For the life of me I can't understand why people want to sign every FA that comes down the pike yet overlook JH. I know we need depth and not advocating James Harrison would be our saviour... but dam it, he knows our system..he's healthy and in great shape! Give the boy another chance to help this organization he so admires and let us forget about all the talk on age it's only biological!! I'm being serious, I would have already shook his hand as in a (gentlemen's agreement) and soon as Woodley's cap relief was off the table i'd have him signed by 12:01 am June 2nd.

Is it a case of Moats OR Harrison?

Moats seems to me like the kind of signing we did with that former Bengal the other year... completely forget his name, but basically solid veteran back up.

Harrison would probably occupy a slightly different role.

Harrison is a 1 year maybe 2 year at best bandaid while at 26 Moats could be here for 5 or 6 years. One is a bandaid at best and the other could be a long term solution. I'm not saying moats will be defensive map or lead the league in sacks, but Harrison isn't going to either. However, if we were to sign Harrison we will be lacking depth at the same position next year while Moats should give us some long term stability.

Harrison could provide quality depth now. There is no learning curve. Based on his stats why would we want Moats around any longer. Give me the proven stop gap now and then we have the draft and any UDFA sleepers to try and find a better long term solution.

Exactly. Moats could provide depth at ILB behind Timmons/Williams and play special teams whereas Harrison could play outside behind Jones.

Exactly. I don't even want Moats around for one year let alone 6. Whoever we draft can step in next year, Moats isn't offering anything that a draft pick can't do.

That's sort of the point, though. The M.O. is to try to acquire cheap/value insurance clauses.

This was my thought since the story broke.. not only serve as depth but a mentor as well. Another asset will be Porter's charisma i believe this defense could have an acute impact for 2014. JH would serve more than being a "bandaid" as mentioned though not a starter. No surprise we need long term solution looking for a strong pick that can be polished in the 3-4. Short depth in others areas are in discussion.

I am curious if the people who don't want the team to resign Harrison, in favor of someone younger, are the same people who were so happy that the team resigned Bettis to a one year deal after they lost to the Pats in the playoffs in 2004.

Bettis offered short yardage runs and leadership. He couldn't play special teams. He was technically the number 2 back in 2005, but had Parker been hurt, our running game would have been somewhat terrible.

Harrison offers situational pass rushing and stout run stopping, as well as leadership, in a backup role. He can't/won't play special teams. He will probably take vet minimum like Bettis did. He wouldn't be a starter, however if one of our starters gets hurt, that position won't completely lack.

Signing Harrison to veteran minimum is a no-brainer to me. You don't often find a Hall of Fame caliber player, and one does not simply insert a "young" guy and think he will be better. Thaddius Gibson anyone?

Still need him. Moats could be depth for inside. Im sure this deal isn't for much, shouldn't hinder signing JH if they want him.

Exactly...they could easily bring in more LB depth...and see what "sticks" come camp/etc. This guy reminds me of the Brandon Johnson signing a couple years back...he can play ILB and OLB.

Far more likely that this narrows Spence's chances this year which were slim to begin with.

    WELCOME ARTHUR MOATS!:applaud:
I liked Moats as a draft prospect in 2010, (40 time- 4.66) . Maybe this will be good for him and the steelers.

so you think we can have all pro players at each position? sorry but I am grouping you with everyone else who hates these signings. I am really curious as to why this guy or any guy for that matter cant succeed here

As someone who has said that you cant have all pros at every position let alone for depth, even I feel this does nothing more then having a body. He hasn't had a sack in 2 years and only 61 tackles in 4 years. I get it, hes a back up but this is an uninspiring move. Having said that, I generally dont have a problem with how the offseason is unfolding. Wasnt pleased we lost Cotch but made up for it by signing Moore.

I value your opinion on a lot of topics covered here. I agree he is really no better than a backup but do you think he can be coached up. I mean he was pretty good coming out of college and does have some talent from what I remember

now to be honest i don't know moats very well but from what i read he was mediocre in buffalo , so why we need to sign him here long term ..? when i saw a one year signing i sayd i can live with that , let's see if he has something , i know we can't have all probowlers

Personally I'm not impressed with this signing...... playing behind buffalo's d-line shoul've been the easiest job in the world, but he was only mildly effective, and sometimes nonexistant....if he is playing significant min. For us, than we are in big trouble

$795,000 total. $730,000 base salary, and $65,000 signing bonus. This will count as a veteran minimum salary benefit. His base salary should only count $570,000 against the cap.
