How is this an optimism thread. Instead of complaining about the players, it just complains about the fans.

This is how I feel. I can deal with losing. I dont expect them to be undefeated every season. Its the fact that for the past three seasons, the issues have been the same but Im not really seeing anything change. The game vs the Titans looked like a continuation of last season to me. Its just frustrating.

We lost to the Titans, let it go. This lies as a major contest. All the media hype about the Bungles. Good for them. Not sold.
Bring an @ss kickin tonite and and all will be right in the universe. Please win Steelers so we don't have to hear all the whining tomorrow...

    Go Steelers!

Wow, really? This IS a message board you know? You post your opinions and everyone else can post theirs. Thats great that you are willing to accept a subpar performance game in and game out. Im not and, apparently, alot of other people on here arent either. If you call it whining, so be it. We ALL want the Steelers to win.

I am not about doom and gloom but this team has serious issues that need to be fixed. My issue as a previous poster said is that it seems to be the same issues over and over. Dumb penalties, bad OL play, bad RB play, bad special teams and our defense is gassed by the 4th quarter due to the offenses ineptitude.

My hope is that game 1 will just be a really bad game and not a trend. Tonight we find out. 0-2 really will back us into a corner in my opinion. I don't think I the Steelers will go 16-0 every year but it would be nice to show some consistency and look like some of the weak spots are getting fixed.

I also agree with a previous poster that stated if we can't stay healthy we won't be competitive. We not only could use a win but not suffer anymore injuries tonight. Go Steelers and hopefully they come out of Cincy with a W tonight!

its not just 1 game. its goes back to last season and this preseason. they finished last season with a 2-5 record. they went 0-4 in the preseason and they are 0-1 so far this season.

im not ready to right this team off, but their record is very telling over that span. my question is, where are the weapons at and whos going to step up as a major threat?

right now AB and Sanders are not scaring any secondary. they have no running game and the oline is terrible. Ben has been great, but behind this line hes doesnt have a chance. they just signed some guy off the street and now hes the starting center.

tonights game is a must win. if they go out and lay another egg and the offense cant score i see no reason to think this team can turn it around. they have to put up points tonight and the offense has to find some weapons.

Wheaton and Moye need to play. if the coaches dont feel comfortable putting them in than they shouldnt be on the team. without Miller Ben has no receiver he can just throw the ball to and know hes going to catch it. Ab and Sanders dont have the ability to go up and make a play. the ball has to be an almost perfect pass for them to get it.

so to me this is not panic over 1 game. this is becoming a trend over a 12 game span.

Steelers fans are passionate fans, and I know I can only speak for myself: but I invest a lot emotionally in this team, so much so that watching the games is unbearable. In fact, and I hate to admit this, there are some games that I can't bear to watch. You hear this a lot about parents who can't watch their kids because they get too nervous. That's me.

The 2008 season really took its toll on me. We can look back on it, now, and rejoice: a sixth Super Bowl title. But there were games that season that were 60-minute nail-biters. All three Baltimore games. The Dallas game. The San Diego game regular season game. And then that Super Bowl. I lost fifteen pounds watching that game.

My wife kicks me out of the house when the Steelers are playing. I'm in such a state. So my point is this...

The "doom and gloom" is merely a defense mechanism. It really is much easier on the nerves to think, "It's done, it's over, no point getting emotionally-invested" in this team. I think in some ways it is easier to root for a perennial loser because of this. No expectations. For some of us, the great fear is to invest a lot emotionally, only to be heartbroken in the end.

I'm a better fan in the offseason. In fact, I'd say my most enjoyable football experience is attending training camp: I get see the players on the field, for free, and not worry about winning and losing. It's pure football for the sake of football. It's relaxing.

    Games are not relaxing.

Sorry for the rant...but there is a psychological explanation for the "doom and gloom." Let's maybe take it easy with some of them, talk them down off the ledge, and try to remind them (and ourselves) in the wake of the shooting tragedy today, that is, after all, "just a game."

Yeah I think of it as a coping mechanism because you're trying to lessen the blow. It doesn't mean you're less of a fan for pessimism as it doesn't mean you're more of a fan for optimism. The reality is this. The ONLY possible way that a fan can have ANY bearing on a game is to actually physically be there and make a lot of noise with the other fans and cause a team to have a costly false start or burn an important timeout. If fans optimism made a difference we would literally never lose a game and neither would any other team for that matter. I do think that MAYBE we can demoralize the players if they see our tweets or read internet pages and articles but for the most part in reality it makes absolutely no difference whether we are hoping for 19-0 or 0-16. All we can really do is hope for the best.

