Let me just first say that I AM NOT CALLING INTO QUESTION ANYONE'S FANDOM, this is not a "I am a better fan then you are fan" type post, I hate that bull****. And many of the people who predicted a loss for this weeks game are people I like here, so I'm not trying to upset anyone. This is a post to point out that "realism" and "fandom" have no business being in the same conversation.

With that said, this weeks predict the score thread got me thinking about this because quite frankly I find the bulk of those predictions shameful. If Raven or Bengals fans saw that, they'd be laughing their asses off. Since when did "realism" become envouge with sports and how one views their favorite team? It probably gained traction by the same people that like to throw it in your face that they are a realist and don't drink kool aid. Here's a news flash for you, you're supposed to be drinking the kool aid! This is your team, you stand behind them, for good or for worse, even when you know they suck! Fan, short for fanatic, realist has no business here. This is not to say you can't discuss the teams faults or admit the team has faults, but damn it, come game day you better think they are world beaters!

I think Jackattack will understand what I am trying to say here, he's been expressing concerns about this team maybe more then anyone else and guess who he picked Sunday? Yep, Steelers. I know that every Steelers fan who predicted a loss wants them to win more then anything else, and will be angry, upset and wrathful if they lose, but wear your fandom on your sleeve, and get behind them on your predictions, who cares if you are wrong, theres no money invoved here. Being a realist is a good trait to have in most areas of life, engraining it with your sports team and your fandom isn't one of them, it's not something to wear like a badge of honor, IMO.

I know there is a chance, probably a good chance that the Bengals will crush them on Sunday but I also know there is a chance the Steelers could win that game and guess which one I am going to stand behind??? STEELERS :steelflag:

I agree completly. that's why I posted that food for thought thread. Monday night football is a night when the Steelers come to play. I don't care how good the other team looks and how favored they are, the Steelers will show up and make it a fight. I'm picking them to win and punch the bengals in the mouth while they are at it.

BF, This is spot on. I have questioned some people's level of fandom here and it's probably not the right way to get the point across.
I too don't understand the whole homer, kool Aid, Rose colored glasses labels some throw around? I too am of the belief that you are supposed to support your team win or lose.
I understand that the Steelers are having some issues right now, but after that's all been said then what? That's what my question to some is, what now? quit watching them?, quit supporting them?, throw eggs at them? change teams? We know they have issues, we get it. I don't like Tomlin, never have, but if I see another fire Tomlin thread I think I'm going to puke.
You are right we are supposed to believe in our team even when it seems there is no hope. I think some people are afraid to get emotionally attached to their team when they are struggling for fear of a letdown. And I think unfortunately some people are just want to be the "I told you so type" It's easy to cheer when they are doing good, but it's how you cheer even when they are losing that defines you as a fan.

I don't think anyone wants the steelers to lose even those you predicted that they will.

I will put it this way, If i had to bet 10,000 dollars on who I think would win it would be the Bengals. But regardless of the money I would be rooting for the Steelers.

My family and I do a weekly PICKEM contest...where the losers buy the winner a fancy dinner....and we basically pick Pitt every week no matter what....one time early on I picked against them...and they pulled out the win....and I realized there is really only one choice

I pick them and they win = HAPPY
I pick them and they lose = SAD
I pick against them and they WIN = SAD for me
I pick against them and they lose = still SAD for me

There really is only one outcome that works...and I will stick with that one

To the original topic, of course realism and fandom don't mix, just think of any Pirates fan under the age of 20 until this year

There's a difference picking with your heart and with your head. What have we seen so far that would give even the most die hard fan a reason to be confident? Why can't you root for your team but be realistic of their chances? Some people like to analyze and dissect their team each week. I don't see anything wrong with it. I for one expect more from them ,what I've seen so far doesn't leave me feeling rosy. Why bother with a predict the score thread if you can't be realistic with your picks? No one will be cursing and rooting harder than me EVERY week but for me the jury is still out.

Well, that's just it. The people he's referencing don't "root" for the Steelers.

This is why I don't pick a winner. I will always pick the Steelers no matter how much of an upset.

Oh man I could make a HILARIOUS joke right now BF but since I'm such a nice guy I'm not gonna do it! LOL!!! I will say that no matter what I will always pull for the Steelers and probably with our injury situation and seemingly a lack of playmakers it's not looking good but I'm still gonna be there Monday night waving my towel and screaming for my team and making fun of the Bungles for what they've always been and not what they think they might be this year.

