Big Ben came in at #4. Michael Vick topped the list. Pretty sure Manti Teo was something like 2 or 3.

Just goes to show that you are always presumed guilty in the public opinion. I still think Ben's transgressions are something that tips him staying out of the Hall of Fame. Supposedly, that isn't supposed to be part of the criteria - but it doesn't mean it isn't in the back of people's minds.

If Lawrence Taylor can get in, anyone can get in!! Not saying LT wasn't a beast on the field, but he was a colossal douche off the field with his multiple drug busts and underage prostitutes.!!

But didn't a lot of this crop up after he was out of football for awhile. For example, the prostitute thing was only recently after he had been in the HOF for 10+ years. Also Ben is a QB who is a solid candidate for HOF inclusion....Lawrence Taylor is arguably the best LB to ever play the game...i.e he had to be included.

Not to mention Michael Irvin who, singlehandedly, raised the GDP of Peru and Columbia 250%

yes the underage prostitute thing happened well after his playing days were over, but his cocaine arrests and other things were while he was playing. I don't have much respect for the guy off the field. Ben may fall into the same category if you believe he actually did everything he allegedly did. He was never charged or convicted, but I agree it does seem like the same thing continually seems to follow him. I believe the HOF should be based on your skills playing the game and not the character you represent off the field. If character counted , do you really think Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth would be in the Hall?

Understood, but I think drug use vs. sexual assault is viewed differently.

Drugs - guy w/lack of personal control, but if it isn't hurting anybody...live and let live, it's his problem if he screws up his life.

Sexual Assault - guy is a predator, preys on innocent victims.

I know Ben was never charged and I still think deep down Ben is guilty of inappropriate behavior, but I think the women may have been just as guilty of inappropriate behavior as well...but how it is perceived in the court of public opinion can weigh more heavily on acceptance of a player's status than if they were a hard partier who used drugs.

Actually the other day NFL Network did a Top 10 players you love to hate list and Hines was on it. Brett Favre was #1 and Tebow was on there too. Tom Brady was #2 I think. Ben wasn't on that list.

Great points - but Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth are from a different era and were outside of the 24 hour/365 media spotlight. Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens will probably never make the Baseball HOF. I think they should based on stats alone. If you take a look at Bonds' numbers before the steroid use started he was already a 1st ballot HOF. Clemens was a 6 or 7 time Cy Young winner w/most of those occurring well before alleged steroid use. Incidentally, baseball does allow character as a reference point for determining if someone gets in. I have heard sportswriters who vote for the Hall say that Ty Cobb probably would not get in if he were being voted on today with the spotlight these guys are under.

I think you're spot on here.

I think most non-steelers fans didn't follow everything that happened all that closely and just assumed he's some predator. I also think this happening "twice" is not true. The first incident sounded like a totally consensual act with a crazy chick trying to make a buck. Ben came out and immediately and vehemently denied the accusations when it happened, and you could tell he was pissed.

The second time he didn't say squat, and hired a big shot lawyer, and I thought... Oh crap... You read the stuff which many people ignored like her wearing a sticker that says "DTF." This obviously wasn't a born again Christian Ben was hanging around. Was it wrong? Yes. Was it sleazy? Absolutely, but I'm not sure what he did is any worse than what you'll see the "characters" on an episode of jersey shore doing on a regular basis. If Ben was any other college dope, nobody would've even cared.

I'm not excusing what he did. It's gross, and completely inappropriate, but by what I've seen he's matured, and learned from it which is what matters more than the opinion of him from some people that obviously want to hate him for being a Steeler to begin with.

Interesting - was it NFL players who were polled? I think the list I mentioned is from Forbes and is public opinion. I have heard that Brady is disliked by a lot of NFL players.

I was thinking the same thing about that girl in GA. I also think the girl in Nevada was a TOTAL fraud and I don't believe a word from her mouth. If you get raped and take a year to go to the police with this ridiculous porno-esque story about coming to fix the cable that is just so ridiculous you have to dismiss that. I think Ben was out acting like an entitled celebrity and did some stupid things but as far as being a rapist I HIGHLY doubt it. My love for Ben is based on what he does purely on the field. If my Ben wants to play football I would be glad for him to model his play after Ben by being tough and being a good teammate.

"The trouble with quotes on the Internet is that it's difficult to discern whether or not they are genuine."--Abraham Lincoln

That pretty much sums up these polls as well

NFL Network put Ray on their list of Top 10 you love to hate. Hines was the only Steeler though.
