Interesting, I had not heard anything about them communicating that to Ben.

I hadn't heard that either, but if true, the Steelers have Mike Evans or Kelvin Benjamin on their mind. Allen Robinson, Jordan Matthews, and maybe even Martavis Bryant could be options in round 2 as well.

I don't know. I always think Jerry is full of $$$$. Of course, it's completely likely that they'll take a big receiver. Many people think that, and the options are definitely available.

If you had that info, and you're a reporter, would you wait until the question came up in a chat session to break that nugget? :hmmm:

    :lolol: Great point!

I'm still hoping its true though. If we could walk away from this draft with either Mike Evans or Jordan Matthews I would be quite happy.

Can anyone remember a year since Ben became entrenched as the starter that he hasn't wanted a tall receiver either in the draft or through free agency and the front office has said yep we are going to get Ben his tall receiver? I mean it is kinda like those of us who want a return to a power run game, it gets talked about to death during the off season but nothing ever comes of it. I swear you could reprint these stories from three years ago :lolol:

The funny part is Mac that you and I and probably a lot of other on here know it isn't just that he wants a tall receiver he wants one that has speed, ability, and talent. He has tall receivers heck at one point I wondered why they weren't running WR or Rb screens because they had Starks who was 6'8", Heath Miller who is 6'5", Matt Spaeth at 6'7" line everyone of them up at the left side those are some tall trees to put a smaller guy behind and let him get lost. However that isn't what Ben is talking about he wants Plax in his prime

Well, Ben is not just any player. Then again, he would have message discipline. Maybe it's a feint.

I hope Dulac is right give Ben a big productive WR and the offense will be in the top ten of the league.

Right now if I was doing this draft, WR would be the main focus for our offense. Add a really strong target to our group of Brown, Wheaton, Cotchery, Moye, and J. Brown along with our TEs and I think this team can do some damage. TE and RB are also depth concerns, but the starters are solid.

If we take a WR in round 1 or maybe 2, I could see us being a top 10 offense. Now, we just need to fix our defense and that is what the rest of the picks should be used to do.

There's no need to spend a high pick on a receiver. Brown wasn't a high pick, Cotchery wasn't a high pick, Sanders wasn't a high pick, Wallace wasn't a high pick, Ward wasn't a high pick. If you need top notch WRs, then you don't have a franchise QB. This team needs to use it's picks on defense because we have declined and are continuing to decline on every level and in every aspect. Our defense isn't just not what it was ... it flat out sucks. That needs fixing, or we may as well trade Ben away, because won't win anything before he has to retire anyway.

I can't disagree more. You could make the....but XYZ guy wasn't a first rounder....argument for EVERY position in the NFL.

    Brady wasn't a first rounder.
Thurman Thomas wasn't a first rounder.
Shannon Sharpe wasn't a first rounder.
Jack Lambert wasn't a first rounder.

I could go on and on. You can do this for EVERY position in the NFL. The reality is though that players drafted in the first 2 rounds are more likely to be players than in later rounds. That is just the reality.

Our offense AND defense need improvement. I think someone pointed out that you basically have to have a top 10 offense and a top 10 defense in order to compete in this league. While the defense was more visually an issue this year, the reality is they both finished right around 15/16th this year in the league. BOTH have holes that need filled.

To me, knowing that both have holes, I think the O is more easily fixed than the D. A receiver is much more likely to turn the offense into a top 10 than having a defensive player turn the D into a top 10 (see Jarvis Jones this year).

As bad as our D was this year, let's look at who we had who were making larger or new contributions this year on D.

    Heyward
    McLendon
    Woods
    Williams
    Jones
    Worilds
    Allen
    S. Thomas
    Garvin

That is basically 9 guys who were playing a larger role than ever before. Heyward was getting 10 snaps a game last year, if that. This year he stepped up. Jones and Williams and S. Thomas weren't even on the team last year. Worilds was basically a role player sitting behind Harrison and Woodley. McLendon was behind BIG SNACK. Allen didn't start due to Lewis being here.

Our secondary needs work, I think that goes without saying. We need depth at the LB positions. That being said, I think you can make the same argument at those positions...that you can find them later....as you did with WR. I am not saying we HAVE to take a WR in order to succeed as we have J. Brown, Wheaton, and Moye who may all be able to contribute, only that if someone like Watkins or Evans drops to us in round 1 or Matthews or Benjamin in round 2...they just might be the BPA available and it would make sense for us to take them.

You missed the point. You can win without standout WRs if you have a franchise QB. We've done it. Drafting WRs high in hopes of winning track meets is a fools errand. Denver just shattered offensive records left and right, and then got shattered by the Seahawks. Ben and a decent OL is plenty on offense.
