Steelers rookie wide receiver Markus Wheaton had his first significant role in the game plan against the Vikings last week, but now might not be available for the Oct. 13 game against the Jets. Wheaton suffered a broken pinkie finger during last week's 34-27 loss to the Vikings that required surgery. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Wednesday that they will not evaluate Wheaton until he has his stitches removed. “It will be a number of days before that's able to transpire,” Tomlin said. Wheaton has three catches for 26 yards in four games even though his snap count has risen every week. Wheaton has played in 56 snaps with 36 coming against the Vikings. He's been targeted only six times.

Wonder how bad it's broke? Seems odd that Ben has a dislocated finger on his throwing hand and touches the ball on every play and has said he will play vs the Jets, yet Wheaton has a broken finger and touches the ball once per game and he can't play? Must be more to the story. I wish him well and hope he makes it back soon, really like his potential.

Well, dislocated is a bit different, but I see what you're getting at. I just chalk it up to where the break is, how severe is it and what kind of grip can he get on the ball.

It must be a pretty good break if they had to go in and do surgery that required opening it up.

Man, I remember Jim Kelly and those guys out there with compound fractures and blood all over the place.

Sicne Wheaton needed stitches, I'm assuming the break was pretty bad.
