What is everyone's thoughts on all of these new running QB's and will the Steelers ever ask Big Ben to takeoff on designed runs?

It seems a lot of the NFL coaches are starting to put more emphasis on having QB's just take off as design plays are a big part of their arsenal. Hopefully the only plays Ben makes with his feet are of the scrambling type.

I can see a play here or there where he would bootleg it but not more than one every 3 or 4 games or so.

I say these new QB's that like to run a lot should be hit hard at every opportunity.

    Thoughts?

Tomlin doesn't like it so don't expect to see Ben doing it much, if at all.

I haven't noticed a lot of teams doing it though, even the guys who were doing it a lot have cut down on it, like Kap, he ran much more last season.

Randall Cunningham, Donovan McNabb, Jeff Garcia, Robert Griffin III. I think it's a bad idea and it won't be long before Kaeperdick is hopping around with a brace on one of his legs. I agree that a QB should be hit just as hard as any runner but, do that and Harbaugh would cry and Goodell would be sending the fine notice before the game was over.
Ben's too slow to be much of a threat, IMO.

I can't stand running QBs. It takes all strategy out of football. It's too easy to sit there watch everyone run down field in coverage and then take off. I guess I'm a purest I don't know but to me it's not football.

Your avatar represents very well what I would like to see happen to all of the running QB's. Lay them out!

IDK that it takes the strategy out of football, because it does make the D keep someone on a spy more often and frees up more 1 on 1 coverage for the offense. The only problem is that these guys are more susceptible to hits and injuries. The way starting QB's get paid you cant afford to have that much $$$ sitting on the bench injured all season. They also won't have prolonged careers into their 30's if their speed leaves at all. This fact makes it more imperative that they start early for your team as well. There are definitely pros and cons to having running QB's.

There really isn't any running QB's that are elite passers in the NFL, so it is still possible to shut them down. If there ever was a guy that was a top 5 passer and had 4.4 speed... then he'd be nearly impossible to stop.

Basically there are better atheltes playing QB now than ever before, but until one of them becomes an elite passing threat... the teams with the best pocket passers will be the ones winning the rings

I don't think Ben is agile enough to make those types of running plays. Don't get me wrong, he's an escape artist, and that's one of his most amazing talents.

I'm the same way when QB's leave the pocket. It drives me nuts when defenders ease up, many times looking like they're scared to hit them.

Someone mentioned Kap and Wilson running less, but I think they actually ran more this year believe it or not. I don't see anything wrong with mobile quarterbacks, though. If you can make the throws and make plays with your feet...more power to you.

Not sure there are that many...

    Seattle....Wilson....9th
    San Fran...Kap.....11th
    Carolina...Newton...18th
    Washington...RG3....23rd
    Oakland....Pryor....24th
    Jets......Geno Smith....29th

Some of those aren't really great running guys or they don't run the read option, but that is only 6 out of 32 teams. This is still a pass first league for QBs.

there is a difference in a running qb and a qb that can run. fran Tarkington was a qb that could run. steve young used to cripple teams with his arm and break there back with his legs. there is nothing wrong with qb's that can run too. you just don't build an NFL offense around it.

I have talked this season about getting a guy like Kenny guiton from ohio state if he goes undrafted. why not? he can pass and he can run. as the 3rd qb or a package type guy he could make plays because it's hard to defend everything he can do. he could most likely be a 5th, big wr too. it frees up a couple of positions and also shores up a couple of positions. jones would be if ben went down, but KG could actually fill a role since you have 3 anyway. get some bang for your bucks from that spot.

ben is never going to become a running qb. especially at this stage of his career. I cringe when TH had him running that naked bootleg play they have run two or three times . watch bens face if you can find film on it. shaking his head no, eyes wide as they can be, but smiling, while thinking whewww, glad that's over. no, no big man, you run around in the pocket unless there is an open half a field. ben is effective usually when he has to run though.

jones is a pocket passer, but he can run if need be, it just isn't part of his main stregnths, nor should it be.

I always thought tahj boyd was a good qb that can run well.

if you are going to build your offense around that, you better have more than one of those type guys on the roster.

    This.

Much of Ben's running was for magicians or escape artists . With his hammered body along with the high mileage.. the improved offense and no huddle should keep him in the game for awhile. He looks much better in the pocket than on the Jumbotron running the sidelines :lolol:

Add in that he just doesn't hit the ground right when he does run. I'm in terror when he gets out running on some of those plays.

This Rodgers that you speak of... is this the QB from the Packers that just lost to the 49ers over the weekend....and tell me what's the name of your team that you would like this fine gentleman to play on?

We tried that once.... Kordell Stewart experiment failed miserably. Let's not try it again.

Korky ruined his own career by not staying in the role he had as Slash. WR first, QB second. He always wanted a bigger role than he was actually capable of handling. This probably goes all the way back to his miracle play at Colorado.

Actually it was the carrossel of OC's and trying to change him to a pocket passer that ruined him. Kordells problem was that he was about 14 years to early.

Running Qbs go back a long way before Korky came along, Bobby Douglas rushed for 2654 yards during his 10 year career, randal Cunningham ran for 4,928 yards during his career, of course tarkenton ran for 3,674 yards during his career, korky had 2,874 yards in his 11 year career, but Cunningham was above the rest as a running QB to come along in the last 50 years...

There's a difference between running when plays break down and deigned plays. Kordell would have fit in better today.

He sure wasn't an accurate passer, he had more career picks than touchdowns, so he had to run designed or not, he ran for 38 TDs while he was here, he lasted 1 year with the bears and two years as a backup with the rats doing nothing in the end....

Like I said, wrong era, multiple OC turnover, forced to be pocket passer. Wonder why he failed :hmmm:
