Let's see ... Kent Graham and Kordell Stewart were Cowher's QBs in 2000 when the team started 0-3 and finished 9-7. :applaud:

I voted yes, but his play the rest of this season COULD change my mind.
I also agree that it seems wise to wait until the end of the contract, to see what kind of shape he (and the team), are in, then.
I also have a bad feeling that some people might be correct, and we have no choice. Ben may already have decided he wants to re-join Arians.
I REALLLY hope this is not the case, but it wouldn`t shock me if it is.

This is an easy one of course. He can still play he is a little off but he seemed to catch fire passing wise last game. The turnovers are high right now but that can get fixed. Also if we don't extend him please tell me where we're getting this 20 mill he is due next year.

Do the people voting 'yes' realize that they are voting to extend the contract of a guy who HAS 3 YRS REMAINING ON HIS CURRENT DEAL?

    I mean where's the fire?

Ben has said since he was drafted that he wants to retire with the Steelers. His two favorite qbs are elway and Marino.

Can you blame him if he did go to AZ to be with BA? This O line is guaranteed to shorten your career. And Steeler management obviously didn't care what Ben wanted when they got rid of BA and brought in Haley. Probably time to blow this team up and rebuild anyway. I say get a 1st and a 3rd round pick for him and send him out west.

I voted no. As Shaner noted, even in our super bowl years our offense wasn't that good. Ben pulled a lot of games out in the fourth quarter because he was below par the first three quarters. He was a great game manager.

Next year he will have two years left and that's normally when the Steelers do their extensions. Also we may not have a choice cap wise.

Just my personal opinion, but given he still has 3 years left, I would not extend. 3 years is a long time in QB years in this league. A lot can happen and I'd hate to see the Steelers throw good money after bad, meaning he could be broken down in another 3 years. Note, I said could be.

At his current rate, no way to extend. They know they have 3 years to make a move in the draft to get a QB. Given Ben's poor performances even going into last year, I don't see the need to extend. At the rate he is going, he will barely be able to move around in 3 years. Then what?

Hopefully, they will take a wait and see attitude. If he plays really well over the next two years then they could extend, but no way should they extend at this point unless they use him as a teaching tool for the new guy.

Clearly, Ben is NOT the future. At most he has 5 years left of decency. 5 years is not that long. They need to be thinking NOW on who his successor is going to be.

They can't really afford NOT to extend his contract. I'm just speaking from a cap standpoint. Unless something catastrophic happens, he'll be extended, and the guaranteed money will be relatively small. Bank on it.

Based on the O-Line so far this season, maybe they are trying to go the "injury settlement" route?

I actually think he will go the way of Brady and take less but most of it will be guaranteed. Ben has made more off a contract then any other qb ever has.

What do you mean by this? Are you saying since he came into the league he's the highest paid QB ever?

He is the first player to make over 70 million in one contract. Others have signed for more but none have made more.

That's what I'm thinking. As with every other free agent or potential free agent there are two sides. The team has to want him and the player has to want to play for said team. It isn't as simple as player x is a free agent sign him. If the Steelers FO decides to continue running an offense he doesn't like or feel suits him then there's no reason for him to stay. There are several teams out there that would take a 32 year old 2x SB winning qb over what they have now. Jacksonville and Arizona come to mind.

It's true that they can't afford not to extend him, but he has to want to be here. He can always say no and then the Steelers are forced to either trade him or release other high priced players and let any of their own free agents walk.

True but I really don't think Haley will be around past 2015, not if things continue down this road.

*edit* oops, that was in response to your other post above.
