Considering how many inside linebackers the team has, is there a reason why Garvin wasn't groomed as a safety?

My first instinct here would be his size. Steve Atwater is the only safety I can think of off the top of my head who had his size. That is just my gut, but that doesn't mean my assessment is correct.

He very well could. He was too big and probably too slow to be a safety, if he continues to learn the position and put in the work anything can happen. The fact that he is already seeing snaps says a lot about how well he is progressing. Switching from safety also means he has some coverage skills as well if he does explode into what he could be him and Timmons would be a force.

wow, I just read some comments on the yahoo home page. it's about cinci's punter keeping his humor. it shows him in his hospital bed. the comments at the bottom of the page are really over the top. someone was asking if anyone else heard about the 50,000 dollar bounty out on garvin for someone to snap his neck. another women say for fans of other teams to never go to Pittsburgh for a game they will take your purse or wallet right at the game, that's how we are in Pittsburgh. I was friggin dumbfounded by some of the stuff being said. wow, just wow. anyone else read any of this?

Way over the top. I was at the Cleveland game in Pittsburgh last year and there were people with Browns jerseys a few rows down. A few good natured. "You're gonna lose buddy!" comments and that's it. No one bothered them at all.

I have went to abt 10 games in Three Rivers. Never saw a fan of the other team treated bad. Then later I was talking to a man and his wife Jacksonville Fans. Told them to hit the Red Bull for a great steak. After the refs robbed us that game the lady emailed me and thanked me for the tip on where to eat. She also said everyone at the stadium was very nice to them. I did one time see a Browns Fan crawling on the ground after a game. Was going to help him up. stick him in a cab to his hotel or whatever I could do. Guy starts cussing me out and tried to swing on me. I dropped his ass back on the ground and left him there.

every stadium has a few looneytunes, but I've never seen too many in Pittsburgh treating any other teams fans badly. yea the usual ribbing, but all in fun.

now Miami, that was a different story in the early 80's. there were fights in our sections every week. one guy swung at a male cop and the cop ducked and the guy hit his female partner that was behind him right in the face. I'm telling you cops came from everywhere. I swear a couple of seats opened up and cops came out of hidden voids in the stadium. the last I saw they were dragging the guy down one of the ramps and the billy clubs were drawn. the dumb bastard probably didn't make it out of there that day. ya didn't mess with the Miami/Dade cops. our section cheered them.

even in Cleveland I have never had trouble. of course I was only there once and sat in the dog pound before it was the dog pound. they all had a flask in their coats. my buddy was a little nervous when I was yelling but, I'm a pretty big boy and we had no trouble. heck they were all too drunk to fight. LOL it was aweful cold too.:lolol::cool:

I know we are all looking for some bright spots after the way this season has gone but lets be real. The guy is a rookie playing special teams that took out a punter. I hardly thinks this equates to stud, he has a long way to go but I would like to see them try him out in one of the safety spots. Who what that big safety Cinci had a many years ago, I think his name was Fuller? I think Garvin could lay the wood to people if he's fast enough.

The tackling is not an issue (so long his paycheque holds out that long...), but it's the reading of the game and on the fly adjustments that will determine his success. I haven't really seen enough of him to know if he's got the potential for that at this level.

I wouldn't think that Heinz would be bad, as it seemed full of KNOWLEDGEABLE fans. Now, if you want to get your wallet, or purse, or life taken from you, be a Raiders fan in Qualcomm or a Charger fan in Oakland! When the Raiders come here to S.D. the bail bondsmen have special commercials for the Raider fans!

Obviously you didn't read the article. Lebeau and Tomlin are both impressed with him. He is playing a position he has never played before and is getting defensive snaps already. Don't let him going undrafted fool you he went undrafted as a safety.

he's played more then most realize this year. they have been filtering him in a few plays during the season. speed is becoming more of a need than a thumper in the NFL with all the passing going on. if troy can hang in that LB spot, garvin is plenty big enough for what they want him to do. he's 220+ and they will add some nfl thickness to him. foote has been playing around 225 for a couple of years now. he's also some reassurance if spence can't make the comeback. he also allows us to finally get rid of foote and his mil and a half savings next year and finally rid of sly.

I was in Baltimore watching the Steelers,
A Steeler fan all ginned up, got obnoxious
and the police removed him quickly.
They wasted no time removing him.
With the recent episodes of behavior
at NFL stadiums, I look for a big change
in how the NFL will operate their security
at sights. I have been fortunate to attend games
in all our AFC north division, Cleveland is by far
the worst, those people are animals.

I was really surprised when coming out of pre-season we kept Garvin over Rolle & McFadden. Garvin caught the coaches eye early on and they didn't play him a lot during pre-season and I was thinking he could have been stashed on the PS. In fact he's getting enough snaps he quickly is losing his PS eligibility.

To answer your question I personally don't think he'll become a stud. He's way too slow as a safety in this league. In fact he's a bit slow as an ILBer. He ran a 4.69 40 at his pro-day. He was a bit weak too with only 18 reps on the bench.

With his limited physical skills the odds are against him....BUT... he has the frame to add size and strength and has added 15 LBs already this season. He made a lot of plays in OTAs/training camp which more than anything shows instinct or a nose for the ball. Football smarts/instinct/ nose for the ball/aggressiveness and hardwork/heart can not only separate great players from good players but also cannot be easily gauged.

Odds are he'll be just another role player/backup or maybe he might crack the line-up. James Harrison proves anything is possible so let's how he progresses.

Then I will vote yes, just to be different. The coaches like him, so he has some intangibles to compensate for speed. To see playing time, in a new position, speaks highly of him. I wonder how much he has seen the field compares to drafted players in the past like Troy P, or Timmons, etc.
