Yeah, it's a $2 Mil roster bonus due on the 5th day of league year in '15. His cap number this year is $2.2 mil, including a $500K roster bonus.

His contract is essentially a 2 year commitment...which is great.

Yes, but it's still just one pick. Think of it this way ...

    1. you want to buy a $1 candy bar but you have no money

    2. you ask me to loan you $1 and promise to give me $1.25 tomorrow

    3. You use the $1 to buy the candy bar

    4. the next day you pay off the loan by giving me $1.25

The candy bar cost you $1.25

The $1 you used to actually pay for the candy bar doesn't factor into the cost

Mitchell says he took less money to play for the Steelers! Says it's a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Never said who, but did say there were 8-10 teams interested. Said playing alongside Troy and playing for the best organization in football made his decision easy.
Guys seems really smart and a good person. If he can play this is going to be a great pick up.

Interesting, he must either have been a fan growing up or he really does want to play in Pittsburgh. Conversely, he has seen what Lake has done for some guys over the few years he's been DB coach. The Steelers will lose him pretty soon I fear.

Well, he was born in KY in '89 so it kind of makes sense. Carolina didn't have a team until 1994 and Tennessee until '97. He would have seen plenty of Steelers coverage growing up.

Cant ask for any better coaches then DL and Lake to teach you. I think this is going to be one of those signing you look back on as a steal.

The consensus on this board seems to be positive overall with this signing, but tell me again why that's the case. The guy was the 35th best safety in football last year which happened to be his only semi-successful year in the league. He couldn't crack the Raiders starting lineup. Let me repeat that. HE COULDN'T CRACK THE RAIDERS STARTING LINEUP!!! He didn't appear on the top 100 free agents report that I saw last night. He was something like the 10th best free agent safety available with RYAN CLARK one spot ahead of him. I don't know guys. Make me feel better about this signing. Please.

Guess it depends on who you listen too, some other group had him ranked 10th. The guy hits hard and is fast, had a break out year last season. You can look at it as an aberration or a sign of things to come, to me, seems like the later.

I sure hope so. The Steelers seemed to have him pegged judging from how quickly they signed him. He's got the raw skills and the switch did seem to go on for him last year. Being coached by Lake won't hurt either.

Thanks, Blast. I'm feeling better already. :smiley1:

He's a improvement over Clark, they need some speed in the secondary. None of the Steelers secondary players had 4ints or 3.5 sacks like Mitchell did last season.

    Anytime! :hello:

I mentioned that in another thread, Gay's game was much improved under Lake, he should do wonders for Mitchell :lolol:

NFL.com had him rated as the #57 free agent overall, and I think he was the 4th or 5th safety on their list, so I think there are plenty of "experts" out there who think we got a decent player. If this had been a deal where $10 million of the $25 million was an up front guarantee, I would have felt a bit edgy about it. However, the way the deal is structured the only real risk is that he underperforms and we need to have Allen and Thomas play more than we expected in 2014. We're not going to eat a big salary cap turd sandwich if he doesn't pan out. We'll know where we stand by the 2015 draft, and in 2014 we'll have the position covered decently if Troy stays healthy.

Every free agent says the exact same thing. I can't remember the last free agent that didn't claim to have left money on the table to accept the deal they signed because they "wanted to play here". It's pretty comical.

I think his plan was just to get that awesome player. They love Thomas. I hated the trade, but I love the pick.

    1. He is probably versatile enough to play both S positions, so he's good depth right now. We all know Troy could tear something at any moment.
    2. He can play slot corner, which is impressive for a safety. He looked promising there last year. That will get him on the field now.
    3. Now we can play three safeties at once with three starting-caliber safeties for a change. And his ability to play CB will make it harder for offenses to know what to expect.
    4. Special teams. Fast and hard hitting, and didn't look too careless with his tackling like he did on some of his college tape. Helps us now.
    5. Intangibles. Smart, hard-working, high character, physical presence. Good for the team now.

    6. He will eventually take over for Troy and will have time to make it a gradual transition. Losing Troy will hurt. Having Shark hit the ground running will cushion the blow.

Nah, just a third. They traded their future third for that 4th round pick, but they got to keep their own 4th round pick (used it on Landry Jones). It was a straight swap. You could say he's a 3rd round pick that we pay like a 4th rounder I guess.

I think the free agent rankings are ridiculous. Colbert & Co. thought he would be the perfect fit. They made a two year commitment. Mitchell has the physical tools necessary, and then some. He seems to have the intangibles. They were right about Ryan Clark, weren't they? Let's see him in action before fretting about his PFF scores and NFL.com FA ranking.

I mean, liking or disliking it is natural and that's what this board is for. I guess what irks me is that some take these rankings as facts. Not only are they not facts, they're not even really predictions. Systems have so much to do with it. So many guys tank in a new place because they don't have the system or supporting cast or whatever. And other guys flourish (like Mitchell has done once so far, and like Ryan Clark did in 2006). Then there're injuries. Luck. Being wrong. I remember when Albert Haynesworth was as hyped as Revis.
