That's my point. Asian IS no more derogatory than Irish (Notre Dame), Celtics or Dutchmen (my high schools nickname). I think Indians, Chiefs etc fall in that category. Redskins is a whole other matter.

Actually most of the people living in Asian countries do take offense to the term Asian.

I take offense to the name Steelers! Since most of that industry has been outsourced, I demand the Rooneys change the name! To the Pittsburgh Aluminumers!

Face it. They want to change it because of the word 'skin'. Anything skin related is racially motivated and it offends everyone (except common sense people). Just call the the Washington Losers and be done with it.

The actual name that they've suggested if it changed is the Washington Chaos which is incredibly stupid. I've always thought Redskins was a really cool name actually. It only refers to their war paint anyway but that fact means nothing to people.

Who says? And even if that's true, spinning it doesn't mean anything. If I took the N word and started using it but said, "oh don't worry, I don't mean it that way" do you think that would fly?

And why do you or anyone else that isn't Native American get to speak for them? Like I said, go walk into a Reservation and call them redskins, if you walk out of there at all, you'l be walking funny thats for sure.

History says that. They fought against people settling in a part of Canada and they would put red war paint on their skin in battle and therefore the term Redskin. It originates from a part of Canada that belonged to Great Britain. It has nothing to do with actual skin pigmentation in its original context. The negative connotation came later.

First, I don't think that's a known fact...just a theory I believe. Second, does it matter how a term was used colloquially in the early 1800's? Regardless of how it may have once been used, what it came to commonly mean is what matters.

That said, I don't support changing the name, though I don't really care what that team calls itself either. If we were talking about the Steelers, than dang right I'd care. :-D

That's the earliest the term can be traced back. It started to become negative among people later even to the point that even L. FRANK BAUM used it to support killing ALL the indians! Think about THAT the next time you watch The Wizard of Oz! LOL. Also I'm just trying to point out that it's the context of the original term. The real thing you have to see when determining the motive of those that actually named the team was what were THEY thinking ya know? I've read before also that the reason they are called the redskins is because they were originally in Boston who had the Red Sox and to stick with the theme of the city they picked Redskins. That makes sense. I'm not trying to say the team is named after indians that fought British settlers in Canada. I'm trying to say the actual term stems from that. Have you seen an earlier usage of it or read where someone did just out of curiosity?

TTF's point and mine too is that at some date and time, it started being used as a slur to describe Indians, that's all that matters. I haven't voted in the poll one way or the other because basically we don't have enough information. I tend to think that the majority of Native Americans would find it offensive but I have seen some polls where that isn't reflected, although I call into question the accuracy of those polls. To me it's simple, if redskins is to Native Americans as the N word is to African Americans, lose the name, I think it's totally selfish to put such a value on a sports name if it is indeed insulting to a race of people.

Well that's the point I was trying to make was that the original intent of the word was not to do that but then people started using it later to do that. I would actually guess that after Andrew Jackson got in to it with them is when people really started hating them and using it negatively. The people trying to settle the west I think were really the ones that hated them because I've read things where they were dogging on them pretty hard. But yeah as far as the polls go I've not seen any where indians want it changed. It's mostly just politics and I think if Dan Snyder thought there was money to be made by changing it which would basically just be demand, as in supply and demand, then he would do it for sure.

First, I find it funny to even think the name of a sports team would be a demeaning term. Think about it, it is something that the player, team, fans, etc., all take pride in. Players are proud to be associated with a team and so are fans. To think teams are named otherwise goes against common sense. Would a team name themselves something like the Pittsburgh Jaggoffs?

People are now looking for ways to be offended, and it is ridiculous. I am of polish descent and if someone used the term pollock, I could care less.

Also concerning Asian countries, many of them are extremely rasist, I have spent a ton of time overseas and it exists in Asia big time. The issue with westerners, is most do not differentiate between the various Asian races and that is what offends them more.

I'll flip that on you, do you ever think you will see a team named Washington Pollocks? Of course not, I wonder why.
