I'm sure if Ben has neck surgery and shortly after becomes a free agent, he will take note to ask for less than what Tom Brady is currently making.

Not sure what else was he meant to get from the article?

But, what if Ben's wife takes a cue from this article and all is for nothing?

It's funny that even though he wanted less, his agent and I'm sure the Broncos as well, wouldn't let him take less.

Most players look at it like they only have so many years to make this cash so they need to make as much as they can, and I can agree with that. Look at Porter, he made all that cash and still went broke.

its really only qb's that can afford to give a discount, but why isn't it done more often and at a larger discount???

Flacco had leverage he just won the Super Bowl, also he was the MVP in the game. Flacco is 4-5 years younger than Ben too so that makes a difference also.

You can structure a deal that provides NEW MONEY (i.e. added to the current 2-year left) that equals 4-years, $80 million.

That would be a contract in the 6-years, $108 million range but you could announce it as a 4-year, $80 million extension. Thus allowing the agent to get to that $20 million/season "magic number" and sell his success to other clients. I've done some examples of deals that could work for the Steelers and Roethlisberger and make his take home pay over the next three seasons somewhere in the neighborhood of $56 million, which is more than Flacco and Romo got in their first 3 seasons. The Steelers could make that entire $56 million over the next three seasons guaranteed as well (for injury or otherwise) since their not going to release him over that time frame anyhow.

Why is everybody so worried about Ben's contract? Hasnt he restructrured a couple times over the past few years to save the steelers cap money? What makes everybody think he is going to turn into the greedy ass that all the other qb's are this time? He wants to win and understands the idea that the less money he makes the more money they can spend elsewhere. I don't think he is going to try to break the bank.

He's going to take this team to the bank! He remembers how ready they were to drop him over some allegations! He will not forget! Just like Hannibal's Elephants!

What I got out of this is that Peyton is exactly who I thought he was. What it has to do with Ben is above my pay-grade.

Exactly. It's the new money that matters. Total average in the $17.5 Mil APY neighborhood, but in new money terms something like $20.4 Mil APY (beating the Flacco magic number). $30 Mil signing bonus and a low first year cap figure would clear $4-4.5 Mil in 2014 cap space.

What I got out of the story was hearsay. Peyton did sign the contract, so let's not make a martyr out of him.

    Bravo!
    Exactly my thoughts.
Maybe it's true, maybe it isn't. Or maybe parts of it are true. IDK. IDC. All I know is that he DID sign the contract.

They can restructure Bens contract and trim his cap liability by 6.3 million, they can give him a new contract at the end of this season, even Ben should be able to see this is the best for him and the team...
