I think you will find on here somewhere I said we needed to keep him. I also called his breakout season last year BUT, I think he and Mike Wallace both decided they wanted to leave. They were childhood buddies

It would have taken a Darrelle Revis type contract to keep him here, no thanks.

Collinsworth, and others, have also said many times that Lewis wanted to go home to N'awlins. Or was that someone else?

[h=1]Apparently Keenan Lewis Wasn't in the Steelers' Free-Agency Plans After All[/h] [h=3]By Andrea Hangst
(AFC North Lead Writer) on March 15, 2013[/h]

The Steelers let Keenan Lewis leave without an offer. Why?

    Jason Bridge-USA TODAY Sports
When Tuesday's start of free agency approached, it seemed to be consensus that the Pittsburgh Steelers' biggest priority was to secure cornerback Keenan Lewis to a long-term deal. The way the Steelers cleared cap space by releasing linebacker James Harrison and restructuring four other contracts hinted that at least Lewis would be among their re-signings.
Instead, Lewis headed out of Pittsburgh to meet with, and eventually sign with, the New Orleans Saints, receiving a five-year deal worth $26.3 million plus a $6 million signing bonus.
Though it sounds like an expensive deal, according to Dave Bryan of SteelersDepot.com, it was one the Steelers could have afforded themselves. The breakdown of the money is such that the contract would have cost the Steelers just $1.72 million in cap space this year—a completely reasonable amount considering the team is presently around $13 million under the salary cap .
    So what happened?

Well, according to Lewis' Twitter feed, the Steelers didn't offer him a new deal at all—not to begin with, and not after he had been courted by the Saints. It appears that Lewis was never the high-priority re-signing we all thought he was heading into the new league year.

The team did what they ultimately had to do financially, and thought (hoped?) Allen and Brown were ready for bigger roles. The numbers were extremely tight in March. They had to restructure the contracts of Antonio Brown, Lawrence Timmons, Ben Roethlisberger, and LaMarr Woodley this spring just to afford basics like tendering RFAs, eRFAs, the rookie draft pool, Practice Squad salaries etc.

Then, they had to restructure Ike Taylor and Heath Miller after the season started to be able to afford in-season signings and cover for potential future injury signings. How much restructuring and can-kicking do people want this team to do in one year?

The Ravens, Patriots and other organizations get lauded for letting free agents play the market, but...

I know exactly what the cap numbers are. I'm going to reserve comment about that article, but I'll just say that Keenan Lewis' contract counted $2.25 Mil against the 2013 salary cap for the Saints. 2014- $4.55 Mil. It also contains a lot of future guaranteed escalators that make the contract a harder one for the Steelers to match. Nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors.

Well, I thought Keenan's cap number was closer to 2.3m in new orleans? Not sure we had the room and he might have already told them not to bother with an offer cause he was home sick? Who knows, it really shouldn't be a big deal just because NO won one playoff game.

For what it's worth, we had 3 players with equal or more PASSES Defended than Keenan Lewis..... Cortez Allen 13, Ike 12, Troy 11, Keenan 11

I question those cap numbers as well:
But,They spent that much to keep Ike here, and he certainly isn't a premium corner by any stretch of the imagination, to lose a talented corner while keeping an under performer boggles the mind...

And we couldn't sign Lewis, but could do this????

Taylor had a base salary of $6 million this season, according to Spotrac. By converting his base salary into a signing bonus the Steelers can spread the cap hit over 2013 and 2014, the final year of Taylor's contract. The move will give Pittsburgh some room to operate, especially if it needs to sign additional players due to injury, but will also increase Taylor's salary cap hit in 2014. Taylor will now count for close to $12 million against Pittsburgh's 2014 salary cap and it would cost the Steelers slightly less than $5 million in dead money to release him.

It wasn't could. It was had to. The team was so cash strapped they had to restructure him to make cap space for potential signings that may have arised due to injuries. Before restructuring him in October, they had only $250,000 in cap space remaining, which is crazy low.

In the long run, you can look at it more like borrowing into next year, as the rollover remaining was mostly from Ike's restructure, if that makes sense.

I said it at the time he left they needed to re-sign him and then have Allen and Lewis as the starting CB's they should've released Taylor and taken the cap hit. When you have young talent you need to make it work financially, stop overpaying for guys in their thirties who aren't performing at a high level.

The article above he says he was never given an offer by the Steelers? I'm sure he did want to play for his home town team, but it didn't sound like he made a choice between them and the Steelers?

He did...but I also remember him saying he wanted to stay a Steeler too. But they never offered him a deal and let him go. This whole thing has been beat to death here and elsewhere...we all would have liked to keep him...they Steelers didnt see/put him in their future plans and thats the end of it. time to move on!

Not to mention, what were they going to do, spend a bunch of money based on one good season? If Worilds wants a ton of cash, he's gone too. Or have we learned nothing with Woodley???

And of course in what has become a far too common occurrence in a DL coached defense the player doesn't get it figured out until the end of his rookie contract making him susceptible to the free agent market. WE MUST BEGIN DEVELOPING THESE PLAYERS A LOT QUICKER THAN IN THE PAST SO WE'LL BE ABLE TO SIGN THEM TO AN EXTENSION AT A MORE OPTIMAL POINT IN THE ROOKIE CONTRACT. You have to have a pretty good idea what you have about halfway through their initial contract but as long as it takes brain surgeons and rocket scientists in order to be effective in LeBeau's complex defense we're never going to be able to keep our defensive superstars. And when you're told, like Worilds was, that no matter what you do or how you perform you're not going to get on the football field then that further exacerbates the issue. I've got a feeling next year that somebody may be starting a thread entitled "we should have never let Worilds get away".
