That season with the Lion is not the norm. the offense (starters) did not perform well at all during the preseason and it continued during the first 4 games of the regular season and now just starting to perform.

Maybe the starters should of played more in the preseason since they were so out of sync.

I also wonder during that Lions preseason,
how well did the offense perform? did they go 4-0 because of the defense and special teams? Did they just squeak by with those wins?

Winning cures all. Winning mentality is like a contagious virus. I would of been pissed the way we performed during the preseason as a player and not nonchalantly blowing it off thinking you can turn it on during the regular season.

Detroit is an extreme example but there are dozens of examples of teams that do well in preseason and have bad seasons and teams that do bad in preseason and do well in regular season.

You never know who anyone really is until about 4 games into the season, regardless of what happens in preseason.

The preseason is meaningless when it comes to wins and losses for the most part. You can tell more just by how your starting units play in the preseason. With that said I think everyone knew we weren't where we needed to be.

    3. Hire a "Tendencies Coach" to study, identify, and assist in help changing both our offensive and defensive tendencies that opposing teams may be keying on.

Honestly after yesterday trade people that have value this off-season and start rebuilding through the draft. Use the Patriots as an example. Start stock piling draft picks and cap room. Personally everyone is available to be traded, if we can get enough value for them. Go into full rebuild mode.

The Patriot model is a tough one to buy into for me. They haven't won a SB in nearly a decade, despite having arguably the best QB during this time. Their model of accumulating draft picks was to put a winning product on the field each year, to build a fanbase and earn more money for their owner. They probably thought TB would have won them a couple more SB based on his ability alone. If they wanted to build to win now, they would have a couple more SB (thank you Eli!!) and then some tough years (like us). Which would you prefer?

For me, I'd take the SB trade-off. Take it from me who is also an Atlanta Braves fan who had only 1 WS win despite winning 14 straight Division titles.

This is why that GB loss still haunts me...if we had only gotten that 3rd ring...

Those duties already exist under quality control coaches and their scouts.

Personally, I think NE has an interesting approach. Belichek and the organization continually looks to turn over personnel with players that they know are a diamond in the rough that fits something they like to do (think Danny Woodhead) or adaptable and smart enough to adapt to different things on the field (think Rob Ninkovich who is one of those tweener guys at DE, but kind of like a LB). It also allows them to survive in the salary cap era where a large pot of money has to go to the franchise QB. At times they let go of guys who are still pretty good (think Welker and Assante Samuel), but they often manage to do okay with their replacements probably because their scouting team is identifying the draft picks and free agents that might fit the bill of what they need. It also allows them the flexibility to find those 2-3 free agents each year who they think can make a difference (think Aqib Talib). I wouldn’t be surprised if their front office is charting free agents that may be on the market 2-3 years out, not just one year out.

Also – the point is to be in the hunt, anybody who coaches football or any sport knows that just getting to the playoffs with enough health each year in itself is a small miracle. The Patriots are a miracle catch by Tyree from probably being the only 19-0 team in the history of the NFL. They are in the playoffs every year and let’s face it they are again a SB threat – they aren’t most people’s pick to win it, but would anyone really be shocked if they did?

I respect the Steelers approach towards using the draft to build the team – that is the foundation of most good franchises. But the day, the Steelers signed Roethlisberger as their franchise QB was the day they needed to re-think some of their approach towards how they were going to manage players with the cap....it was okay for awhile, but it appears that they are now looking pretty bare.

I would expect this is the last ride for many Steelers veterans. Better enjoy it over the next 8 games.

Build around Anotnio Brown on offence and Lawrence Timmons on Defence.

Are you implying you think Ben might be gone too? .... i.e. don't build around Ben?

Not at all. I was just focusing on the somewhat younger players. Although as I mentioned in another thread, for the betterment of the Steelers, don't be surprised if Colbert fields offers for Ben.

Here's a suggestion to Todd or Tomlin or whoever has input:

As good as Bell does look (and I am highly optimistic on him going forward), I really believe Jonathan Dwyer deserves more touches. He is balling this year. 1 Rush for 20 yards and 1 catch for 23 yards. He is throwing good blocks on special teams too. I would like to get him a little more involved.

Not sure how to say this right, or if it`s even possible, given what contracts are, nowadays, But...
Get back to the days where we had a LOT of really good players, and a DECENT(not "superstar" ) qb...
When we had players sitting on the bench, that would be starting for other teams.
They were just on the bench for us, because the player ahead of them at their position, was a bit better than them, and maybe had a year or two of experience, on them...
I have a feeling, I am living in the past here, because, I don`t know that we could afford to have a "starter", and an "almost starter riding the bench", at most positions, but we used to.
That is how our "building thru the draft" philosophy, worked.
Well, That, and getting most of our picks right, but there is no "science" to that.
Most of our recent "misses" looked like "hits", when we picked `em, so I aint goin there.
I just think we gotta get back to our "blue-collar roots", when Me, and most of our fans viwed the Rooneys as "cheap", because they wouldn`t spend big money on a player, no matter how good they were...
Another team would come in, and take them away with a contract we wouldn`t match, but...
And here is the big "BUT"...
We had pklayers waitng in the wings to take over, for the player that got signed away.
I feel that is what we are missing now.
Maybe it can`t be done in this era, But I think we should get back o our roots, and purge this team of the "mega millionaires"... they are usaually more selfish, than the players that get a decent contract to play the game they love to play, than the "Young money crew"/"Multi million Dollar QB/LB", anyhow... they keep giving more effort...
    And not for the dollars.
    Unlikeley nowadays? Probably.
But I`m sure there is talent out there, that can compete harder, for less money, than what MOST NFL teams have on their rosters right now...
How do ya find `em, is the question.
(And keep em from gettin greedy, when they see what their peers are making? Ya can`t, so you have what happened to us...
We spent to keep premium talent, that we didn`t used to, and we got spoiled "showboats"... and a 2-6 record...
    Just my theory... Peace.
    GO STEELERS!

I'm not so sure about Mr. Brown who doesn't make the catch when the game is on the line, but will make every other catch and look like a fool when he gets a first down. I think we need to find someone who is more dependable.

And Mr. Timmons. He is defended by all his tackles, but a ILB in his position in a 3-4 should have a lot of tackles. Farrior was the star, and we need to find another.

    Overhaul the offensive line
    Overhaul the defensive line
Clear out some other "deadwood" veterans
Replace the coordinators and some other assistants
Look at some front office changes
Bring in the QB of the future this year or next
Put Tomlin on a very short leash

That's going to take some time to accomplish

Find Matt Foley the motivational speaker and listen to him intently. I think this would make a huge difference.

Well said DC, there aren't too many (NON PLAYOFF) years up in NE. Yet we have a so called elite QB?Do you people really think that we are close to being
a playoff competitive team? We are many players away from being competitive.Do you see any
IMPACT players on our roster. Yes you can say Timmons but he doesn't seem to want to show up each and every game.
