Last year? No, but think the drop off had much more to do with personnel then it did with scheme.

Prior to last year, hell yeah, perfectly happy with the defense. I think its ridiculous that people try to dismiss our ranking in those years.

As for Tebow, we were missing several important players in that game, plus, maybe give Tebow a little credit, we weren't the only team he beat that year and he did lead his team to the playoffs. Say what you want about the guys QB skills but can't deny he is a leader and winner.

i think that year started showing our secondary downturn, age. dip in coverage skills without reloading.

curtis brown not becoming a player hasn't helped. drafting of hawthorne and terrence fredrick not even making the final cuts. the kid from penn state that never could get on the field in preseason and the kid from miami van dyne they kept bringing in and never panned out. antwone blake, i. green, devon smith. all fails at cb depth. thats alot of misses. they have to draft well this year or we are in deep doo.

Nobody deserves a lifetime contract based on past successes. I'm with you that we give him one more year and send him off with the fanfare and honor he has earned though. I like that idea.

I agree with you very much. Worilds has shown he is much better/more comfortable at LOLB than ROLB for whatever reason. Woodley is a stronger player when healthy than Worilds and his contract makes him hard to unload.

The irony here is Worilds wants a starting position guaranteed... what if Kony Ealy fell to the Steelers in Rd 2 but wasn't given a chance because Worilds position was guaranteed?

The Steelers are definitely missing Keenan Lewis right now though. Still not sure why they could not keep him... that is disappointing.

Jarvis Jones makes or breaks this defense next season.

A couple of thoughts here: I'm not sure Worilds was saying he should have started over either Harrison or Woodley, but it sounds like he almost felt that he was being held back in a sense. It's as if someone told him that no matter what you do at this point in your career you are not starting, period. He sounded demoralized in a sense. I look at somebody like Cam Heyward. He FINALLY got the opportunity to start and turned into a dominant player. Many of us were a little frustrated as to why it took so long to put him in the starting lineup. Why did Hood start over him? Is it because of the mentality we seem to have that we're not going to allow a younger player to supplant an older player? I realize Hood us only a year or two more tenured than Heyward, but we all saw that Heyward is a superstar in the making. Why wasn't he playing sooner?

I also agree wholeheartedly with what you said about JJ. It is a make or break season for him and if he struggles in his second year the way he did in his first, that's bad news for our defense.

I agree. Cam should have started last season at either LDE or RDE as he has been the best player on the DL for 2 seasons now. Last year he was on pace for 79 tackles had he played the same number of snaps as Keisel. Heyward is Richard Seymour good.

On the whole the Steelers defense plays much more disciplined than other NFL defenses. I watch other teams and am amazed how often they over pursue (that 49ers DB who broke contain on Russell Wilson for example in the Championship game)... and that is on a superb defense.

Look what happens when Clark can't play on defense in Denver.

I agree that the Steelers should be playing their best players but I think that has been the veterans until recently.

    Agreed..

Lewis left to go home. The Steelers had no chance of resigning him.

Our young guys always come along slow....They don't don't see the field enough to do anything fast..Practice is one thing but, no matter what it is there is nothing better than on the job training. This is a problem!

Here is a little research i did tonight.......
Since 1987 (that's as far back as i went) the number of rookies that have started 10 games or more for the Pittsburgh Steelers Defense is.......6.........Yep a grand total of 6..... In 26 years!!!
Thats Shocking!! In those 26 years only Kendrell Bell in 2001,Darren Perry in 1992 started the full season with Carnell Lake starting 15 games in 1989.......A quarter of a century and we only have 3 guys that have started right out of collage...:hmmm:

Interesting. I wonder how that compares to other teams. I don't really have an issue with rookies not starting, but I would like to see them contributing more significantly earlier in their careers.

Bristers research doesn't surprise me, especially from where he started (wonder if those numbers were better the few years before that). We started putting together some good talent from 87 onward, why would rookies come in and start? Theyd only start if the people in front of them were not very good.

Now pick a team that is a perennial loser and I better rookies start more often.

Looks like a number of rookies will start next year because the people in front of them are not very good. :lolol:
