I think it was a great sign and if you want to know why he has been with 3 teams in a short period of time just look at the teams. The Titans had extreme needs at other positions, the bucs had a coach that wanted to run an offensive that didn't involve a power run option, and the Pats don't pay much or even offer much for RBs, plus they have a few that are ok in the stable and already on the team for this season, so why pay more or offer more years for a power running back. I think he fits here and he will be an asset if the oline struggles as this is a guy that make a hole, Bell is capable but I think Blount has more power to run through guys.

I generally like Blount, but does it really make sense to let Dwyer leave on a 1 year $750,000 contract, and turn around any give Blount $3.85M/2 years including a $950K signing bonus to be a backup? It's hard for me to make sense of how Kevin Colbert handles our roster and cap.

Supposedly Dwyer thought he had a better opportunity in Arizona, and chose it over Pittsburgh.

Why? Both of them averaged 3.8 yards a carry in 1995.

I'm sure that is the case. However I'm sure offering him just what we gave Blount as a signing bonus would have influenced his decision making. Like I said, I generally like Blount, but I don't think I like him $1m a year more than I like Dwyer as a backup.

yeah it does because Blount is that much better then Dwyer. I had high hopes for Dwyer. He didn't want to put in the work it took to be an NFL player when he came into the league and my guess he may never recover from that.

Oh, definitely...but, why would you offer someone like Dwyer that kind of money?

So that you don't end up paying Blount that plus another million to be a backup. $1.9m is fine for a backup QB, not a backup RB.

    I
Yeah because our 2 ypc average last year when Bell was out shows you don't need a really good back up. Dwyer was part of that bunch.

Dwyer averaged 4.0 yards a carry last season and averages 4.2 yards per carry for his career.

Why nickle and dime yourself into mediocrity and or problems 1 year later trying to fill a need. We've played that card and know it well.

This level it's all about guaranteed money not what the press release states or what goes on the agent's brag board. When it's all said and done he'll probably take about a million.2 give or take this season. In today's NFL is a 27 yr old, 6 ft+, 250 lbs man that can run a 4.5, with 20 TDs to his name and extremely hard to take down worth it?

Or we can go back to the rotation of 2 or 3 mediocre for about 750 k a piece and still be looking this time next year.

    The price Is right Bob
    IMO

Its a very affordable price for a much better RB, always upgrade in talent if you have the chance.

I don't like the idea of handing out contracts that are only a good value if disaster strikes.

We have too many actual holes in our starting lineup that need addressing to spend this kind of money on a backup RB on a passing team in a pass happy league. We have significant holes at WR, LT, DE, NT, ILB, CB and possibly even ROLB. Those aren't a lack of depth, those are holes in our starting lineup.

If recent history is any indication, our backup RB's tend to become starters at some point during the season. Just sayin...

Perhaps, but why the rush to sign a backup? Blount is not going to be the last RB available. Why not wait until after the draft to see how things shake out for us and other teams around the league?

btw this isn't about Blount. I had the same attitude towards other RBs we were sniffing around before too. It just doesn't make any sense to me to be in this type of hurry to fill a backup position at this price ... especially when we all know that they will now try to find a "change of pace RB" that will further dilute Blount's value.

IMO this is like spending a bunch of money patching a leaky roof while flood waters are rising all around you. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

It's not passing the sniff test to me either.

But of course it's a better use of money than Redman at $1.3 million last year. Same type of cap usage (except for the $500k dead money next year) and a much better prospect.

That said, I sort of agree we could have waited it out. What if Andre Williams slides in the draft and becomes available in round 5 or 6? Wouldn't he be a wise investment? Now with Blount guaranteed on the roster, Williams is probably off our draft board. In fact, we probably FORCE a 3rd down smaller back in the Stephens-Howling mold in the 5th or 6th round over Williams just because we seem to love to have at least one smaller, quicker, 3rd down back on the roster (even if they don't much).

I'm not poo pooing the move too much. If I can live with Redman at $1.3 million, I guess I can live with Blount at about $1.5 million on the books this year and $500k as dead money next year (with an option to keep him at $2.5 million cap hit).

    We'll see.

we did need a vet, feature type guy. I'm not so sure we don't grab a guy like archer in the 5th or 6th either as the returner, wr, rb capable type of player. he would give you quite a bang for your buck on the gameday 47. I like our fa's we have sitting here. maysonet, poole, alexander as a possible true 3rd guy, but having archer would free that spot up and the other guy would be an inactive mainly or a ST's player. with will j on the gameday roster, I doubt we would have 5 RB's active. archer gives you that replacement at two offensive spots and takes care of you return duties. blount as the backup feature guy makes sense, but it will change what we do somewhat without bells flexibility, but again that's where dri archer could become an asset.

He's been with 3 different teams because he's not very good and he's got a terrible attitude. He can't catch a ball to save his life, is a terrible blocker, is surprisingly easy to tackle until he gets up to speed, and has struggled his entire career to understand playbooks. The guy will have good rushing numbers in the right scheme, but I'm not so sure he's the right guy for us
