Bettis throwing them "under the bus" is a pun. LOL. Yeah it's not exactly right for Cowher to talk like that since he never seemed to want a franchise guy ya know? Although in his defense I don't know how many we passed up either. I think we're maybe even in a golden age of qbs and maybe that's why it just seems like you can find them easier. But I really don't think you can. There might be some flash in the pan guys but as far as longterm Hall of Famers I still say they are extremely rare.

I think Thigpen82 had a thread on the cowher years and the qbs that were in the drafts during his years as coach
if it wasn't Thigpen then my apologies to who's thread it was. I gonna go hunt it now without my rifle but I will have to rifle through some threads.

LOL. Yeah seems like you're right. I can't remember if it was Thigpen either but I can tell you if it wasn't him and you said it was he is gonna be FURIOUS! So I'd keep that rifle handy. LOL.

So it was gibson43. You owe Thigpen a HUGE apology! Or maybe gibson??? LOL. I don't know how to merge the two but I would say McNair was the guy I would've like to have had on that list.

Crowther was out coached so many times it was hard to watch. Now he talks for a living because if it came down to it he would expose himself by coming back and failing. His legacy will always be squandering AFC championship games at home. He lost the big games too many times for me to care about what his afterthoughts are. If he had a clue he would have beat Dallas.

Man, what is with you two?

Hey, TTF, Blast and Blount are picking on me and I've done absolutely nothing to deserve it! :innocent:

Actually, it's just Blast that's picking on me but Blount is acting as an agitator. :smiley1:

Cowher's just sticking up for his guy as well as calling it as it was. He never had a good QB until Ben and was hesitant to UN cuff him when he needed to. I agree though, his Marty ball approach cost some big games... But he actually coached a hell of a playoff run to get to s.b. 40 and win it.

We we should've beat Dallas but we didn't. We should've been in against the 9ers and weren't. Had we had the Bus at those times, maybe we would have? IDK and we can debate all we want about who was available at QB during those years or how they mishandled Stewart or how good of a coach Cowher actually was. My bottom line is, Bettis was a HUGE part of why the O in his time was even half way relevant.

The thing that many Steeler fans never really care to admit about those Championship Games was that the Steelers were not the better team in two of those losses. Denver was better and favored over the Steelers and though the Steelers were 15-1 in 04 that team was winning games by the skin of their fingernails later in the season while New England was getting better and better throughout the year - the Pats were favored as well. Even the first NE loss was kind of quirky because of the special teams. The SD loss I grant you was awful. The Dallas loss - how can you hang that on Cowher? that was a powerhouse Cowboys team, the line on that game was like 13 points and the Steelers were within one first down of being in FG range to tie the game up - maybe even win it when O'Donnell threw the pick.

There are plenty of things to criticize w/Cowher - he was not a great in game trategy coach, he never really put forth enough effort to address the QB situation, he turtled too much late in games (it worked great in the regular season, not so great in the playoffs) - but all in all it is hard to knock his success so much.

You know you look at a guy like Bill Parcells who is glorified as one of the greatest coaches, HoF etc. and you see some similarities between him in Cowher in that they both were defensive minded, most of their years they never had great QBs, they were known as tough hard nosed coaches. Yet here's the thing career-wise Parcells had a record of 172-130 for a 570 winning percentage and 11-8 in the post season including 2SB victories and 3rd appearance w/NE which they lost to Green Bay. Cowher had a career record of 149-90 for a 623 winning percentage and 12-9 in the post season including 1SB victory and 1 SB loss. Pretty similar. I think that mild upset by the Giants over the Bills is what lifted Parcells to an exalted level - just goes to show you how one game can exacerbate one's status.
