One thing to remember too is that it appears the Steelers will have some more wiggle room in upcoming seasons with the cap w/the TV money kicking in it is expected to be as high as $140M after next year and maybe near $150M the season after next.

Colbert and company may be figuring that into their long term plans with the thought that this gives them next season to keep Woodley and give Jones another year to develop. They also buy some time to re-structure Ben as well. I think it is doubtful the Steelers will approach the extension w/Ben until after next season.

I still think Ike will be back too, but at a much reduced salary. I make a bet Troy doesn't get a pay cut unless he is re-structured with guaranteed money being pushed out.

Can't see how Woodley's release would be next up for the Steelers.

Yeah you would figure next up would be Levi Brown. Now if Brown says hey I will take a paycut to stay here do you think the steelers would do and would you want it.

That's what I was thinking if we can get him back at a team friendly deal he would make for a good backup to have.

I agree. With the amount of money between Worilds and Woodley you start them. Plus, Woodley should be out to prove his worth. Let JJ come off the bench unless he shows vast improvement in training camp.

I disagree. Woodley lost his spot. we shouldn't reward that just because he makes more money. I think a healthy rotation and sub package use will have him on the field a lot anyway which is a plus for the defense overall. we shouldn't retard JJ's play because he does play a spot that worilds and Woodley struggle at too remember. it's a different set of skills needed on that side. Woodley still gets sucked upfield and they run underneath him on the left side, so nothing he does tells me he won't have the same thing happen if he goes to the right side. that's been something he has never learned to do well. he did it from his rookie year. his recovery speed and recognition of coverage would have to get a lot better to play the right side over JJ. remember JJ was learning coverage which he did pretty well. now he needs to learn the pass rush. his strength held that back last year. that should improve. it's not just about the sacks at OLB. there is a lot more to it. don't forget he had a rookie to his inside too. he and Williams should have a lot better grasp of things this year.

Yeah starting a guy because he makes more doesn't make any sense at all.

They shouldn't but it often does make a difference. But that's not why he should be starting over JJ if he's here, he should be starting because he is better. No one is saying to give JJ only a couple snaps a game, he's the future, they should give him quite a bit but the goal is to still win games and they should start whoever they feel gives them the best chance to do that. Right now, I still see that as Woodley.

Woodley is like worilds from what I've seen. the right side is not friendly to him. JJ already does a lot better than Woodley. it's just the sacks that are lacking from that side. he is still disruptive and a better fit for us on the right. it's a different position from that side, but in the sub package Woodley and worilds are the better fit. as pass rushing DE's at this point. there should be plenty of snaps in a rotation for all of them this year. base and sub packages.

my only concern is if he is destined for the chopping block next year, any draft pick we get will not see much field time this year and we will have an unproven backup next year as well. I think it will work out but we are in a good position on one hand and behind the 8 ball on the other. time will tell I guess.

Something to keep in mind is that the Steelers can rescind the transition tag, so it's to Worlids advantage to negotiate a longer term deal a little mor quickly?

No, they can't withdraw the tag once he signs/accepts it. At this point, he has the leverage. He can just sit back and decide he's happy with the 9+ Mil guarantee for one year. I doubt it, but...

Surprised w/ the transition tag as you don't see it much in the NFL but it looks like the smart play to me. Both sides know where they want to be in money and placement or the tag would never have happened. Look for a long term deal sooner rather than later on this one.

It's not beneficial to rid ourselves of Woodley in any way right now, other than cash, but this deal spells disaster for him.

Agree Timmons is up next on the restructure list. Timmons/Worilds, not bad, not bad at all.

On the whole Woodley angle - to cut, or not to cut - I had mentioned this the other day in another thread: it makes sense for both sides to agree on a reduced salary for 2014. We all know why it would work for the team. It works for Woodley because having his salary cut to say, $4 million, is a great alternative to being a post-June 1 cut. If he is cut on June 1, is there any way that he gets anywhere close to $4 million for the 2014 season after the past 2 1/2 years of nagging injuries and limited on-field production? I don't think so, especially when you look at what guys with more recent production like Shaun Phillips and John Abraham got last year.

As far as the "post June 1st cut" goes, I believe that Woodley could be cut today and still be designated as a post June 1st cut.

True, but I don't believe you get the cap relief until June 1st though? That would give us the money for our rookie pool but we still need to free up some money to sign potential free agents. I expect something to happen with Ike fairly quick, more than likely today.
