Wow...sounds like he may be nervous about being dealt and doesn't want to leave, maybe since he married a PA girl.

    1. He very likely does want to remain a Steeler until he retires. I have little doubt in that.
    2. What players say in the media about their contract is almost always very different than what they say to their agent
    3. Ben isn't going to retire if he gets traded, despite what he says. Pro athletes almost never walk away from the game like that, especially someone as driven as Ben.

That's not hate at all either, just the reality of the situation. His agent is going to ask for a ton of money because that's the way pro sports are these days. Hometown discounts are almost unheard of when it comes to star players.

Didn't Brady just take a pay cut?

Yep. Didn't Brees, Romo, Flacco, etc. just milk their teams for every last penny possible? Ben may very well give the Steelers a discount, but it's a pretty rare thing to do among stars in pro sports.

I have to disagree that it is rare for stars to do so. Also I'd say its less rare for a player to do so to stay in Pittsburgh.

Brady ended up getting more guaranteed cash out of that deal when it was all said and done. The media painted him as an altruistic team savior, but it wasn't really that way...

Times have changed. You can't compare what players do today with what players did even 10 years ago. Sports have turned into players squeezing every last possibly penny out of the owners and the owners squeezing every last possible penny out of the fans.

He'll remain a Steeler, if the Rooneys want him that is but if it's up to Ben, he'll work out a contract with them. That seems pretty clear to me, he has nothing to gain by going to these lengths at trying to convince people he wishes to stay, it's counter productive in fact.

I like to hear this news just as much as the rest of you, but the original Trib Live Article that the CBS article was "loosely based on" never mentioned the word "concessions"; you will also notice that the word concessions is not part of any quote in the CBS article.
Here is the original Trib Live Article ...

    Again, the CBS Article ...

Dang! Why would they allow Ben to make concessions?! He's clearly a franchise qb and I bet you wouldn't see Rodgers or Brady or Manning or Brees making concessions. I mean can you imagine how many people will walk up and say "I'll take a Roethlis-BURGER"! Ooooooh!!! Get it??? Get it you guys??? See how I used the word "concessions" differently than it was intended??? That is why it had such a comedic effect upon your guys minds. You are all welcome btw. As far as the ORIGINAL (and much more bland context of the word) I'm really not that surprised. I wouldn't blame Ben if he didn't want to but I think he's the ultimate team guy. I mean if he hasn't snapped and went all "Incognito" (notice again how I cleverly play upon a word) on the "offensive" (ad nauseum play on words) line then I think all the "Ben is a really bad teammate" reports are kinda baseless in reality. I think Ben truly loves the Steelers and he is the actual prototype of what a "Steeler" should be for me and I think to see him in ANY other uniform would just be a grave injustice.

Brady has actually taken multiple pay cuts through the years. Brady has also been more critical of his mgmt than Ben has as well. Maybe he feels like he can be because he's taken cuts before. Apparently he was irritated when Branch was first let go and apparently he wasn't happy that Welker was let go. There were reports that Tom Kraft said "I don't work for Tom Brady" after it was reported that Brady was "furious" over Welker being let go. I've heard people in the Manning Cult around here say that he has also taken a pay cut but I'm not sure if that's true or not. I know Brady has but as most here know I have a self professed man crush upon him and I follow his career rather closely from a distance.

This is the truth. Most players don't get a first big pay day... so if they do, they're looking to get PAID. This is just a "me first" generation, and most guys only care about how their contract stacks up against guys they compete against. Hometown discounts are VERY rare.

Of course there are exceptions to this (most of whom are vets). Some guys take less to play on a contender/home city... and some have made so much money that they really aren't worried about their contract anymore (Brady). Ben could be that guy too. He also could try for 20 million, who knows? He won't make a circus out of it one way or the other. The Steelers in all likelihood will offer him a reasonable extension, and he will probably take it. Just my two cents.

I initially misread the title as "Ben could get concussion on current contract."

One would think they would've had to. Great players that want to win will take the discount so talent can be placed around them. In no way shape or form do I think Ben plans to "squeeze" every penny out of the Steelers to the point where they can't pay anyone else. Ben is a competitor and wants to win. Again this may just be me being blinded by my black and yellow glasses, but I can make a nice list of players who in recent years took a "discount" to stay in or come to Pittsburgh. There are a number of them on the Penguins and Pirates along with the guys who have done it in the past for the Steelers.

I will wait until it's time for him to sign his contract extention before I believe he will take a "hometown discount". Players say one thing in the media and then when its time to execute changes their stance. I hope he does so we can continue to build this team and retain other players but I'll take a wait and see approach.

I mentioned in another thread that Giselle's net worth is far greater that Tommy Boy's. Not a true comparison as the Brady clan is loaded!!

I could see Ben MANNING a stand and RIVERS of people asking for him to BRADY tuck a wienie in a bun.
that job would be a Brees. Just something to Ponder. all that and a bag of chips. Does he provide condim mints.
    that's all I could mustard up.
Ben has reworked his contract twice I believe it's time for others to do it so we can keep him.

And that's the reason for the mediocre teams out there. 5-9 Players make almost all the money and the front offices have to piece the rest of the team together.
