do the steelers take a chnce on moving down in more than one round? kevin Colbert says this is the deepest draft he has ever seen, would it be in our best interest to trade down in a couple of different rounds to aquire a lot of picks? I know giving up a chance at everyones favorite guy in each round could be derailed a bit but getting a lot of players that are at or near the same quality. could it add to our comeback to prominence quicker this way?

I hope they at least explore that option. I think they are in a perfect position to trade back a few spots, still get a quality player and still fill a need. Colbert already said its a deep draft...why not take advantage of that. I look at SF as the perfect partner they should have 12 picks after their comps. come in. They should be looking to swoop in and nab a player that puts them over the top. As much as I wouldn't mind seeing us take Mosley I think he could be an option for them after what happened to Bowman. There's no way they can put 12 picks on their roster so it makes perfect sense.

I like the idea of trading down, but only for the right price. I'd hate to trade down from 15 into the 20's and then miss on the guy that we wanted. This year's first round pick will probably be another day one starter in 2014, so we have to make sure we get the guy that fits the bill for us.

It all depends, I think ole KC /MT
better hit a homer in this draft. We have
    LOTS of weakness on defense.

I'm not as sure we do have a lot of weaknesses on defense. everybody wants young guys on the field and when young guys are on the field they won't play like seasoned vets.

    mclendons first year of starting.

    woods first meaningful year.

cortez allens not seen a ton of field time.

    Williams at ILB first year.

heywards first year as a starter.

    JJ's first year.

    shamarko's first year.

    garvins first year.

even worilds as a full time starter is new to him.

gay has been gone too and just back fresh with a lot of different faces from when he left. so that's just the defensive side of the ball.

a lot of these guys have now got some of that early field time out of the way and can now know how to prepare and know whats in store for them. they should know their way around much better this year and know what the defense is doing, and what to expect from just a playing time standpoint.

it takes some time with so many new parts even for the vets, but everyone wants to blame DL and his scheme as being old and young players not being able to learn it.:bscow:

Why move down if a need player is the best available, would we move down if the best receiver, corner or OT in the draft is available at 15, you move down if a top player you need isn't there, but to move down just get a lower caliber player and a low pick doesn't make sense to me.....

at receiver with the depth of the position, I don't think it's really a clear cut difference in the ability of several guys ranked as 2nd rounder to first rounders. or 2nd to 3rd and so on. same as TE. you should be able to get quality well into the mid rounds.

As I've been saying for months (ugh, did I just do that?), this WR crop is the deepest in years. It's really not that "top heavy" at all.

Mac, can you honestly say that you do not
see weaknesses in our current defense?
I don't believe that, Your much to knowledgable
to think this. KC/MT better load up on DB's/LB.
Or we will continue to fall behind the leaders.

db's we need because of age and no depth. LB'ers we need because of injury and subpar play from Woodley for the money we are paying and not knowing if we will or can sign worilds. ILB I can live with for a year to see what these guys do year two. same with JJ. I'm saying we have a lot of first year talent on the team and I'm not going to just say we need more young players to fix last year. we have a lot of youth all over this defense. it doesn't happen overnight. do we bench or cut Williams and garvin just based on their first season? do we replace shamarko Thomas based on last year? do we replace mclendon after one season of starting? do we just dump Williams and arnfelt before we see what they are capable of? all can't be fixed with just draft picks and expect a huge turnaround. that's what I'm saying. I do agree the front office put us in this spot not the scheme.

There's only 5 TE's that I'm interested in and 1 who's clearly better than the rest IMO..

I think it is all dependent on how they approach the draft Mac. If they are looking for starters then I can see them trading down to stockpile picks, more than likely they would stand pat and pick the player they have been coveting. If they are looking at getting position depth and lots of it then yes I can see them trading down and stockpiling picks. As others may have mentioned they seem to be better at picking late round diamonds and undrafted guys that shine when given the opportunity than they do in teh first few rounds.

McLendon is 28 years old and Woods turns 27 next month. If you're waiting for either to blossom, I hope you packed a lunch.

Patience is not a virtue many fans possess. I agree with you, they have players in place that have little experience, all the guys you listed will be even better next season. They need to build on last years picks though, can't afford to have a bad draft here.

there is so much depth in this one, I think it would be hard to screw up. we will still be young on defense and as you say patience is a virtue. it will come, but it won't be an instant top 5 defense if that's what fans are expecting. the defense is mostly a rebuild around Timmons, heyward and allen.
