Was just reading an article about the secondary and at the bottom was an update on Spence, very encouraging. Keep your fingers crossed that he can hold up to the rigors of training. :praying:

    Spence update

Inside linebacker Sean Spence, who has not played since sustaining a severe knee injury as a rookie in the 2012 preseason, is expected to be ready to take part in the team’s offseason training activities.
That, however, does not mean Spence, a third-round draft choice from Miami, is ready to resume playing.
General manager Kevin Colbert said the team will monitor Spence’s progress in organized team activities (OTAs) and get a better idea of what they can expect from him for training camp. Spence returned to practice on a limited basis last season, but that lasted only a couple days because he sustained another injury in workouts.
“Because it was such a severe injury, you have to monitor where he is on a day-to-day basis and back-to-back days practicing because we didn’t get to see that,” Colbert said.
“The glimpse that we saw was great, but it was a small sample, and you didn’t get to see if there was going to be side effects from extra work.
“That’s something we’ll find out throughout the spring and the summer.”

It would be huge for the Steelers if he is able to return and pan out.

Actually, would it? They just spent last season developing 2 ILBs and this would add another one to the mix. He's been out of competitive football for 2+ years now.

He'd have to come in looking like he did in Preseason a few years ago. I love the kid and his story , I just don't see that he'd be able to knock either of those 2 out of the rotation.

Williams is just a 2 down back and he beat out Garvin. So yes if he pans out Spence would be an improvement.

If nothing else, at least it helps with the depth issues
    For crying out loud

Not sure what people saw in Williams? I was never overly impressed with him. Rookie or not, I'm not sure he is an upgrade over Foote, and that's not saying much. IF Spence can come back it would be huge. He would push for the job or at least split time worst case. ILB for this team need to be more like Farrior, and Spence would be that guy IMO.

As a rookie he was an upgrade over foote. Your words. Foote played in out system for what 5 years then again for 2 years. Foote knew the system in and out. Williams was an upgrade over a veteran that knew every in and out. I say that speaks pretty well of Williams.

Spence is far more suited for the Mack position no? Farrior was Buck.

I like the potential storyline if he can turn this around and dominate. I know it's not likely but the chance to become a legend here is what he is fighting for. Go Spence!

Look, I'm all for pulling for they guy, but you have to temper expectations. He may be able to make it back and play productive football, but let's not hand him the starting job before we see what he can actually do on the field after coming back.

As far as depth, I thought it was well known that this team needs OLB help?

It's a great story, and also great of the Steelers to keep going with him - which speaks a world about what potential he showed when he came here.

I do remember that he was also considered a little small for the conventional ILB role, and there was talk of a hybrid LB/S role for him. I wonder if that would still materialise? I tend to agree with Lizard - we shouldn't expect too much from him, and he's competing for one of only two positions on D where we seem to have some depth already.

I think garvin is playing that role of LB/S for now. as for spence, here's praying for ya kid. if he only makes it back as a ST'er it will be nice to see. what a shame too. this is a long time to be re-habbing. we write or read a thread every now and again about him, but he lives this every day, for two years, trying to just cut when you run. it has to take a toll on him. how disappointed will he be if it's another year? I hope he keeps his head in it and on it. being around here with the guys has to help.:applaud::cool:

I gotta say I don't get the Spence thing. He is a third round pick who is injury-prone and has never played a snap of a regular season game. I like a feel-good comeback story as much as the next guy, but we don't even know if he would have been any good if he didn't get injured in the first place.

Injury prone? Wow, thats harsh, 1 injury that happened to be catastrophic and he gets labeled injury prone.

He was a 3rd round pick, not an UDFA, you expect returns from your first 3 picks, third round isn't that late of a pick. The fact that this kid has defied all odds so far shows his determination and fight, would love to have that same effort and grit on the field.

Foote was awful. High school kids are better than he was. The only reason Williams was on the field was due to a lack of depth, and of course Spence and his injury. Williams is a backup type and I see nothing but average player from the guy. Hope he proves me wrong but he won't be making any pro bowls anytime soon. I have my opinion and you have yours but if he is our starter once again this year that's not saying much
