The Steelers placed center Fernando Velasco on the team’s Reserve/Injured List due to an achilles injury and released cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke.

The Steelers signed Velasco on September 9, 2013, when center Maurkice Pouncey was placed on the team’s Reserve/Injured List. Velasco started 11 games before suffering the injury late in the fourth quarter of the Steelers’ Week 13 game at Baltimore. He originally signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 2, 2008.

Van Dyke was signed on November 5, 2013. Earlier this season, he was placed on the team’s Waived/Injured List on August 25. Van Dyke was originally drafted by the Raiders in the third round (87th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.

To fill the roster spots, the Steelers signed offensive tackle Rashad Butler and center Eric Olsen.

Butler (6-4, 310) has played in 50 games with four career starts. He was released by the Cleveland Browns on November 5, 2013. He spent time with the Houston Texans from 2007-11. He was originally drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the third round (89th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft.

Olsen (6-3, 305) has played in 17 games with four starts. He was released by the New Orleans Saints on September 9, 2013. Olsen originally was drafted in the sixth round (183rd overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft.

So, it looks like Adams, Foster, Wallace, DeCastro and Gilbert will be our starting line against the Dolphins.

But you can't think they would let Adams play left tackle. He's garbage. They could flip Gilbert over there or go with Whimper but none of the options are good.

Any free agent tackle with experience would be an upgrade over Adams. That guy is indeed a bust.

Hard to say for him not knowing the exact injury details (tear or rupture etc) and the remedy (is surgery required?) Typically, 6 months or more for a surgically repaired torn achilles.

Assuming he recovers normally, I think this makes signing him easier.

The injury is very unfortunate but it might make it easier for us to resign him.

Look at who we have on injured reserve, Pouncey, Velesco and Levi Brown. If Brown can live up to his draft status and Velesco comes back healthy and we resign him, we could have a pretty decent line next year.

Beachum, Velesco, Pouncey, DeCastro and Gilbert

Levi Brown, Foster, Adams:facepalm: and Whimper as reserves.

No, he's on IR. He's not under contract next year, though.

Can you guys see letting Pouncey go instead of him if it's a matter of cap? Would we owe Pouncey a big fat sum if he were to be released?

No need, just get Gilbert and DeCastro to do some work with Woodley ... more than one way to skin a fat contract. :lolol:
