I dont think there is any doubt thats what his intention was. Everyone could see it except, apparently, the ref. I think if he wasnt shown laughing (presumably about the incident), this wouldnt seem as bad as it does- at least to me anyway.

Painfully. I could see if his vision of the JT was being blocked by someone and he moved over to get a better view but there was no reason for him to move closer to the field.

I was just coming to post this. It's a good perspective. Does it change your mind one way or the other?

Changes nothing for me. It doesn't show much we haven't already seen. What it does show is him standing straight as a statue with his legs pressed tightly together. It just doesn't seem like a natural way to stand if he was in fact simply trying to watch the play. Who stands like that?

I wish he'd just come out and say he made a stupid mistake and the passion for the game got the better of him for a split second. Apologize and this can then go away.

I think there was intent. I would like to look back and see where he usually positions himself during returns. Is this something that has been missed during other returns because he wasn't positioned right to pull this stupid stunt off?

Looks like he was getting out of the way of the ref sprinting up on his left.
then he just gets confused and steps onto the field.

I bet watching the screen was like looking in a mirror.

I don't think he did it on purpose.
Did he really know that his coverage team would fail?

If so that's more of an issue.

It doesn't change my mind that dwelling on this will add anything constructive to the discussions on how to beat Miami.

This video hasn't changed my mind, which is the fact I believe Tomlin stood there on purpose. This angle probably does prove it a bit more. As I have said before though, I am not outraged that he tried to do this. I really would like to see footage from the time the ball was kicked though. Does he always stand there? Did he just choose to stand there because it was such an important return given the game and given the season? Or did he just move there when he saw Jones break free and decided nit to move? It is very interesting. He and the Steelers will get a fine, but no draft pick will be given up. While this isn't as bad as the Jets situation, I expect the fine to be similar so the league can send a message to the rest of the coaches NOT to do this.

Looks pretty damning to me and I could understand if this is considered proof that it was intentional.

I'm grasping at straws here trying to defend him that:

    1) He side-stepped to "look around" the player in front of him who was in the grey sweatshirt that was also in the white out of bounds line, but eventually moved into the bench area, and
    2) From when he turned and looked to see where Jacoby Jones was, it took all of three full-speed steps (1 1/2 stride) for Jacoby to blast past him. We're talking hundreths of a second here, a short enough span of time that it would plausibly cause Tomlin to be surprised from the point when he realized while watching the jumbotron that he could be in the way and turning his head to look to the point when Jacoby runs past.

Those two faint, desperate attempts to justify his behavior, combined with no previous offenses, is enough for me to still beleive he didn't attempt to influence the play.

However, I now firmly believe that he new exactly where he was in relation to the field, since he stepped the perfect distance to the side to place him exactly one inch off the field of play; probably in his mind, at the moment, he thought was ok. Fine him/penalize him for standing in the white as he shouldn't have been there, but don't discipline him (or the team) for a perceived act of interfereing with the play, which cannot be proven unless he admits it. Should be the difference between a $25,000 fine for Tomlin or a $100k+ fine for him and a forfeiture of a draft pick for the team.

Who me ? lol.. Yup. I think he did it intentionally now where before I was giving him the benefit of the doubt. I know some people think this is terrible . Don't get me wrong its not good and its unsportsman but
I don't think he deserves capital punishment and it's no worse then faking like your going to punch a punt/kick returner lol

The NY Jets situation was an organizational decision to intefere in the game (plus it caused an injury). This is 1 man taking it upon himself to gain an edge for his team. I agree, fine him, but he will not be suspended nor will the Steelers have a draft pick forfeited. Intent cannot be proved here.

Why didn't the referee that had to run into the players flag Tomlin or yell out before the play arrived?

This doesn't change much for me.

I still think it's possible he was looking at the jumbotron and moving to get a better view, or maybe seeing himself in a mirrored way and thought he was stepping off the field...

I don't really know. Whether the intent was to cheat or not I think he'll be punished the same, so I'm not sure it really matters. I expect a stiff fine, and maybe a 1 game suspension. Taking away a pick would be too much in my opinion.

I can't see it being anywhere near that drastic.

The way the media is going on about this new camera angle, you would have thought someone found new footage of a rifle sticking over the picket fence on the grassy knoll in Dealy Plaza. IMO, this situation has been hilariously overblown. Then again, any story involving coaches and higher ups within the organization usually are.

I agree, this has been overblown. Had he not moved at all, it wouldn't even be mentioned. His smirk proves nothing. He knew he was wrong, is there a different smirk for "he knew he was intentionally wrong? versus "he knew he was wrong"? If anything, if you are trying to be intentional, you put on your game face and act surprised by the whole thing (the whole, everybody is innocent in jail routine).
