Cowher's and Tomlin's records against over and under .500 teams:

    Cowher:
    vs. >.500: 53-49
    vs. <.500: 77-31

    Tomlin:
    vs. >.500: 23-20
    vs. <.500: 34-11

Tomlin's numbers are a smaller sample size, of course. For better comparison, Cowher's records though his first six seasons:

    vs. >.500: 23-16
    vs. <.500: 31-13

Cowher didn't have a franchise SB winning QB in each year he coached. It's an insult to coach Cowher to draw a comparison among the two.

You can't even wonder how Tomlin would have done with the likes of O'Donnel, Stewart and Maddox as he would not have lasted long enough to coach all of them. Can you imagine...

All the people who dislike Tomlin and want him gone should look around the league's coaching carousel. Especially San Diego. The Chokers change coaches every few years since the merger and have won nothing of consequence. Our Steelers have had 3 coaches since the merger and are 6-2 in the only game that counts. We're only, what, 3 years removed from our 8th SB appearance and so many of you want the coach gone? Jerry Jones says hello!

they both had ben for a few seasons, what are those numbers?

oh, and there's the MT was winning early with cowhers players too. I think it's just hard to compare.

we won with o'donnel, just not the last one.

stewert and Maddox and the other bad qb's during cowhers time were his own doing.

not trying to argue but these are things to consider with what you are saying.

    An added footnote:

The Steelers were 182-72 (.716) at TRS
They are 80-31-1 (.721) at Heinz.

Under Cowher, the Steelers were 56-24 (.700) at TRS.
    Cowher's home record at Heinz: 37-15-1 (.711)

    Tomlin's home record: 43-16 (.729)

As always, great info 12to88.

Since Heinz field opened in 2001, Cowher's winning percentage from 2001 thru 2006 at Heinz Field could possibly answer your question, wouldn't it?

Cowher's winning percentage was actually a little bit higher in the non-Bettis years...but you can call it a draw.

I really think it's apples and oranges, as Cowher had many more transitional years and didn't get a franchise QB until late in his tenure. Meanwhile, Tomlin has only had the luxury of having a franchise QB.

If you want to compare, probably need to include the Ben-only years, which I'm sure Cowher will show a better record. His overall win perentage is 13% better than Tomlin, not sure the +/- .500 breakdown

Well, I will say this. The past decade has been a far different coaching environment than what we'd seen before. Free agency, parity, injuries...all have made for a different NFL. How different? Consider this: Just in the past ten years, three #6 seeds have won the Super Bowl. We have had our first 9-7 Super Bowl champion. Every year, now, about 4-5 new teams make the post-season.

Soon after Cowher took over, free agency came into full fruition. But there's a caveat: For about 6-8 years, salary bonuses did not count against the cap. The Steelers could not keep their players. Meanwhile their competitors in the AFC managed to keep most of their talent (look at the Bills, for instance).

By the same token, you could argue that Cowher had an offensive line and Tomlin doesn't.

Tomlin has a better QB to work with and Cowher had better overall teams to work with. These two are almost a mirror image of each other record wise, even to the point where they started having bad seasons. Actually Cowher had 3 bad seasons in a row, hopefully Tomlin stops at 2 bad seasons.
