In light on recent discussions about their name, what is your opinion?

Keep it civil and politics out of it as per TTF's wishes.

    I know.

I think there should be some discussion with it, but Im afraid it might turn ugly.

My apologies in advance. Just looking for something to discuss.

I really couldn't care less unless our illustrious president gets involved. He needs to focus on the mess the White House is in before worrying about the name of an NFL team.

I feel like this discussion already happened on this board.

My opinion? I can see both sides. But it seems to me that more non-natives find offense than natives (I could be wrong). Let them come forward with one voice, then listen to them. If the majority of native Americans would like it to change, I'd lean that way. Keep the theme and colors. Just name the team after a tribe or nation, or give them one of the warrior names. But if they have no issue with the name (big if, but I really don't know), then listen there too and stop fussing about it.

Nobody seems to find offense with the Chiefs.

Well given the fact that the name refers to the color of their war paint and not their actual skin I think it's perfectly fine.

It was discussed before on here. The latest poll I heard about today stated that 90% of Indians weren't offended by the name. Neither am I.

I think that hiring Shanahan was actually a really savvy PR move by Snyder.

Word is that after he gets fired by the Giants this season, the Redskins are going to hire Coughlin as an Assistant Coach.

Curious - Why should the voice of a group of people dictate what the name of a private company is? Next thing you know someone will want Fat Guys Burgers, Dick's Sporting Goods or Dirty Dick's Crab House to change their names.

Those comparisons don't work. Come on.

And as I've said, if the name is a racial slur in the eyes of the natives, then yes, it has to go. If not, then I have no issue with it. It doesn't affect me either way.

Now, if Green Bay added "Fudge" to their name, we might have a comparison. ;)

Its not the word itself....its an applied meaning that only some are applying. Why are they not picketing the piggly wiggly and demanding the it be called a Native American Potato?

Just change the logo...and everyone is happy.

Just more over the top Polical Correctness. It just runs amok anymore.

What about all of the Animal Names out there?

Just go to the Zoo and start asking all the Lions, Tigers and Bears out there how they feel about their names being represented in sports.

Maybe they should be called the Washington NO NAMES because we can't offend anyone out there.

I'm guessing if it was the Washington N------ it would be a problem but you know, those Native Americans are less then human so screw them!

It's pretty simple, if it's a slur, it should be gone. Native Americans probably suffered just about as much as any race and probably more then most.

I think it's a slur too. Redskins is a much different word than Indians, Chiefs, Braves or Seminoles etc. and much harder to defend.
Like the grinning Cle Indians mascot and Chief Nok-a-homa, I can easily see how it can be offensive.

A little history as to how the Redskins got their name. The were originally in Boston (moved to DC in the late '30s). NFL teams at the time often tried to take names similar to MLB teams, I guess so as to look 'big league'. That's why you had Bears/Cubs in Chi, Lions/Tigers in Detroit, Giants/Giants in NY, and even the Steelers were known as the Pirates intheir first yr.
There were two baseball teams inBoston at the time, the Red Sox and the Braves, The owner of the Redskins gave them that name to associate it with both baseball teams.

UMMMM how about do a lil research before you tell everybody the history of how they got there name!

My answer is a simple NO!
The name had nothing to do with offending anyone and if you look up how they got there name you will see it was actually more giving praise and homage than being offensive.

Curious, that those calling for the name change didn't call out the Chicago Blackhawks.

Either we change them all or none - Cheifs, Braves, Indians, Blackhawks, Redskins.
Plus as to not offend PETA we should change the Ravens, Eagles, Bears, Tigers, Lions, Orioles, Jaguars, Dolphins, Devil Rays, Cardinals, Cubs, and etcetera.
Let us also stop with the violence, with the precedent of the Bullets to Wizards (offensive as well) and change the Raiders, Buccaneers, Vikings, 49ers, and etcetera.
Let us also not unduly spread patriotism and change the Yankees and Patriots.
Don't think they won't come after the Steelers - no need to give glory to those polluters.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

To me there a huge difference between Redskins vs Indians, Braves, Chiefs, Blackhawks or Seminoles.

it is the difference between having a team named the San Francisco Asians vs one called the San Francisco Slant-eyes.

    See the difference??

I agree with there being a difference between those names, but I don't think your comparison is a very good one. I don't believe the term 'asian' is viewed as derogatory by those of asian descent, is it? Maybe Oriental would be a better in place of Asian.

I will tell you something hilarious about that. A few years ago on Desperate Housewives there was a character that was going to the dr and said they wanted to be sure that he wasn't some guy that "got his degree in the philipines" and then this group that represents people from that part of the world came out in an outrage and threatened to sue them if they didn't remove that line! It takes all kinds I suppose. LOL.
