The Jets are officially out of the race for the AFC’s second and final wildcard spot.
Baltimore’s 18-16 win Monday night at Detroit -- on Justin Tucker's 61-yard field goal with 43 seconds remaining -- improved the Ravens to 8-6.
Tucker's kick also mathematically eliminated the Jets from playoff contention. So, too, did the fact that the Jets have lost four of five games – to Buffalo, Baltimore, Miami and Carolina – since entering their bye week at 5-4.
The Jets’ playoff odds were already slim. After their loss Sunday at Carolina, which dropped them to 6-8, they needed many things to happen in order for them to reach the postseason.

OK steel d, since the jets were eliminated last night, I think the steelers were as well since the dolphins hold the tie breaker, but maybe you have a new scenario like the NFL awarding an honorary at large 7 seed to pit so you can watch them in the playoffs....;)

no the jets are eliminated because they lose the tiebraker vs balt , but if they win out (just for pride ) and miami lose out they will eliminate miami (the only our problem , than come the other tiebraker were we will be in vs the other teams

Don't have to worry about the jets, they are busy packing up their lockers, probably just want to make off season plans right now, and rex ryan will be busy looking for a new job, even in a 3 way 8-8 tie between the rats, pitt and Miami pitt is out...

I don't get what your problem is? Until the Steelers are officially eliminated what is wrong with fans hoping they somehow make the playoffs? Aren't we supposed to root for our team?

You got a problem with fans who deal in reality rather than hope and fantasy....

I'm not sure I understand why some think those things have to be separated. You can do both. While I know it's very unlikely for the Steelers to somehow make it into the playoffs, I'm still going to be hoping and rooting for it to happen until it is no longer a possibility.

the Jets were eliminated last night, they can't make the playoffs. But they can eliminate Miami. If bioth Miami and NYJ are 8-8, the Jets are the 2nd place AFCE team, and they will figure in the tie with Pgh and/or SD. Which they would lose and Pgh would get in.
But if Miami is 2nd place AFCE team, the Steelers are out.

Is it a fantasy that the Steelers are not eliminated from a playoff spot or reality?

One and done? Am I the only one who was frustrated with the fact that we mopped the field with one of the supposed top playoff contenders? The team that played Sunday night could challenge any team in the playoffs.

#6 seeds have shown a good track record in the last 10 years. I would take the opportunity.

I think the fly in the ointment is going to be Baltimore. I just don't see them losing at home to the MASH unit that is the Pats with the playoffs on the line.

No, I'm frustrated about this, too. There have been several glimmers of a great team this year, only to be followed by a mess the following week. It was more than a glimmer Sunday night, but this is awfully late for it to come out.

For now I'm just trying to be satisfied with the beating they gave Cinci (which is hugely satisfying seeing that I'm surrounded by Bengals fans here in Dayton).

Yeah, the odds just get longer and longer, but I was glad they rose up to gave us SOMETHING to root for in week 16.

In addition to the things we NEED to happen....

    Early games:
    Buffalo upset Miami
    Jets beat Cleveland

Both will be tough -- Cleveland has been playing better and what will the Jets do with no mathematical chance anymore? Hopefully, keep their heads in the game. Both of the above games have point spreads less than 3. Another MUST have IMHO is:

Chiefs beat Colts (7 point favorites). Unless Denver loses to Houston (which is probably just as likely as them losing to Oakland in week 17), the Chiefs position at #5 is cemented if they lose and Denver wins and in week 17 they will be dressing the cheerleaders to play the Chargers. If they are still tied with Denver going into week 17, even though Denver should have a cakewalk in week 17, you'd still need to play it out with a bye on the line -- just in case. Those games are currently both scheduled late on week 17.

Would also be nice (but highly unlikely) if the Vikings beat the Bengals thereby guaranteeing a full effort against the Ravens the following week. They should still give a full effort if they are within one game of New England and their games are played at the same time in week 17. If miracles happen in week 16, we still could potentially face the schedulers doing SOMETHING that would put a team in a position to know whether the game means anything to them by kickoff time instead of everyone playing at the same time.

    Late games (need)
Pitt over Green Bay (according to the 'odds' this appears to be the least likely thing to happen, even if Flynn is the QB)
New England over Baltimore (within 1 to 2 points in the odds).

    Things we won't get
A San Diego loss at home against Oakland (but this is exactly what we'll need if the Chiefs lose).

So for the laws of math to survive after week 16, we need 4 things. From a practical standpoint, I believe we need 5 things. For a true miracle, 6 and 7 would be nice. But for one more week of self-delusion, I say.....

GO BILLS, JETS, CHIEFS, STEELERS, PATRIOTS (oops, I just threw up in my mouth a bit on that last one).

Yeah I wish mac. I don't mind a little drama when it comes to the Steelers, but this year has been extra tough. I'll still keep cheering!
