    Injury update
The Steelers potentially could be without three starters on defense Thursday night against the Ravens. Nose tackle Steve McLendon, who sprained an ankle against the Browns, will not play.

Woodley, who has a calf injury, and defensive end Brett Keisel, who has a foot injury, could miss their third consecutive game.

What is up with all of these soft tissue injuries with Woodley? Last year, it was the incessant injuries to the hamstrings. This year, he's missing significant time with the calves. What is going on? I know last year there was discussion about whether or not hammies and calves could mean that a player was just out of shape, but I don't know. Could it be genetic?

Some players seem to be ironmen and rarely miss time and others seem to miss significant time every season. We can't afford to pay a healthy sum to an unhealthy linebacker who misses 25% to 50% of the season every year. Re-sign Worilds ASAP!!!

    Thoughts?

Jack - I hear you. I cringed the day we signed Woodley to the big contract. Not because I think he stinks, but from a value standpoint it just doesn't add up. Woodley to me has always been a one trick pony, good bullrusher - but little else. Not really great against the run. And as you pointed out, oh the injuries.

Problem is Woodley is close to a $14M hit against the cap next year. So there is no way Woodley is going anywhere. Also keep in mind a couple things about Worilds. He has played a couple of great games, but generally the guy has been a bit of a disappointment throughout his career too and he has had some injury bug things as well. Maybe being on the left side was his true calling and it was missed by the coaching staff. Worilds is in debut-mode right now for a new uniform next year because it won't be Pittsburgh.

Yep, I know the cap issue is HUGE and will probably preclude us from being able to re-sign Worilds, which is a shame. I guess we might as well get accustomed to Woodley missing his normal 4-8 games and being paid a king's ransom for it. The thing that most concerns me is that, even when Woodley was supposedly healthy this year, he had stretches, entire games even, where he just disappeared. We're between a rock and a hard place with this situation.

What exactly would be the cap hit (in dead money) if we just cut Woodley outright? And it might be a good idea to try to trade him, even if it is for almost nothing. I realize we wouldn't get that good of a return based on his contract, but maybe there is a team out there that thinks he's worth a 5th/6th round pick. Unfortunately, I think that is the only way that we are able to have enough money to keep Worilds.

The steelers should get a hypnotist and hypnotism him and tell him when he hears the word THE he is instantly compelled to retire.

That would screw us. Retiring would accelerate all his guaranteed signing bonus money.

Ouch. I guess I could've looked that up myself haha Dead money (if cut) after next season would be 8.5mil, and 3mil if cut after 2016. Looks like we've got him thru 2016 whether we want him or not...

Worilds has looked good since moving to the left side. not sure what side he played on in college, but he usually filled in for Harrison when he wasnt playing and he is just much better on the left.

trouble is we still have 4.2 mil. in dead money of colon's gonna be on the books or they could have designated him an after june1 cut, but colon's money hurts that. after next year however, we very well could get by with cutting Woodley.

maybe a draft pick is in order to learn next year, then take over in 2015. Jarvis will have 2 under his belt by then going into that 3rd year where it all seems to come together for guys.

worilds may just keep getting harder to re-sign if he keeps it up. carter may be a guy that they will have to make a call on. he'll be costing over 600,000 next year, that we could use, but leave us without a backup at OLB. it will be interesting.

He played DE on the left side in college. He's much more comfortable and effective playing LOLB.

    yep
    Woodley sucks

    the only choice is
the fans boo his ass if he doesn't produce or at training cmp next year cuss his buttocks out if he does not restructure for our team

Restructuring is only a temporary fix, it will just push off money to another year. Extension with a pay cut is probably the only way to fix it and I don't know if that would do it. And to be fair, why would Woodley take a pay cut?

Yeah he's not taking a pay cut. He has the Steelers over a barrel and Im sure he's aware of it. I heard a few minutes of local sports talk radio today and they thought that Worlids is out of here at the end of the year because its too expensive to do anything with Woodley. It's just ****ty luck. The guy has showed little to deserve a contract until just recently. And its too late. They lamented that if he would have produced sooner...like last season...that they could have passed on Jones and picked up Tyler Eifert instead.

    if he doesn't

then go dump trash in his yard

    bottom line
he is fragile and has not performed up to the STANDARDS of our standards , but I do know Tomlin has a soft spot for him
I'm sure Mike will have a sitdown with him and lay it on the line

Woodley's either with us or against us
that stuff holds a lot of weight

I ask anyone that thinks Woodley should take a paycut because he's been hurt this: If you got hurt a few times at work missed some time and collected workman's comp, Would you take a paycut?

    to our standards?
    are you serious?
he's the weakest link in the entire defense.

people complain about Jarvis running himself out of the play, well, Woodley does that way more than THE ROOKIE
    we'll see
Woodley can't stay up long enough to perform and his stamina is subpar

Maybe a change in sides will do wood good. The question is if worilds keeps this up and wood does good on the left did what do we do with jones maybe see if he can play inside.

When healthy he's been good. I'm sick of him not being on the field too, but what can the guy do if he's hurt? From all accounts he did the work in the offseason and came to camp in shape.
Kinda off topic, but I got hit in the side of my shin/calf with a baseball in the spring and it torn my calf muscle, it's mostly healed now , but still can feel it if I push it when I run. Point is sometimes injuries have less to do with preparation and more to do with bad luck, (Pouncey) it's frustrating for the fans, but just part of Sports.
