i want to start by saying that i love that guy and hes a HOFer and he has looked like the Troy of old this year, almost.

i think DL needs to stop letting him get up on the line. he makes the occasional big tackle on a rb, but he doesnt get to the qb anymore and when hes rushing it leaves a huge void in the middle of the field and qbs are picking them apart.

he needs to play the safety spot like a true safety and stop playing up tight. its just puts the secondary in a bad position and makes it even tougher for the dbs to do their job.

if he was getting sacks than i would be ok with it, but as it is, he is just taking himself out of the play.

again im not bashing Troy. i just dont think he is capable of doing the things he used to do.

the defense as a whole havent been very good this year and they dont have any play makers as of right now. because of that i dont think they can afford to keep letting Troy play out of position. they just dont have the guys that can make up for him not getting to the qb.

right now they all need to just play sound football and play smart.

I was actually thinking yesterday that they should move him to linebacker.

I like Troy playing up to be honest. Not because he is getting sacks...I just like it because I think it gets into the QB's mind. The offense has no choice but to know where Troy is at all times and its distracting.

What Troy is doing is playing 2 positions, with Foote out and having a rookie at the buck, Troy is trying to help and I'll bet he was asked by DL to help with that position. It also keeps the o-linemen thinking about blocking scheme because we need to face the facts, if we don't get to the QB our current crop of CBs are going to get beat, it happens just about any time the opposing QB has any kind of time.

Did you see him telling Shamarko where to go yesterday? The wiley veteran helping the kid out. Pretty cool.

On many plays, the Steelers were playing nickel with Troy, Clark and Thomas all there. So I don't see that he's hurting the DBs.

the middle of the field was wide open and thats where Flacco was working. if Troy cant get to the qb which he cant he needs to stay home and clog up the middle of the field. when he rushes theres to much open space in the middle for the receivers to work with.

i think it is hurting the secondary. the other guys have to cover for Troy and honestly they are not good enough to do that.

My point was that Troy rushing the QB is not leaving holes in the middle if we have two more safeties out there as well. Not saying the holes aren't there, more that you can't pin all of that on Troy.

I'm also not so sure that Troy as a true safety is the best way to play him at all. I can't think of a time he's every played like that, and his coverage skills aren't necessarily his best attributes at this stage in his career.

Everyone likes to say this and it's simply not true. Flacco threw for 215 yards, how is that picking us apart? He's only one of three QB's to go over 200 yards against us this year and one of those QB's (Castle) only went over 200 yards because of a 70 yard run after the catch. Ravens were 7/14 on 3rd downs, 50% conversion, Steelers were 7/12, 58% conversion.

I think he needs to be up there when there is a mobile QB like next week @ the Raiders.

The problem IMO is Ryan Clark. I know he is gone after this yr but dude needs to earn his check while he is still there. He is useless thus far.

What I see Troy doing more is getting to their running back and slowing him down, I see him getting back there and tripping the RB's up before they can really get going

I've always thought Troy was more productive when playing up on the line. His coverage skills are his weakness. With our hole at ILB, I prefer to have Troy more in the box.

I was so disappointed in him on the play where he lost where he was and dallas clark scored easily. This is not typical ryan clark and have no clue what is going on with him.

I pretty much disagree completely with most of this. Troy is and has been used correctly. When he's not blowing up run plays, or breaking routes, he's creating misdirection and allowing the zone blitz to develop. He's instrumental to the success of this defense. I don't see how Flacco picked the defense apart. There were a couple big yardage pass plays that had less to do with Troy's placement and more to do with excellent coverage reading and execution. The one that springs to mind is that pass to Doss in the 1st quarter.

It was odd. I mean, he's protecting the zone, and basically one guy runs into that zone, who Clark promptly stops looking at and instead watches Flacco - even though he's not in a position to stop Flacco if he tries to run it in either.

    Just bad decision-making?

is he really? this team has 8 team sacks which ranks them 31st out of 32 teams. the zone blitz is not working.

again, im not bashing Troy, but i dont think that he is being used right. sure he gets in there and disrupts the running game, but he still isnt doing anything to slow down the qb. Flacco marched his team down the field at the end. Troy was playing at the line a lot during that drive and Flacco was finding guys wide open over the middle.

granteed Troy has never been known for his coverage skills, but i just dont think they have the guys olong the front 7 that can get pressure that justifies letting Troy freelance at the line anymore. he becomes just one less guy the qb has to worry about in coverage.

yes they are still one of the better pass defense teams per yards allowed, but they arent generating ints or sacks. you can look at that 2 ways.

one is that Troy isnt helping them get sacks by rushing the qb and two by him rushing the qb its one less guy in coverage and hes probably their best ball hawk and its hard to get ints when your in the backfield.

First, I have to say it was just an excellently executed play. Their line sold that bootleg hard, and most of our D bit it. Leach was leading Flacco in space, which caused Clark to take the outside.

How often do you think he's rushing the quarterback?

i completely agree that they are not being picked apart, until the other team needs to make a play. it seems like every time the other team needs to come up big they do against the defense.

unfortunately this looks worse because the offense isnt doing their job at scoring. if the offense doesnt keep settling for field goals and actually puts up 7 instead of 3 these games arent that close and they are probably 4-2 atleast.

im not blaming the defense for this team losing, but im not giving them a free pass either like so many others around here tend to do. if the players are saying their not getting the job done than that tells me something.

Troy is not our problem, but I agree that keeping him back will help sacks develop. But do we sacrifice run defense, by doing so.

The problem is that fans never expect the other team to make any plays. The defense should hold every team to less then 50 yards rushing, 100 yards passing, and less then 10 points.
