Not surprised, I've said that I doubt he would want to retire under these circumstances, defense underperforming, people questioning if he still has it. He'll be back next season as long as the Steelers want him to. As good as he looks for his age, it's definitely something the Steelers have to consider, the hours these guys put in, very taxing on the health.

I feel bad for Butler, wonder if he stays. Would open the door for Lake though, I'd like to see that but he's pretty raw as a coach, DC would be a big leap.

I was saying the other day that I wonder what happens to Butler if DL comes back. I want Dan Quinn from Seattle in a perfect world but I trust that the Rooney's will do the right thing regardless. Even IF DL retires do you think he would still stick around as like a consultant or something?

I could see something like that, I think he needs to be around football.

I wonder how much Butler cares though... if you love to coach, what's the big deal? He is doing what he loves everyday, and I'm sure he is comfortable staying in Pitt for so long. Or is it EVERY position coaches dream to be a Coordinator or head coach? Butler doesn't strike me as a guy who has head coach aspirations?

I DO think being the STEELERS DC would be a pretty big badge of honor since we've prided ourselves on defense for so long. But as far as what he's thinking I couldn't really say.

I think most people want to advance, no matter what field you work in. He's had a couple of opportunities for DC positions elsewhere but the Steelers talked him out of it both times. That's why people assume that there is an agreement with the brass that he is the DC in waiting here.

I don't know it happened for Tomlin like that. From position coach to DC in MN to HC rather all very fast in terms of how long it usually takes to move up the coaching tree. I will say this I have zero problem with DL coming back my only wish is that instead just trying to coach the young guys up till the light bulb goes on for them in year three or four, maybe they could also be innovator once again and blend some of the talents these young guys have into what they want to do and set fire to the NFL once again.

All the respect for Lebeau, but this defence needs a change, and I personally think its time to see what input Mike Tomlin can put into this D.

We've already jettisoned many veterans and more will be gone this off-season. We need to get a new D coordinator who is going to be around for a while to get these young guys going and who will be with them for years to come. Even if DL comes back in 2014, his years are obviously numbered. As I said, I love what Lebeau has done for the Steelers, but I think the time for change is now.

I don't really think we can go into 2014 with Haley & Lebeau as our coordinators again, and I do believe Haley has bought himself 1 more year.

I've been very critical of DL since his defense has fallen off. Maybe its not his fault because he doesn't have the players to run his scheme. But what I don't understand is why does it take so long to learn it? This scheme was fine when you didn't have free agency and the rookie contracts weren't pre-determined. You just don't have 3 years for players to learn your system. Either you change or condense your system or you fine players smart enough to learn it. I think it is more feasble of the former than the latter.

It wouldn't be a pick surprise if he sticks around. Maybe he will stick around in some type of capacity like up in the booth and let Butler run the show.

I agree with the previous 2 posts by SC_NB and 5859. I've already raised the concern a few times this season that LeBeau's scheme takes too long to learn to be compatible with the current CBA. Under the new CBA continuity of personnel is not going to be what it used to be. Just look at some of our recent defensive players who have started to emerge at just about the time that their contracts are up: Worilds, Heyward, Keenan Lewis, Cortez Allen. Look around the league and you'll see more instances of new DCs coming in and getting immediate results. Look at Rob Ryan in New Orleans. Not only did he come in and change the scheme, he changed the alignment of the front 7 from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and has found a way to have an impactful defense.

LeBeau is one of my all time favorite Steelers. I love what he's done over the years, and he is probably the single person most responsible for championships 5 and 6. However, just like the Steelers have always known when it's time to part with players who are no delivering, they have to be able to do that with coaches too.

I look at it this way, no matter what tomlin feels toward any of his staff we are looking at back to back 8-8 seasons at best. if he wants to keep his job he better start making some changes. I love lebeau. he has been a great coach and the players love him but I believe his unwillingness to change has cost us. teams know this defense now. I am sorry but when you can sit and watch a game with former players and they know the coverages and can tell who is blitzing you have a problem. the offense is not perfect but has been better. the last couple of loses I put on special teams and defense. so in my opinion tomlin has no choice but to fire at least two coaches. I think you ask lebeau not to make any more statements about coming back and ask him to retire so it doesn't look any worse than it will be.

Tomlin had almost 10 years invested in coaching before getting a HC job, 8 as a DB coach and some wr coaching too. The surprise there though is he never held a DC position, pretty big jump from a position coach to a HC, but maybe that happens more then I realize.

Yes he did one year as the Vikings DC in 2006 so he was hired as the DB coach by Tampa in 2001 went to MN in 2006 as a DC and then was interviewed for a HC job with the Steelers and became the HC in 2007 so roughly 6 years from rookie to HC

It's time for Art Rooney II to do to Lebeau what he did to Arians and say he decided to retire err I mean he's fired. The defense is the weak link of the team they have given up 11 plays of 50 yards or more.
