after watching the game against the Ravens, I'm realizing that DBs are top priority in the 2014 draft. I hope we pick up 3 DBs in the first 5 rounds. I remember the 49ers got Ronnie Lott, Eric Wright, and Carlton Williamson back in 1982. that was an awesome draft. I thin we did pretty good in the 1987 draft with Rod woodson, Delton hall and Thomas Everett in the first 4 rounds. we need another one in 2014.

Too bad Terry Hawthorne was a wasted 5th round pick last year.
Maybe he's all healed up, and they'll invite him back ??

I do agree we need DBs because of our thirtysomething bunch, if a stud left tackle falls to us we have to take him over a stud DB. ben has taken so much abuse it's not even funny anymore.

It will take a few drafts to fill all our holes but we definitely need to pay attention to free agents.

With the combo of Tomlin/Colbert we got doing our drafting, "a few drafts" is likely being overly optimistic. Wait till this year's mass cap exodus hits us and until we get our over-priced defensive players finally off the books.

Been saying this for years. Then they let Lewis go after developing him. True the fact that there was no money to sign him. But the spin was that the brass felt that Cortez Allen was a better corner. Spin Doctors. No money. Toast needs to take a pay cut or be shown the door. LeBeau just can't let old vets go and he loves Toast. He has lost major steps and it's time to get younger. Let's see him go to another team and get buried on the depth chart.

Shamarko will take a spot, I believe SS which leaves the FS position open. Will Allen can take it and has played well. Which leaves the question, should Troy take a pay cut of be released? I believe he will take a cut. When he is on, it's on, but when he is not he disappears.

Gay has been a major surprise.

There was no spin at work. Lewis didn't want to play for any team but the New Orleans Saints. Lewis took a lot less money to play with the Saints. Lewis said so himself.

It's not that the organization can't let old vets go. It's difficult to find adequate replacements for some of the top end starters this team has/had. The Steelers could draft a CB in the top 10-15. That CB may not develop to be as good as Taylor.

will allen isn't the answer. he's just a tool added to what we have. he's not a playmaker he's another role player. these days of trying to build a defense around troy has run it's course. bringing in a playmaker and retarding him to a role so we can make troy the focus of the defense really takes away what said playmaker can do for you. everyone has their role so troy can do what troy does. well troy can't do what troy used to do. the role players that know where to be so troy can be troy limit the defenses ability to make plays. it creates weaknesses somewhere on the defense and teams have found them.

I honestly believe with the performance of Beachum this season, LT has become less of a priority. It's also way too early to give up on Adams. We've got to draft an elite CB who has the ability to create turnovers. Ike has never been a playmaker and has always had poor ball skills, now he seems to losing his coverage skills as well. Allen has regressed and while Gay has had a nice season, he's a filler guy and not elite by anyone's standards. He's made some nice plays this year but still gets toasted on occasion. CB is a very high priority, maybe even more so than LT.

I disagree Beachum is not the longterm answer at LT they need to find a stud in the draft. Adams may have a future but it's not at LT maybe he can play RT.

If you've got the top CB in the draft and the top LT in the draft sitting there and both grade out comparably, who do you draft?

I'd go with best pass rushing DE or OLB instead. You only need elite corners if you generate no pass rush, which we don't anymore. If there was Casey Hampton-type player, I would look at them too.

I'd take linemen and corners later in the draft, mainly because they will more than likely get injured anyways and we need quantity over quality. I would rather have three Beachums over one (insert some "Stud" left tackle form previous drafts). Same with corner.

Well said. While I'm all for drafting DBs high (rather than the mid to late round picks we've been getting by with for the last decade), their learning curve is as steep as any. The problem is people expecting 'immediate impact' as a norm from the draft, when really you're looking at what, 2%, 3% of the total players picked actually becoming an impact player in their first season.

the elite QB's are getting rid of the ball within 2secs, you need the secondary to buy time for the pass rush, it doesn't matter if you have the greatest LB core when the QB is getting rid of the ball within 2secs. we need DB's And corners now!! even if we do get a stud LT in the draft Ben will still hold onto the ball for too long and will get sacked, if he truly buys into Haleys system he can survive with the quick short passes. The short passing game will back up the rush, the same way it backs our guys up, then Ben would have time to throw the bomb.
