Why did we give up on Mendenhall?

We could at least run it with him, and he was clearly our best back last season when he was healthy. I understand the health concern, but we keep other injury prone guys all over the roster.

I greatly dislike the run-first offenses, but even I want to see production from the running game, and we have had no production the past season and to start this season. It just seems so odd to me that we vanquish our best back and put all of our stock in a rookie. They could have clipped both Redman and Dwyer and kept Mendenhall still drafted Bell to groom.

They gave up quickly on Willie Parker too...seems to be a Tomlin trend. Revolving door at the position.

I agree that Mendy was by far our best back and would have preferred him over Dwyer or Redman. I'm sure the running back by committee played a large part in Mendy's attitude last year. He was a legit back playing behind a crap line getting pulled every other play for scrubs. Heck Redman even complained about it this year.

I disagree about Parker. He was a shell of his former self after the broken leg and it showed once again once he wnet to the Redskins.

I agree Mendenhall was the better back among the ones we have but he just wore out his welcome with his antics. Tweets, and not coming to the game was more than Tomlin can stand.

As far as Parker goes, after he broke his leg (I think) he lost his speed and he was done.

5859, I agree that his antics probably made him expendable. I sure would've rather kept Mendy for 2.5 mil/yr than have both Redman and Dwyer for 1.3mil/yr each tho. Mendy has more talent than the two of them put together by a mile...

I think both sides were unhappy and needed a change. Medenhall and the steelers both threw in the towel on each other last season.

I was a huge FWP fan but he was done after the broken leg

Parker was for sure not what he was after the leg breaking, but he was still more productive than what we have to experience today (not that he would be better today than our current backs, but was better at the time they got rid of him).

Man, people here crack me up. Mendenhall's been one of the most hated people on this board for several years... Now we want him back?

He was a head case and one of the locker room cancers last year. Bye bye.

I'd take having a better offense and winning games over a "let's hold hands as a family and sing songs" locker-room anyway.

Depends on the level of discord, don't under estimate what a divided locker room can do to a club.

He fumbled in the SB and he said this

“We’ll never know what really happened,” “I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style.”
“What kind of person celebrates death?”. “It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side.”

Wallace had 9 catches for 115 yards and a TD in a win for Miami today. Should we have kept him too?

In spite of all the stupid stuff Mendy did and said while he was a Steeler, I would have been okay had Pittsburgh signed him to a 1 year deal and allowed him to try to make amends. I just thought he was clearly our best RB and thought he may have been worth a shot at redemption.

    NO!

We could have re-signed Mendy for practically nothing. We would have had to break the bank for Wallace.

    So true.
I was going to post that, he's gone because of the message board.
Now they want him back, how nice.

I agree. I would rather have Mendy over Redman and Dwyer.

I've always been one of the biggest Mendy supporters on this board. He's a far more talented RB than most ever gave him credit for. He ran in a system that was anything but RB friendly. We didn't use him often on 3rd downs and we never threw the ball to him, which made his use predictable. Add that to our terrible Oline and it's amazing he got any yards at all. So what, he wrote stupid twitter messages, look around the league at the terrible things other players do and you'll quickly realize writing stupid twitter messages isn't the end of the world.

On the other hand, I can't help but wonder what would have been the point of keeping him. We haven't fixed our Oline and we still don't throw the ball much to our RB's (although to be fair we don't have a very good pass catching RB). Mendy is a very good pass catcher, so what's the point of having a guy like that if we won't throw him the ball. Then there's the issue of Tomlin apparently hating him for various reasons.

So even though he would easily be our best RB on the roster (yeah, probably even better than Bell, at least for this year), I just don't see how it would have done anyone any good by resigning him.

Willie couldn't pass protect and I think that's why Tomlin didn't really want him. I think Mendy and Tomlin just couldn't get along and never were gonna be able to. Mendy was a bad teammate too. I never was a Mendy fan personally even from the time we drafted him BUT he was better than Dwyer, Redman, and LSH BUT he didn't want to be here so I'm sure we made the right decision in not keeping him.

He was a good back for us. He was not the best back last year on the roster... In name yes, but on the stat sheet NO! And we all know why. He was never utilized to his max potential, but then again he never put out max potential when asked to do it.

mendy was a head case so good riddance, but thanks for the effort and a lot of lack thereof while he was here. The line wasn't the best for sure, but neither was his effort so I'm okay with moving on.

    Next topic?

I remember one play where Mendy got to the line of scrimmage and did a spin move.
