Gruden sat down and asked him questions about playing against us and then showed him pics of his former coaches and asked what he learned and thought of them.

    Cowher: taught me work ethic
Tomlin: paused the just said he was one of us because of how young he is
Lebeau: long pause looked emotional and then just said I miss him.

That tell me a lot especially how these players feel about Tomlin or at least how he felt about him.

    Interesting.

He learned from the chin and emotional about DL but coach T, a pause and he's one of us?

    Not too good really.

I would agree if he actually said something about DL, like he taught me everything I know about playing defense, made me the player I am, something like that you know. But he didn't say anything about either. JH isn't a real big wordsmith, I can't take too much away from this.

Sounds to me as if the players don't see Tomlin as their leader...(or maybe it was just the vets that were there when Tomlin inherited this team)... If the vets don't buy into you, then the young guys are sure to follow.. The love that all those defensive players have for DL is amazing, Idk if there is a coach in the league that has his players respect as much as DL. Makes me wish I could see what they see behind closed doors. Also I read in another article that JH told the Bengals Offense a few ways to attack our defense. Which is expected, but surprised that JH said that himself to the Pittsburgh media.

To me this is kinda what i figured about Tomlin, the only peaple that i have ever heard give any props to was in the media, Not saying the players dont respect him as a coach but i personally never heard any player saying anything positive about him. PEEZY, WOODSON, and others came out a number of times and said Cowher was there guy.

    Right.

So "he's one of us" means "he isn't a leader."

Of course. So when old 49ers say of Joe Montana (for example), "he was just one of the guys, no big ego" etc., that means that Montana had no leadership whatsoever.

Or when the media play up locker room disputes by saying there's a divide between HC and players, and a player says, "he's definitely one of us", that means the HC has no leadership.

Or an HC walks into a team with a strong sense of identity, and he nails his colours to the wall so the team say, "this is fine, he's one of us." That means they have no leadership.

I'm not saying any of these apply to Harrison's words. It's more that some of you guys seem intent to jump on anything and turn it into a confirmation of what you already knew.

Yeah but hes an f'inbungle now and that is one word.

I did see the piece and it was a nice interview and he said good things about Pittsburgh. I also think he said this is his last year if you pay attention. Wonder if he really doesn't want to be there now?

Interesting. I don't think there's anything earth shattering here, but do you think the players respect Tomlin the way they did Cowher or the way they do DL? I'll guarantee you the players had a reverence and respect for Noll. I just don't like the term "player's coach". To me, that has more of a negative connotation to it than a positive.

My football career ended my senior year of high school, so I cant say anything about the higher levels of the sport. And I also know its not a "regular job" like most of us have now. But in college when I was a waiter at pizza hut, I had a few managers. We had a list of chores to do each night. The one manager was easy going, nice to all of us, joked with us, didnt put his foot down, and honestly I knew I could slack off on my chores and not have to deal with consequences. We had another who rode us all shift long, made sure we did everything right before we could leave, I hated working for her, but I did everything she wanted, and after work and outside of work she was nice as could be. Even at work once you proved yourself, she treated you fair. Not sure if any of this relates, but when I hear "players coach" I think of my first manager I mentioned. Not saying any of the steelers slack off or that Tomlin lets them get away with things, but I think Tomlin should be coach and boss first, friend 2nd. But again, I nor any of us know how Tomlin is with these guys off camera...

So are you saying the Steelers should hire a female coach?

;) Just kidding with you, BB. I know what you're saying and that was my point exactly. Tomlin's a great guy, treats the players well and chest bumps them after they've done something good. Nothing wrong with any of that but if he's not able to get in their faces with some authority if need be, I'm not sure that's a good formula for an NFL HC.

No surprise, is it? Tomlin isn't a HEAD coach, he's a coach who players like to play for! Absolutely has NO idea on how to make adjustments when needed the most! Players DO NOT fear him, period! Wrong hire!

Tomlin's proven that he is a head coach. What's wrong with being a coach who players like to play for? I don't know why people make blanket statements like, "Absolutely has NO idea on how to make adjustments when needed the most" when no fan knows the inner workings of the team. Should grown men fear other grown men? I don't believe working in fear is a good working environment. It's difficult for any coach to have an authoritarian approach with today's multi million dollar athletes. How can anyone suggest that Tomlin was the wrong hire when he helped the team win a lot of games and make it to 2 Superbowls?

It took him almost 10 seconds to say a word when Gruden brought up DL. We as fans complain on Mondays after a loss, or celebrate a win, but DL changes lives of the men he coaches, and he is well respected. When you can bring JH, who says little, to nearly tear up by showing him a pic and asking a question, then I'd say you have your answer.

no fan knows the inner workings of the team? Sounds like Antonio Brown's dad tells a bunch of guys at a sports bar in KC everything.

The Lebeau response was a tearjerker. Players see Lebeau as much more than a coach.

I realize its a job and business but it has to get personal. How could you play against teams 2 times a year for many years and not develop a grudge? And then have to go play for them? Im sure its hard.

Tomlin was the youngest head coach, no experience in the position coming into a team that had recently won a super bowl with a proud and successful tradition and fans interpret he was one of us negatively. He fit in with that team as a negative. He the led them to another super bowl and almost won a second. FMTI.