The point spread on tonights game has been floatihg between 6.5 and 7 points with the Steelers as the dogs. I got in this morning with the Steelers and 7 points. From a wagering point that is too good of a line for me to pass on. I will usually bet the Steelers and give the points. Very seldom do I get a chance to take my Steelers and get 7 points.
To me, as a Steelers fan, it is an insult that the people that make the book and set the spreads would make the Steelers a 7 point dog to some one like the Bengals after one bad game.
Sometimes it takes very little to help a team turn the corner and come out with a strong game. I'm getting a feeling this is the game the Steelers start looking and playing like the PITTSBURGH STEELERS. Hope so because after all these years of pulling for them, I still pretty much live and die with each game. I've been dying for enough games recently, it's time for the real Steelers to show up and kick some tail.

I once asked that question, if it was somehow a way to try and cushion the blow of losing. I don't buy that it works, I think fans would still be just as crushed after losing, maybe it works for you but I think most would still be just as disappointed and heartbroken.

As an older fan, I grew up watching the 70's Steelers and I remember they weren't much until Bradshaw and company got together to produce that magical team that won 4 SBs and I also remember what the team looked liked after they were gone. Us older fans watched this wonderful team with a killer oline and power backs run a power run game to perfection but it meant nothing as we didn't have a QB capable of consistent play making ability for that run game to work. When I listened to all the crying about BAs offense it made me shake my head, yes, his play calling bothered me too but I remember games were 21 points was lighting up the score board in those years without a QB, I recall a lot of 12-10, and 17-14 games but the defense was impossible to run on and the QB seldom had more than 3 seconds before he was being hit. The defense we have had the last few years would not have been any good in those days, those teams scored very little but the defense always held when it counted unlike what we have now, it seems if there is a lead now they quit playing. When I watched the Titans game I didn't think of gloom and doom, I was thinking about what the team needed to do to pull out a win and like everyone else here, we hoped with every possession that it would be the one were a spark finally caught fire and they would start playing in top form but it never happened. I'm sorry if I seem gloom and doom but the power run game won't work with this oline and BA's offense would have been just as bad as the oline seems to actually gotten worse, hard to believe but it has. I keep hope that something will change this week and it very well could change but being truthful, there were so many bad things that I believe this team lacks sufficient talent to compete for a playoff spot, the last few drafts have been bad for this team, the defensive picks with the exception of this year, have not performed well, I would say typical 4th round pick performance, the late rounds we got some great weapons on offense but the oline picks have been horrid making running and throwing impoosible unless it is a hot read but that only works a few times per game, rely on it and there will be lots of turnovers. I truly hope that our current crop of players are actually good but were cocky and hopefully the performance of the last game slaps them all back into reality that they have to work at it and work hard to get better, that is my glass half full moment, other than that all I see is gloom and doom and it is hard to think of anything else when all I hear for the entire week after the game is how bad the Steelers look on every single sports channel, that doesn't help.

Most fans think the Titans was an inferior team when we played them including the steelers, but it was the Titans that exposed the steelers weaknesses that won that game for them: The titans gave the Texans all they wanted yesterday, and it was the Texans that had to score a TD in the final two minutes to tie the game at 24 to go into OT where the titans held them scoreless for 10 minutes before schaub finally scored a TD to win it 30-24: So it was a good thing that we got exposed and had this week to correct our weakness, namely the Oline and the lack of a running game: if we correct those two major problems, and eliminate the sacks, then we can win tonight, if not, we will lose, and it's that simple.....

I'm totally with you on this. I can't bear to watch games they lose over again. I still haven't watch the Super bowl against Dallas in 95. I have an office of nothing but steelers memoribila. I haven enough steelers gear that I can wear something different everyday for a month. I know the feeling.

So what if he posts "negative" stuff. If you only want to read fluff and nice glowing pieces may I suggest the Post Gazette? Hey, he wants the Steelers to win just as I do, but I don't bet with my heart either. If I did, I would be a very poor man.

Heart says Steelers, but head says this team sucks major wind.

When a guy who always posts really negative stuff, starts a thread saying he's tired of people saying negative stuff...it makes you scratch your head. It'd be like if you were to start a thread saying you were sick of all the Ben hate.

Profit from the insult! Get rich, bet the house, take the 7 pts! Get the last laugh on those disrespectful morons in Vegas! But tell us how you made out, obviously you not one of the guys who would sneer at the favorable line and yet not had the guts to play it.
