True, missed tackles are a problem. I would add a lack of sacks and no turnovers to the list. If you can't tackle, can't sack the quarterback, can't intercept passes and can't force fumbles you're in a lot of trouble. I hope the defense can get it together because right now, we have a lot of problems.

Yep, it's a huge problem, but so is a lack of turnovers and sacks. QB's used to fear our defence, but the last couple years we've become a joke. We can't get to the QB at all

I agree. Lack of pressure, lack of sacks, and lack of turnovers are the biggest problems, because they are the problem every week. Missed tackles are problematic, but before Sunday's error ridden display overseas, the tackling efficiency wasn't a big problem.

In fact, it's always been a strength. Let's hope it was just an anomaly.

Too much cushion for the receivers. Our line isn't generating any pressure and qb's have tons of time so why can we not AT LEAST play up on the wide outs? I think it is safe to say that we will have zero coverage sacks all year. This d is almost cringe worthy to me. They need to get their crap together.

I think teams have learned to beat us by getting rid of the ball quickly. With our lack of pressure and the cusion we provide it is a pretty easy formula to figure out. I'm sure I know how to fix it better than DL, though! My solution is so great that I can't share it on here though. What I can tell you is if word get out it would probably solve all our worldly problems!

So what you're saying essentially is, I shouldn't have bet my 401k on the Steelers winning the Super Bowl in Vegas at 100 to 1?

It's been said several times before, when you are 7 yards off the receiver the pass rush won't get there in time.

is this a direct effect of age and slowing down? this article says we are on a pace to miss 160 tackles at this rate on the season. our SB season we missed 64. the year before that we missed 67.

the last line in the article says it well. missing tackles is a death sentence for a team that doesn't create turnovers and put pressure on the qb.

is that step slower with age now killing them?

That is part of it. The D does indeed look slow and the missed tackles could partly be attributed to players who just cannot get from point A to point B quick enough.

This is THE number 1 problem. Scheme is tired and old. It simply does not work. It cannot be denied that the scheme is to concede field goals and pray they don't get a TD. That used to work somewhat, but still ALWAYS led to nailbiters. It no longer works at all. And we haven't even played a good QB yet. What the hell is Brady going to do to LeBeau's D??? He will throw for 600 yards with scrub receivers playing off them 10 yards. You said it perfectly when you said it is cringe worthy. There isn't an offense in the enitre league that wouldn't be licking their chops to play this D. So very sad.

I agree with pretty much all that has been said here. I feel like our biggest problem on D is not making the stop when we absolutely need it. Needed a stop at home vs. Tennessee early in the 4th to stay within striking distance... FG. We needed a stop at home vs. the Bears when we pulled it within 7.... Touchdown. Needed a stop to keep it one score vs Bengals midway thru the 4th... chip shot FG. Needed a stop in the 4th quarter of the Vikes game to hang close enough to comeback.... Touchdown. This D for years has made the plays when they needed it. So far this season, the trend is in the opposite direction.

Bottom line. . We need turnovers and not those moist filled morsels you see on TV...

DL knows turnovers and how to teach DBs .. For christ sakes. DL and CL should get together and coach how to exploit

    I am so tired

A huge problem is the defense never gets to play with a lead. Play up 14 and watch the sacks and turnovers start.

You have 5 yards to jam a receiver so why is it we are not doing that?

Been saying it for a while now. The middle linebackers have not done much of anything this year. Many times out of position, get blocked easily, can't shed blocks, pushed back too easily, and take bad angles. No wonder we are getting torched up the middle.

I don't know TTF, i feel like tackling has been an issue the whole season this year.

The corners play off the receivers so the play can stay in front of them. It's the system. What I don't get is that they stand there like statues while the receiver catches the ball, then get juked out of their shoes (Ike).

The D was getting old, and still is. The influx of younger talent (or lack) has not taken hold yet.

The answer as far as I feel that it's time for Coach LeBeau to ride off into the sunset. Need a new approach. Need to upgrade a secondary that has been neglected for some time. Clark although shows up for every game is a hitter. He is not a good cover. Never has been. Troy's best days are behind him, but has a year left in the tank. Ike is a system corner. Need an upgrade. Letting Lewis go was mindless. Two first round selections on the D line have not panned out. The loss of Hampton has hurt the scheme, but he was done. Timmons is hot and cold. Bringing Foote back was a step back. Knows the scheme. As well as Gay.
The scheme needs to change. That starts with the LeBeau.

The D is a shell. It's ugly to watch. Time for a change.

It is time for a change but not because Dick is doing a bad job as DC but to give him a break. He needs to retire so we can usher in the new DC for the future. As much as I love DL it's time.

He should take CL with him as well.. How long as CL been DB coach? Roughly about the same time we have been having issues. Right?

This D is getting beaten like a red haired step child and its getting ugly. Ryan Clark looked like an idiot in the last game. He is so busy working his analysis career he forgot about training to bring back the Steel Curtain.

This is one of those "be careful what you wish for" things, I think. Lebeau' scheme works, and works well, especially when the team can get a lead. The issue is we never get a lead. Defense is extremely difficult in today's NFL, as everything is skewed to favor the offense. What tis team needs to do is embrace this and get an offense that can take advantage of the modern NFL. As much as I love the old school football, Goodell and co. Have forever changed the game we all loved. There may still come a time when hard smash mouth football with hard hitting defense and punch you in the face offense can win again, but right now, that is not the recipe.

Lebeau's scheme worked. OCs have it figured out at this point and it seems that DL is unable or unwilling to add a few new wrinkles to keep the offense off balance. Offenses are picking our blitz packages up way too easily these days.
