Front page of ESPN reports Mr Rooney wants to extend Ben and his contract, in order to keep him here until he retires. Hoping this will begin the process of clearing some cap room.

I've read the story and tbh i'm not 100% on what Rooney is actually saying. In the article I read last night (not on ESPN but rather a from a phone app) it seemed to indicate that he wants Ben here in 2015 and beyond but I thought he also stated that the team has no interest in talking contract extension at this time either. Almost like he wants Ben here but they may not be interested in paying him. Of course I could be wrong or read the article incorrectly, but that's how I read it.

    Here's what he said:

“I would say that (extending the quarterback’s contract when it has two years left) is not set in stone,” said Rooney. “We’ve done it in the past on a couple of occasions, but it’s not necessarily something that’s automatic. I believe we’ll get something done when it’s appropriate for both sides. I think Ben knows that it’s our intention to have him here beyond his current contract, whenever we get (an extension) done."

ETA- "The only thing I would say about Ben and his situation is I certainly expect that at some point we will do a contract, whether it's this season, or after next season, or after the season after that, but I think Ben will be playing here beyond the current contract."

I agree. You don't want a franchise disgruntled quarterback on your roster. Pay the man!!

I just want him here until he is absolutely done and if I have to break open my piggy bank to make it happen I am fine with that.

I'm highly certain that the $1.47 you have in the piggy bank would ice the deal to keep Ben :lolol:

He wants to re-sign Ben, but he doesn't want to pay top dollar. Ben is under contract for 2 more seasons at a very reasonable rate (2014: $12.1 mil ... 2015: $11.6 mil), and that gives the Steelers some leverage. Ben will get an extension and the signing bonus that goes with it ... as long as he and his agent don't overplay their hand.

I don't think a deal will be done this offseason. Ben had a really good season. He is locked up for another 2 seasons so he does not have enough leverage yet. He will get a bigger deal if he waits until after next season. At that point the Steelers will have to make him the highest paid QB ever. It is going to be very painful financially for the Steelers to keep him.

They need the cap space this year. Don't see any way they wait.

I hear you but what is the incentive for Ben? Unless they are ready now to make him the highest paid QB ever.

No such thing as deserve in pro sports. It's a business and the players make that very clear when they demand $100 million contracts. It works both ways.

I don't think that's Bens priority at this stage of his career, I think they will work out a fair deal for all involved. Guaranteed money of the deal will be the most important thing to Ben.

We'll see. Why wouldn't he demand to be the highest paid QB ever? He can get it somewhere in the league. Teams live and die by their QB's now. You may be right but I believe he will not give Pittsburgh a discount and will insist on the highest salary in the history of the league.

Well I'm not saying that's his priority, if he thinks he has a chance in hell of becoming the highest paid ever, then you bet that he'll try to get it. It all depends what him and his agent believe I guess. I don't think he has a chance of getting that much, but maybe they do
