Larry Foote was a whipping boy when he first started and for a long time.

I know, fans were ripping him and the coaches, doesn't seem like such a liability to me. I believe they are serving crow in the cafeteria today.

Gay has been playing much better since his return. But you got to admit that he was bad during his previous time here. Saw him get beat many times and what's odd is many times they were at crucial times such as the Super Bowl in Dallas, he was getting beat on everything thrown his way and we could't get ahead because of his poor play.

Gay got terribly burned many times early in his career in one on one coverage. He could have a decent game but often gave up crucial TD's or first downs by playing DL's 10 yard cushions and back pedaling 5 yards on 3rd and 8's. It was frustrating back then and mostly still is today but he has made large improvements to his coverage. His last season before we let him go was arguably his best season in Pittsburgh but fans were already frustrated with him. When the Steelers called him back I had a buddy call me up mad as can be and I actually found myself defending William.

Honestly, and this may seem petty but oh' well. My biggest problem with him was when he did that stupid rap crap in the SB parade that made him look like a moron because he was the only player (actually person) in the city of Pittsburgh wearing Cardinal Red. Sure, it was in honor of Louisville but he was all about trying to get recognized by some Rap label but if you are going to do it then you better be one of the best ever to play the position otherwise you look like a fool.

Yeah but what everyone was ignoring is that he played well under Lake his last season here. This is what I totally expected of Gay this season.

Yep, and as that article points out, they are ranked 4th in pass defense and have allowed only 5 passing TD's, best in the league. Gay and the rest must be doing something right back there.

Yup I would agree with you JAD. He is terribly inconsistent sometimes. I just hope he can continue to play lights out . Maybe the coaching is finally making an impact on his play

Yes freak very true. This is why I love it so much. The QBs are picking on him but he has elevated his game so he is having the last laugh.

For me, "getting burned" and "allowing receptions" are two different things.

I don't remember Gay getting burned a lot - i.e. the receiver just running right past him and outspeeding him - because Gay has always played the cushion. His game has always been to make sure of the tackle, and preventing YAC, rather than breaking up the catch. What I'm seeing this year is him getting in front of the receiver more to break up the catch, and not simply preventing any YAC.

"Coach Mike [Tomlin] says often that your tape is your resume and he had good tape when he was here and good tape when he was in Arizona," Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau said. "We knew he was a good man. We had lost a corner and he definitely fit us. I was glad Mike brought him back."

Interesting article; I wonder who else we have Tomlin to thank for bringing here?

I will admit he has looked solid the last 3 Games,he has learned how to play the position finally...I will no longer Bash him if he continues to play well esp. if against better WR'S...

He caught a huge break in the Jets game IMO,with no Holmes and No TE...Our D caught a break as well...Teams that torch our D are teams with 2 good WR'S and a strong TE,we are fortunate Teams have not been able to keep those key positions healthy or keep them on the field...

If Flacco didn't under throw Jones this discussion would be quite different. I will admit he has played better this year but he still has issues in man to man coverage, and I think the bad part with him was he always seemed to give up the one play you needed him to stop. I will eat crow with a smile as long as Gay is making plays and I hope he has a big day tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just glad he doesn't stand there with cement shoes, playing yards off the LOS, allows the catch and then gets juked.

He is playing decent right now. Lets hope it continues.

Cortez Allen where are you? Some said you were going to be better then Keenan Lewis...

In all fairness that play was about 9 seconds long and Gay did a very good job of getting back and swatting the ball away. It's hard to ask CB's to cover man to man for that long.

Gay wasn't very good the first year he had the opportunity to be the number 2 CB. Gay was generally a solid nickle back for the Steelers. It's only going to take one bad game for the I told ya so people to be down on Gay again.