I said as much in my post, that's not what this is about. Put it this way, instead of betting 10,000 that you think the Bengals will win, how about give me 10,000 if the Steelers win? If you have no doubt, then you shouldn't have any problem agreeing to that. But I'm willing to guess you won't, why? Because you can't say for a certainty that the Steelers wont win, and if so, why not get behind them? They're your team, support them in all ways.

See my point above, you can't tell me you don't think there is any scenario where the Steelers don't win, one side of the ball is playing pretty good after all, why not predict best case scenario? When did Cincy become world beaters? Bears beat them just last week, the Bears aren't SF. Usually there are one or two people who pick against, ok, that happens but this week it's the total opposite, I really think that sucks. And part of me thinks it's people doing it out of anger, just weird to me so many picking against their favorite team.

    :applaud:
(notice the quotations people before getting upset).

We were afforded a divisional favor last week. Unless they do their job this week, no such favor will be awarded... Down in their division regardless of Cleveland or b'more.

here is to a hopeful fresh start!

I had this discussion at work yesterday when a few coworkers said to me, "you cannot seriously think that the Steelers will win Monday night".

My response to them was, "I seriously believe they will win every game they play because if I don't then there is no point in being a fan". The silence was deafening after that.

The title of realist is just an excuse. If you are a fan you stand behind your team no matter what.

BTW piss on the Bungles! :herewego!:

If you question fandom verses realism then why do you even view the Predict the Score thread. As mentioned we will all be cheering for a Steeler win on Monday night but the thread is a contest for points thought out the year and maybe some bragging rights so realism is in play. In the bigger picture if I selected a Steeler loss for the Predict the Score thread and they win, I wake up Tuesday morning in a good mood and don't even think about being wrong in the prediction.

We are all Steeler fans on this board and discussing realism is a part of the reason it exists. If we all drank the Kool-Aid then each reply would be, Your right.

So, are we saying for the predict the score thread, we could only predict a Steelers win, otherwise it doesn't count? I'm confused. I know you we're trying to be politically correct here, but it bugs me when opinion threads are put out there, and then someone tries to question ones opinion.

I believe I picked the Steelers and said if they lose I'm done with the poll, as I don't want to pick against them each week. However, I have no issue with anyone who does. From what I recall, we've never gone undefeated for a whole season.

if da bears can beat 'em , then by God we can beat 'em.

i'm lookin for 15-1 now and if by some fluke they win, then we will shoot for 14-2 and so on.

i'm still excited for this O-Line and what they can be eventually. i'm also pretty excited to see our new center and what he brings. same as every player we have to fill in for a starter. they are more then capable of playing at this level and the bengirls have proven nothing to me as of yet.

it ain't over til we say it's over and as long as one steeler is still standing , it ain't over.

toga, Toga, TOga, TOGa, TOGA........Let's do this!!!!!!!!!!!:herewego::cool:

Did you watch the Steeler game last Sunday? All 9 points we got was a gift. We have no running backs, we lost our center, Haley's game planned sucked. The team had no fire for a home opener and now everyone thinks playing on Monday night football will have fire.

At this point there is no realistic reason to think they will end 14-2, it is wishful thinking and making a prediction as it is a possibility but won't happen.

Incorrect our division would have one team at 0-16 and the other 3 teams with a guaranteed 2 wins cause we blew A** in week one and wouldn't beat anyone on our schedule. A safety that was a gift, and scoring a TD late in the 4th taking more time than it should have. I can't share in your optimism for our team to go 14-2

Keep drinking the Kool-Aid it is going to be a long year.

Goes on to question people's fandom...

As has been said already, it's a contest. The point being to get it right. Not to cheer on your team against all Odds.

Expecting a loss based on current trends =/= HOPING they'll lose or not rooting for your team.

Put another way, we expect them to win every game. which is why so many get angry at a bad game.

I believe they can win on Monday. I hope they win. I even believe they have a chance at the Super Bowl. But ask for a prediction at this immediate moment for the next game, I'm going with my head. Not my heart.

Of course, as a matter of policy, I never bet against them. That's bad mojo. ;)

So, all the teams lost, but only one of them stunk? I don't think I've ever seen kool-aid so overused as it has been this past month or so.
