So does this imply anything for Woodley??? Can they keep both?

People, ask yourselves Is Jason Worilds
worth this kind of money? What has
he done so great to get this type of money?
And you wonder why we are 8and8.
Mismanagement is what we have here in PGH.
    POOR evaluators of talent.

No. And if anyone thinks that Woodley will take a pay cut is crazy. He is being called out here. Hopefully Worilds is retained and Woodley is cut after June 1st to spread the money over the next two years. Cutting Levi Brown and Ike Taylor will free up a boatload. Then restructure Troy and sign him to another year. I believe that Foote will be back, not that much of a hit.
Then Ben's extension needs to be dealt with. This could save some as well.

if we didn't have colons still hanging over us i would agree. ike will still cost nearly 5 mil. to cut. between these two which we don't have on the team and also woodley thats alot of dead money this year minus 3 players. then we have to sign people for at least two of those spots. then add 9+ for worilds plus sign two more players and we are well over 32 mil.

yes but if we keep woodley his cap hit would be the same . so let's cut him and draft one in the middle rounds , he is useless anyway from the bench

I'm probably alone here but they should keep Woodley, no one they draft will help us this season, even a often injured shell of himself Woodley gave us more then JJ did.

Draft one and keep your fingers crossed that Woodley can stay healthy for a season and then you can explore dumping him. You'll have JJ with 2 seasons under his belt by then and whoever they draft this year will be more ready to produce.

I don't get wrapped up in the money side of it, so much has been made of how much it will hurt to cut him now, wait till after June 1st, don't cut him, makes your head spin. None of us fans truly know the ins and outs of that stuff, we just go by what we read, unless your TTF, that guys a freak, he actually may be Omar.

If we are in cap compliance, can sign our rookie class and bring in a piece or two, what do I care if they have 26 million wrapped up in 3 olb's????

Anyway, I'm talking purely from an athletic standpoint, on the field, the team would be better off with Woodley this season then without him. Unless they cut Woodley and bring in a FA. Do you really want to go into next season with Worilds and JJ and some rookie we draft????

i would take a year to clean all the heavy contracts that are not performing on the field , bring a lot of rookies and some cheap free agent and then have a big cap room in 2015 to fill a team that can be a contender for real . but colbert will never accept a failure like this.

Worilds has signed his transition tag. A couple reports are saying he and the Steelers are making progress towards a long term deal. No offers can come for him now.

So, it looks like the Steelers are serious about keeping Worilds around long term.

Now the real question is, is Jason Worilds serious about staying in Pittsburgh?

He signed the tag quicker than I thought he would. Did he do this because he is committed to working out a long term deal in Pittsburgh? Or did he sign this tag as a BIG short term raise. He may know if he stays in Pittsburgh for 1 year, he is getting a big pay raise and it will force us to part ways with Woodley. With Worilds presumably playing LOLB full time, he might rack up a big season with 10+ sacks. He could then test the open market next year for an even BIGGER payday.

I'd have to think he's serious about signing a long term deal. Though, there is the possibility he had reason to suspect the Steelers would withdraw the tag.

So what kind of a deal are we looking at? It would have to be a deal similar to Kruger wouldn't it? In the ball park of 5 years 40 million? Still a pretty hefty contract for us to swallow. Would you agree that this pretty much spells the end of Woodley's tenure in Pittsburgh?

I guess I'm still a bit confused about this. Why wouldn't Worilds sign this tag when it guarantees him that $9 mil next season? Does he and his agent honestly think he's worth more than that?

And was mentioned in this thread about trying to get others to take a pay cut (like Ike), anyone familiar with how that works in regards to the cap? Say Ike takes a 2.5 million pay cut. Does that money he isn't getting paid go back towards to cap number?

That was my next question. Were does this leave Woodley? They have to make Worilds a starter at that price. Do we bench Jarvis Jones and put Woodley on that side? Or do we bench Woodley?

That's higher than what I think he'll get. I would think somewhere in the $6.5/$7Mil APY range if I had to guess. First year being much lower in terms of cap number.

I don't think it means the end for Woodley. Not necessarily.

If he didn't sign it, he lets his agent go try to find a big contract somewhere.
Yes, if they renegotiate a smaller contract the difference is off the books.

    This my take..........

Worilds is a 2nd draft choice, worked hard to become a starter on a team with a history of great LBer players, waited to get his shot playing behind Woodley & Harrison, got his shot and was shot down by a rookie who while flashed some talent didn't out perform him. He was hurt and took it personally and said he'd only return here if guaranteed a starters role.

The team trans tagged him saying we want you but we'll let you & your agent test the market. Worilds signed his tag quickly and this is so very important and here's why:

    1) This is telling the team his heart & loyalty is here. He decided not to test the market and I promise you he would have gotten a bigger contract somewhere else and his agent knows it.

    2) This locks him in this year and makes a long term deal very possible. When on the field he's very effective.

    3) This also tells JJ don't get cocky and comfortable, get to work and get better.

    4) It tells Woodley, this may be the end, or near the end unless something changes quickly. Three years of no production is too much for the money.

Guys, defense wins championships, and if we are to remain a 3-4 team we must have OLBers who can do their job well. JJ didn't last year, Woodley was a third year no show and Worilds is the best we have, even with his nagging injurys.

I predict a 5 yr 38 mil contract with 10-15 mil guaranteed. Heavy incentive laden.

The raiders had 65 mil in cap space before it went up. The eagles had their eyes on worilds. and the top OLB in Brian O. was taken off the market with the Fran. Tag making Worild the Top OLB in FA.
