Oregon - The Steelers get their change of pace guy here. Thomas is an electrifying player who will be a nice complement to the big backs. Durability will be an issue given his size but he represents great value at this point in the draft.

6th Round (comp pick) - Bennet Jackson, CB Notre Dame - Another physical CB who excels in run support. Also an experienced special teamer.

7th Round - Jay Bromley, DT Syracuse - Strong and disciplined player who had double digit sacks from the interior of the line. Good run stopper as well. Considered to be a very coachable and intelligent player who prepares hard. John Mitchell will love him.

There you have it, such as it is. I can also see the Steelers possibly trading up in the first if they have an opportunity to draft Mike Evans or Justin Gilbert. Should be an interesting draft and any way you slice it, it will be a crucial draft for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They've made some good moves in free agency, now it's time to ensure the team's success for the next 5-7 years by having a successful draft!

    Thoughts?

I think we have a 6th round comp, not a 7th. Good mock, but I hope we don't trade up. We're going to need that 4th rounder, and there will be lots of options for us at #46. In fact, depending on who's available, it might be a good idea to trade down.

Oops, you're right Snack. Didn't change my picks though. I think if someone like Nix or even Benjamin falls into the second round the Steelers could make a move up there since they have a need at each of those positions. Thanks for the feedback.

I don't mind the picks but I would hate to see us trade up for anyone in the first 3 rounds. we need those picks

Good choices, Jack, but not a fan of trading up and pick Jared Abbrederis over Street, who is a better version IMO.

I understand the reluctance to trade up. But my thought is if you can possibly get another first round talent in the early second round you ought to consider it.

    First thoughts:

    1. I think Dennard is a popular choice right now. I think this is because alot of people have the Lions choosing a CB, probably Gilbert. Although there's been alot of talk lately the Lions are interested in moving up for Watkins. Something to think about it. Even if they don't, I'm not completely sold that the Lions would choose Gilbert over Dennard in the first place.

    2. I don't think Nix will last until #46. I would be chocked if he did. Now, Tuitt, maybe.

    3. CJ is a pretty solid TE and good value at the end of Round 3. I've said before, he is kind of a Matt Spaeth type TE. I'm not sure what our long term plans are with Spaeth, but I wouldn't want both of these guys long-term.

    4. Not sure Thomas lasts until 6th round and not sure Bromley lasts until the 7th.

    5. I may be in the minority, but I can't envision not taking 1 OL in this draft.

As the GM of the Detroit Lions, we are quite happy with Gilbert as our pick

On a serious note, I think you are underselling CJ, he has much better hands then Spaeth, thats never been part of his game but I think CJ would be used much more in that regard.

I would draft a WR in the 3rd over a TE, maybe someone like Donte Moncrief. The first 2 picks are solid though.

I've been reading that Dennard is going to slip far, well past 15.

I don't either, that's why I have the Steelers trading up to the Jags spot to grab him earlier in the 2nd round. And I actually think CJF is closer to Heath than he is to Spaeth.

Woops, glossed over that trade, although I was wondering what happened to our 4th. I see what you did now.:lolol:

I am usually a trade up guy, and since we have two mid-late round comp picks, maybe it makes sense, but with this draft being so deep, I just don't know if I can do it this year. Plus, I'm o n record as saying I don't think Nix gets past the Chargers in Round 1.

As for CJ, I really do like him, but unfortunately, all I see is a reliable possession TE, who is a great blocker. Heath had 20 TDs in 3 years at Virginia. CJ had 10 in 4 years.

I think that may be more a circumstance of the system then his ability.

We do have a 7th, but not a comp pick in the 7th.

I like Abbrederis, but I think there's a good shot of him being gone when the Steelers pick in the 5th.

Heath had a pretty good QB named Matt Schaub throwing to him.

    gotcha.;)

yea, I agree and think cj is way closer to heath. cj has game enough to play early in his career. cj at iowa, latimer wr, bolser te from indiana were all underused in there systems and could end up better pros. cj's got as good as quickness numbers of any of the TE's. one heck of a blocker( pro ready now), and a great pair of hands that he uses to catch the ball with. yea he's that good and could be heath 2. like we cloned him me thinks.

I like fortt a lot. he could end up pretty good inside or possibly outside on the right side. I like him a lot as a possible LB pick for us.

I still like street if he's sitting there in the 5th or 6th. he may not be a #2 at this point, but I think he's Justin brown with more deep potential. latimer from Indiana is another with even better skills and could possibly be there in the 4th or 5th right now. they both have some height and decent hands and speed. I'm really not sure if these top ranked guys are as polished as some of these lower ranked guys. just higher profile schools and used more in their offenses.
