I agree with others who mentioned it`s great to see him "sit in the pocket" and pick a defense apart.
The main problem with that tho, is how rarely he HAS a clean pocket to sit in.
Fortunately, he has generally been very good at "ad-libbing" when he has to bail outta the place where the pocket should be.
Lately he`s not been as good at it as in the past, but that may just be the law of averages catching up to him.
And some of it no doubt is due to age. As long he holds onto the ball when he is forced to take a sack, and he doesn` just recklessly throw the ball up for grabs, when escaping the sack, he can continue to lead us to plenty of victories!
It would be nice, tho, to see him afforded a clean pocket 80% of the time.
He`d last longer, and we would definitely put more points on the board.
    GO STEELERS!

i never understand why coaches insist on trying to make qbs play in ways that dont suite there abilities.

Ben is at his best in the no huddle and when hes just doing his thing.

i remember when Kevin Gilbride was hired to be the Steelers OC and immediately tried to change Kordell from being one of the most explosive qbs in the game to being a pocket passer.

Ben has the tools to succeed, the team does not go to 3 superbowls without him. Over the last few years, the team hasn't always complimented him. To win superbowls, it takes a whole team. Just ask Marino. While his interceptions are high this year, the rest of his numbers (completion percentage, yards per attempt, TD's, rating) are similar to his career stats. All QB's throw pics. Many who don't, have reduced numbers because they don't take risks. With risks come rewards. See Jason Campbell, he doesn't throw many picks, but doesn't win many games.

Forget where Ben ranks buthow he played. The consistency aspect of Ben's play just wasn't at a highenough level to elevate the scoring offense or carry the team from week toweek. Ben never helped this team make the playoffs without a top 5 ppg defense.
Running more no huddle isn't necessarily goingto automatically mean more scoring success. There were reasons why thecoaches choose not to run more no huddle in the past. One reason was theinjury situation on the Oline. Another reason is that the more theoffense chooses to run the no huddle/hurry offense the more opportunitiesdefenses will have to pick up the plays, tendencies, verbage, signals, ect.from the offense.

What will they turn to when the nohuddle/hurry offense stalls? Whether they run the regular offense, nohuddle offense, or hurry up offense it's going to hinge on the play of the QB.
As I stated, we've witnessed this type of play out of Ben before. We'll see what happens going forward.

I suppose the coaches wanted to keep Ben healthy. Ben doing things his way lead to inconsistent scoring offense and got him injured in the past.

The coaching wasn't the problem for Kordell. Maintaining consistent play was the issue.

Trying to change a guys game which is based on mobility into a pocket passer is completely on the coach.

Yep. We see the same being done with RG3 this year. Coaches have the right motivation in trying to keep their QBs healthy, but what they accomplish many times is utilizing a player's weaknesses and not his strengths.

I thought one of the best things for Kordell was going to be after he got benched in favor of " don't remember who" and they went to play the Bills during Flutie's resurgence, just to see what a smaller athletic QB could do and then go to Cohwer and the coaching staff and say let me be more like Doug, let me create out there. Unfortunately they did try to force him into being a pocket passer.

Was Kordell's game based on mobility or was it based on his ability to pass? I'd agree with you if Kordell didn't show the ability to be a pocket passer. Kordell played QB because his of his ability to pass the football. Running the ball was an added dimension that Kordell brought to the table. Kordell could always run but he couldn't always pass.

The coaches gave Kordell the opportunity to play QB because he showed the ability to pass the ball. The coaches needed to see how far he could develop as a pocket passer. The coaches knew that Kordell couldn't maintain success as a QB unless he became a better pocket passer. Kordell showed that he couldn't maintain the consistency necessary as a pocket passer to remain a starting QB in the league. It's not like the coaches ruined Kordell by attempting make him a better pocket passer. At some point, either a player has it or he doesn't.
