Trying to figure out if I watch that gif long enough, will he get to the end of it. :lolol:

But yes, FAs signing elewhere has nothing to do with Tomlin. Its about money and opportunity.

I do think this is a good discussion point. Apparently, players do like to play for Tomlin but the question is are they willing to take less to play for him? The perception over the last few seasons in free agency is that Pittsburgh doesn't seem to have the appeal it once did. I'm basing that on just the observation that we have seemed to lose a few free agents, including some of our own, for reasonable salaries that it appears that we could have matched. Now I know that a lot goes on behind the scenes that I'm not privy to, but my perception is that Pittsburgh is not the desired NFL destination that maybe it once was.

I thought Carrington's was reasonable although now it looks like the full $1.5 million was guaranteed. Dwyer signed a reasonable deal to go the to Cards. I think the Steelers could have paid Al Woods what the Titans paid him. The Steelers offered James Harrison more than the Bengals offered but I realize our offer was off the table when he signed. I know we can cite some examples of players sticking around for less too so it's probably a wash but before we get too critical of 12to88 I think he brings up a perfectly valid line of discussion.

Bottom line- money talks. I will add that just last week Lance Moore said that "seeing all those Lombardi's" clinched his decision to sign here.

You're not a capitalist, Jack, if you are being a 100% honest on some of your answers in the past. What you consider a comparable amount is probably a considerable amount to others.

Money talks for most people and will choose that over how much they like or dont like a coach.

I get that it's money, but Jack's point is valid, too. How much money are we talking? I'd have to research it, but a number of FAs sign with the Pats for "under" market value because, they say, they want to win.

Except for Charlie Batch, I can't recall any players the Steelers have signed who've said they took less to win.

I'm a Steeler homer, so there's some bias: but who in their right mind would want to play for Oakland or Jacksonville over the Steelers when the difference in offers (as Jack states) is rather minimal? Taking the team part of it, there's also Tomlin (who is revered by players, it seems) and the simple fact that Pittsburgh is rated as one of the best cities to live in. #11 here: http://images.businessweek.com/slideshows/2012-09-26/americas-50-best-cities#slide41

However, this doesn't appear to be the case in New England. Players have taken less just to play there.

it's one thing to like a coach, but with the extra millions you may get elsewhere, you can call him every day or go visit once a week with that type of money. it doesn't mean they still don't like him, or would love to play for him for that type of money. is he that cool to give up 6 or 7 figures to play for?

I had not read that. Good to know. Lance Moore just became my favorite WR on the team. :applaud:

Exceptions to every rule, Can find you examples in every sport, but the ones who choose money far outweigh the ones who don't.

Who are the players in NE? Not challenging you, just curious as to who they are? Even Tom Bradys contract isnt the generosity it appears to be.

There are any number of factors associated with a signing.

First....as has been stated numerous times $$$$$. Sometimes it isn't necessarily about the total number of the contract, but the total guaranteed.

Second....opportunity. Can I start or will I be a role player? Are they planning on drafting a guy at my position?

Third....pretty much everything else. What team....what coach...am I from that city so I have family there...All of those are ranked differently for each player. Cotchery, family was a big deal.

Oh, if you only knew, my friend. I don't understand where this came from. I believe my comment above was in reference to players taking essentially the same thing (that's what I meant by comparable) to play for Tomlin and the Steelers. How does that make me anti-capitalist?

I could easily replace New England for Pittsburgh in this thread. Dane Fletcher, Brandon Spikes, Cory Grissom, and Aqib Talib all went off to sign with other teams this off-season. Some of them for easily matchable contracts. They've only re-signed two of their own free agents, and Edelman shopped the free agency market hard before finally re-signing. Wilfork asked for a release, took his name plate off his locker, and said he was done before they gave him new money through extension.

From the NFL fan's perspective, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
