i'm not sure why all the hating on the defense? they gave up 16 points and were on the field all day. we lost our starting CB and well first ILB to injury.

Wilson played, golden played, JJ played, woods played, heyward played, gay played, it was the opening game so there is time for the young guys to get on the field and i'm sure they will. actually quite a few new guys played sunday. Wilson played quite well in preseason. i'm looking forward to seeing a difference with him in there over foote.

Ya if you can't handle the typo, Steelers dot com has the changes to the depth chart clarified here:

    http://www.steelers.com/news/articl...-changes/a3f09e86-5330-4d83-8f60-189a14c1639c

What's interesting is that it says Velasco is behind Beachum and Redman is still a co-starter followed by Jones and then Dwyer. A lot of time for this to change but I will vomit if Redman starts again.

I don't get it either. DL says their goal is to never allow more then 17 points, they met that, when you hold teams to that little in the NFL, you're doing a good job.

The only issue I have with that statement is that we played against a very average Titans offense. Now, if we hold the Bengals to under 17, then I will feel better. I still would like to see more of pass rush to help out the secondary. I thought Troy played well on Sunday as well as Jarvis.

BTW, I also thought that Timmons would be the D caller.

I read the same thing in a different article. But I also heard that Wilson was calling the D after Foote got hurt so i'm not 100%. My guess is Timmons will be the defensive QB and Wilson and Williams will "co-start" in place of Foote. They really like that co-starter title this season don't they?

They did hold Johnson to 70 yards and no TD's though and only gave up 125 yards passing, actually typing that i'm amazed they put up 16 points, our offense was atrocious but theirs wasn't much better.

I expect the D to perform against the Bengals, offense is what concerns me.

As for Timmons, depending on what article you read, he will be calling the defense, I tell you, reporting sucks in this day and age.

Foote was injured mid drive and there wasn't a stoppage... Maybe Wilson called the plays for the rest of that drive and Timmons took over after? Just a guess.

I feel like our D always does well with CJ for whatever reason. Im not saying our D is bad- I am just cautiously optimistic at this point I think. I hope you are right about the game vs. Cincy.

While I too want to see some of the young guys, I am not sure it is all DL and not Tomlin to some extent who does not want rookies out there. That said, the defense played well enough to win this game for sure. Especially since they were on the field so often due to a propensity of the O to go 3 and out.

I don't wish injuries ( but I'm smiling for this one ;)).. in order to get our young blood in there ,,this seems to be the only way our blind coaches can see what they really have, instead of playing it safe by keep putting in the same old, over the hill, are done, get lost,, veterans.

While they played OK and I firmly pin this loss on the offense, the defense was average at best when you take into consideration situational football. A lot of missed tackles, very little pressure on the QB and an inability to stop the run in crucial situations. The Tennessee offense had drives of 11, 12, 11 and 8 plays against us which shortened the game quite a bit. When's the last time we saw a 12 play drive with 11 runs that led to a TD against our defense at home? A lot of crucial 3rd downs plus a 4th down in the 2nd half was converted against our defense. That same type of performance against the Bengals monday night will yield 28+ pts IMO. The question that should be asked regarding the defense is how can we improve? With all of that being said let me reiterate... This loss was NOT on the defense in my view.

This is one area that I definitely wonder about our coaches, it does seem that they don't put the best talent out there but that is of course entirely speculation, we as fans just do not have nearly as much information as they do on this topic. I say throw Williams out there this week, get Weahton involved, Moye, have no idea why those last 2 guys especially weren't out there Sunday. And please please get Jarvis on the field more, holy smokes, that guy can clearly ball.

I agree and I'm also looking forward to the youth movement and WHO from the new group develops and EARNS the title of LEADER on the defense. I don't mind our bend but don't break mentality but what's missing for me is our ability to get off the field when we have to. I don't want to hear how we limited the QB in the Titan game because that's what we SHOULD DO, IT WAS JAKE LOCKER PEOPLE! But with the score being 10 - 2 and the Steelers pinning the Titans deep on their side of the field our Defense could not get a 3 and out, AND THATS WHAT HAS TO CHANGE!

Agree 100% with this. Let me add that I think our could be "leader" down the road (Williams) is sitting on the bench in favor of a ST's player. Hopefully Wilson proves me wrong, there's nothing I'd like more than him to play lights out. I doubt that will happen however.

DL trust him so lets see what he can do. I think the defense would have kept them to fewer points than 16 if the offense didn't stink up the other side of the ball. Kinda hard to throw a shut out when the offense isnt giving you any support.

no it wasn't perfect but it was a good showing for week one. they had a lot of snaps played because of all the 3 and outs by the offense.

our D usually gets stronger as we go, and the league going a lot more to the pass will change some of the things we are trying to do on defense. creating more pressure from the DE's and such is going to cause a weakness somewhere else, it's just part of it.

I just read JJ is starting this week and I sure hope that's true because I zoned in on worilds a lot and he's not playing very well. he's taken a step backwards if you ask me. maybe he see's the writing on the wall, but it looks like he's playing very uninspired football and we don't need that on the field.

I believe Williams, Wilson and even garvin are going to become very good with increased reps every week. they have all done some good things. I don't agree that Wilson is just a ST's player. when they get more comfortable with these guys playing Timmons can then do his thing.

I watched Worilds too and he got de-cleated by the TE on one run and run over by Battle on another, not to mention some other less than stellar snaps. Agreed, he looked awful sunday. Thankfully JJ starts Monday night.
As for Wilson, I know you like him more than me and I think he might be effective in some subpackages but as a Buck LB in our system I think he's a little light in the pants at 6' 230.. I know Foote weighed around that the last couple of season's but he wasn't exactly stout at the point of attack either. I think Williams at 245 is the run-stuffer we need at the Buck position. Just my opinion..

Wilson is built if you look at him. the kid will get his time and I believe they will use both of them. Wilson just has a little more experience in the NFL. maybe not in game snaps but in camps and knowledge. I think that's what they are looking at, at this point of the season. I don't dislike Williams at all. I think with JJ starting, they want as much experience as they can get on the field. one rookie instead of two may be a little easier to not have someone out of position. that's my take on it.

I hope you're right about the coaching staff using both of them because I think between the two we could have a formidable tandem. If they do that I think it's an immediate upgrade over Foote. I just hope they aren't afraid to use Williams on 1st down and short-yardage situations.

I think Wilson is small as well but I think farrior played around 230. I remember going into the super bowl against green bay he sated at that time he was under 220.
